  • A spring break tragedy in Mexico has taken the life of a woman from the St. Louis area. It happened Wednesday at the Now Jade Riviera, located about 25 miles south of Cancun.
Three seniors from Lafayette High School and their mothers spoke to FOX 2 after they had just returned from the resort where their vacation took a sudden, terrifying turn.
As one of the students put it, it had been the trip of a lifetime. The students and their mothers said the resort had a large group from at least three St. Louis-area high schools: Lafayette, Eureka, and Kirkwood. fox2now.com/news/investigatio...
The students did not find the body but happened to walk by the scene where it was found.
The victim was apparently the mother of a St. Louis-area student who had fallen from a fourth-floor room. Their mothers later saw a room door covered with crime tape.
This was all in a different part of the resort from where they were staying.
A spokeswoman for the US State Department confirmed the death of a US citizen near Cancun and offered sincerest condolences to the woman’s family.
According to the general manager of Now® Jade Riviera Cancun resort, local authorities have determined the death an “accident.”
The full statement reads, “We have been informed that the authorities have determined that the tragic incident that recently occurred at Now® Jade Riviera Cancun was the result of an accident. We extend our sincere sympathy to family and friends of the deceased.”
The three students and their mothers sent their prayers and condolences, as well.
“You could see the looks on people’s faces. It was truly heartbreaking. Again, you never know what to expect. In the snap of your fingers, something could be gone,” said Lafayette senior Ava Scaglione.
“We all just need to be aware of our surroundings, be very cautious now,” Lexi Basler said.
The state department spokeswoman reminded US residents of the ongoing travel advisory in Mexico, which urges people to exercise increased caution due to crime. It says: “Criminal activity and violence, including homicide, occur throughout the state. Most homicides appear to be targeted; however, criminal organization assassinations and turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by US citizens. Bystanders have been injured or killed in shooting incidents.”
The spokeswoman would provide no further details on whether this was an accidental death or something else but said the state department was are closely monitoring the investigation of local authorities in Mexico into the cause of death.

My group left the day before this happened..... parents AND spring breaker kids were super drunk..... just check trip advisor reviews, majority of the occupants were complaining about both parents and kids. Horrible tragedy my condolences but sounds like she accidentally fell. Second year at this resort never felt unsafe

Maybe you shouldn't make assumptions about the case until more info comes out. But usually its the most simple answer. Rape and murder is a big reach without any evidence.

@@chillbruh8870 You need to google how often college girls seem to do drugs that they normally dont do then dron in a swimming pool or jump off a balcony after they have sex with several guys. The staff will say they were fighting with somebody or they were distraught. Im serious. Google it. Its way more common than you think. Even men are raped.

And what does that have to do with this case? Because something has happened before doesn't mean that is the case every time. I wonder how many times people get to drunk and hurt themselves. Last time I was in Cancun a lady was standing on the banister off her tits and the staff were trying to help her down. It was the middle of the day. I'm just saying jumping to conclusions is never the best idea until more evidence comes out.

Correct I lived in Mexico it's as dangerous as any place in America, always be aware of your surroundings, don't travel alone, get drunk to the point of losing your ability to function. So sad . Poor lady . Just this spring break two men drugged raped and killed a woman in Florida. Not to mention all the other crimes occuring in the U.S.

It's as dangerous as any other place, be aware of your surroundings, never travel alone, I don't recommend getting drunk tto the point that you lose your ability to be aware of what's happening. My condolences to the family.

read on trip advisor , it pure drunkenness , if it murder as some claim , it not going to be the employee , cause there is camera everywhere at the resort, and if you want to say it was murder , then they need to question every single guest staying at the hotel that is looking, this is just out of pure drunkenness

Why are they even bringing up the cartel stuff in this story? Dumb. Just like anywhere else.. don't buy drugs, don't sell drugs, don't play stupid games. My condolences to that woman's family, but this has nothing to do with cartels. Stop sensationalism and just stick to facts.

A message to the self absorbed teenagers and parents who thought it was necessary to take a trip to one of the most dangerous and corrupt countries in the world in the middle of a pandemic. Grow up and get your priorities straight! Read and believe travel warnings issued by YOUR country!

This has NOTHING to do with covid. Some people just sit around pointing fingers. Just because you are not traveling, doesnt mean nobody can. The report said she may have fallen. What does that have to do with covid? It is totally within guidelines to travel now. Someone died and you call them selfish!!! you are a self-righteous jealous, poor poor person, I feel sorry for you.
