One of my friends had a Subaru like that when I was in High School. Same Color and it sounded like yours. He was always fixing it. That was about 1974. He had a ball driving it.
Re the speedbumps, brake before the speedbump then just before accelerate. This removes the braking compression from the front springs and makes the ride much softer. Very few seem to do this but it is a known technique.
Ahhh…the smell of 2 stroke exhaust! I bought a Saab 93 2 stroke from junkyard in San Francisco back in 69. I loved it! Forget the electrics…..2 stroke cars rule!
I haven’t seen one of these “Fuji” Subaru cars in many decades . There used to be one at a Service Station I used to pass by all the time. Stopped in and looked it over a few times. When you said it “started it all”, it did. This is how Subaru entered the US market . Malcolm Bricklin. Great video. 🚗🙂
I had a 1965 Saab Model 96 2-stroke Monte Carlo Rallye Edition for many years. Still by far the most fun & favorite car I ever owned. I had 2 more 4-stroke 96's over the years but like with my motorcycles, the Buzzers have always had the highest Fun Factor & a special place in my heart. Wish I still had Olga, the Queen Of The Snows, bless her smokey little heart. 💜
I remember seeing those 360's when I was a kid in the 60's, never releaized how small they were till I seen it in ur garage. I'm 65 now, my long term memory is better than my short term, I'm about 10 miles east of Salem Oregon.
That car is brilliant! I remember that the Ulster Grand Prix two stroke motor cycles, used to use a vegetable based oil for the mix. The smell as they flew past was exquisite.
Mmmm. Castor. I *love* the smell of two-strokes in the morning. At Oliver's Mount morning practice, we'd be lined up along the hill after the first hairpin. Two-strokes with pinned throttles screaming past us, the music they made made all the better with the beautiful perfume trail they laid. Imagine a line of use all doing the 'Ahh, Bisto' sniff'n'smile as they rocket past. Sheene's Rise on a cold, misty morning as practice was run was always popular.
Wow! You have lots of treasures! My father used to own this Subaru 360. And he took our family (mom and three kids) to his parents place. The trip was about 300km. My brother often puked because the heat exchanger was leaking gas. Your vid brings me back to the old memory!
Great two stroke sound! I wanted to go get a haircut today but only got about 100 yards. Flat tire! Well, my Daihatsu Mira with 12" wheels was a piece of cake to change tires. I went to the store where I bought the set of four tires two years ago. The store was closed on a Wednesday, although there were some employees working on their own cars in the garage. They pumped up my space saver spare tire a little and told me to come back tomorrow.
Two-stroke engines were used a lot in economical microcars sold in the UK in the 1950s, though the advent of affordable and economic small four-stroke engined cars like the 1959 Austin Mini put an end to them decades before clean air acts banned 2-strokers. The rather oddball 1 litre, three cylinder 2 stroke medium-sized Wartburg 353 Knights made between 1966 and 1988 in East Germany sold a bit in the UK were a tad more sophisticated, I recall 2-stroke oil mixing was achieved with a pint of cheap oil being added manually to the petrol in the tank.
Those subarus are so cool. They sound awesome. I own 3 trabants and the engines seem quite similar. The trabant has a 2 cylinder 600cc air cooled 2 stroke. The difference is that you have to premix the fuel manually. The sound is almost the same. Keep up the good work!
@@gfargonetoo1 I'm sure they are , to be honest I would find one where the body and everything is complete then swap in a snow mobile engine as it's pretty much what was used in those trabants. I fitted a DKW 800S engine to a three wheel microcar, I gave me 100hp (tuned) and over 120mph, any faster and the front lifted up. the two stroke sound is unique, We use a similar non smoking oil in France.
Also, a tuned expansion chamber exhaust system adds a huge amount of power if the sound is something that you can tolerate, I was taught in high school how to calculate the specifics of how to make these tuned exhaust for any two stroke engine
