I’m not Vietnamese, I’m an American and have traveled around SE Asia over the last 4 years and have chosen Vietnam my home for over a year. I am in Vietnam now my wife is a English teacher working in VINH YEN.I’m from the UK.and my wife is from the Philippines I’ve been coming to Vietnam since 2018 I just love coming here I love the people and the culture of the country. I met my wife in Hanoi last year when I was here again on Hoilday visiting PHU QUOC island.. I went back to the Philippines with her and I asked her to marry me…we come back to Vietnam so my wife could continue working. Has yet I haven’t decided to drive here. I do have a international driving license. I have been a professional driver most of my life. Driving Bus’s and Heavy goods vehicles in London and all over the country and Europe.. I look at all the people on their motorcycles and scooters and the people in their cars. I don’t see any or if anyone knows the laws of the road…I just want to know is insurance required to ride or drive in Vietnam..we always take a taxi or have a car and driver and I must say I haven’t seen many accidents.. I was in a taxi a couple of years ago that was involved in a accident with a scooter rider.. I would definitely drive outside of Hanoi the roads are much safer and less crowded.. I can’t imagine myself driving into Hanoi at any time in the future..

My wife was born in the US but she felt more connected with Vietnam than with the US. I wonder if Vietnam will face the same birthrate issue that South Korea and Japan are currently facing. Also, I was so proud of myself when I drove from HCMC all the way to Da Lat. For some reason it felt like a huge accomplishment lol (b.c. I didn't hit anyone). I got pulled over for speeding, and unlike the US they expect you to get out of the car. I didn't know and I just sat there inside the car for a good 30 minutes. I finally got out of the car and gave the police my "Uncle Ho license".

A Renaissance man making an impact in Vietnam for Vietnam. I have been to Vietnam three times in the last seven years. My other planned trips were hindered by covid. I was last there 13 months ago and plan to go again coming November. I am from Hawaii and have fallen in love with Vietnam and always look forward to returning. Thank you for shedding light on Vietnam. Although I am already 75 years old I would like to spend much more time there. We will see how that pans out.
Very nice quiet area at the beginning of video. Congrats on being multi-lingual, I have trouble with Vietnamese due to the tones but if I focussed I think I should be fine. But I will say, and this has not been mentioned, that in Spain it is 8 euros an hour. 221,823.66 Vietnamese Dong So labor is cheap for a reason, right? Inflation may have peaked. Many people donate money to Vietnam to live comfortably because Vietnam does not pay a living wage to Vietnamese citizens. Like I said, a lot of places in Latin America are doing the same thing. Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Ecuador, they all don't pay an adequate standard of living. Please advocate for a better standard of living for many of the citizens in Vietnam. The government never paid adequately it never did in Vietnam
If you have USD then you can live in Vietnam comfortably and culturally but you have to worry about the polluted environment and food safety. The funny thing I heard from locals about saving money for the future is to take care of medical expenses because VN does not have a medical system like the US, Canada, the Europe Union (EU) or Australia. Some families in VN went bankrupted due to medical expenses w/o and/or insufficient government help. So do enjoy VN but don’t get sick or involved in a car accident (I don’t want to be mean) because you have to go back to the US in order to receive all the benefits and care you deserve.
Living under the demonic Commie Vietnam makes people lose their humanity, as doctors don't treat patients unless money is paid first, regardless of how severe the sickness or injury might be, unfortunately. In many cases, patients already on operating beds in operating rooms were pressured to pay extra before surgeons even proceeded with the surgeries.
Yeh In vietnam you better have alot of money if u want to live healthy,safe and happy.coz alot of vietnamese went back there and bankcrupt i know a few.
If VN can benefit from the exported products it made then you can talk about GDP. Unfortunately the foreign companies just use the cheap labor force of VN to sell their products and Vietnamese workers depend greatly on those companies to survive. If there are enough local companies that can pay the Vietnamese workers properly they would not go abroad to find better pay jobs. We can say that the Vietnamese are now exploited inside and out because they don’t receive decent compensation for their work now and/or when they retire.
I'm an American business man and I first traveled to Vietnam in 1997. I found the people friendly and very eager to learn about the USA. Planning on retiring as well as doing business in Vietnam and I'll reach out to you when the time comes. For those that don't know, it's incredibly difficult to move money out of Vietnam. If you were to invest in a business in Vietnam and it's doing well and you want to transfer money out, the bank will not simply let you wire the money out or convert to USD without a bunch of legal papers work and restriction.
Because if VN does not control the outflow of forex, there would be a massive capital flight and its USD reserve would be depleted in day - unquestionably, wealthy people in VN have already moved some of their money abroad. In fact, a number of Vietnamese entities appeared on the Panama Papers in the 2016 leak. There is no real exit for investments in VN, unless it is a barehanded exit.
It's nice to see you all drive on the right side of the road and the cars are left-hand steering. That makes it so much easier for North American expats!

Employing a PA who can drive is an excellent investment. For business or as a retiree it is an investment in your health and insulates you from administrative predation. Is good.
Those hidden costs of operating a business are not at all hidden. They are openly documented requirements. Finding a good broker (like you for example) is a good idea. Too many people offer too many short cuts. Having a local partner is prudent. So long as they're not a partner that takes administrative and compliance short cuts. Your spouse and children are your best local partners. Beware of in-laws.
Did you actually get the traffic tickets and history of recording those tickets in the government system? For example in Laos, there's no official central record system for all the traffic officers to see how many tickets you had. My little experience in Laos is you pay the fine at the check point spot and you go, no official ticket unless you challenge it and then the police send you to the office, which can delay your trip and may cause more problems for you.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. But you must agree that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and I find that it's counter-intuitive and perhaps illogical for one to migrate FROM, while literally the rest of the world wants to immigrate TO, the US. Countless Vietnamese students and professionals came to the US to study and have decided to stay simply because in the US there are more opportunities, better quality employment, higher salary, superior quality of life. Absent striking gold, generally, you cannot build as much wealth for yourself in Vietnam as you can in the US. At the end of the day, when you have grown tired with all the red tape, corruptions, and nonsense, you will want to return to the US, and, at that point, you will realize that the grass in Vietnam wasn't all that green to begin with ... maybe because all your savings from the years in Vietnam will not be enough in the US. While I acknowledge that the Vietnamese government has changed and opened up a lot since 1989 when it began it Đổi Mới policy and the Vietnamese economy has grown remarkably since 1995 when US and Vietnam normalized relations and the US-led economic embargo was lifted, it is still a totalitarian state. A quick survey around the world will inform you what you can expect living under such as system. I wish you the very best.

Do not involve nhậu or beer ôm if you want to keep a happy family,VN got so many pretty girls ,women etc….u know what i meant. 2.Stay away from politics. 3.Do not trust your relatives in VN. 4.briberies you need to becareful
I will never drive in VN. Very high risk and super low reward 😂. Traffic is too crazy. I came back 3 times but never drove a car just biked around towns/villages on a scooter.

You said Vietnamese rich people are Very Rich. Have you found out how they could become that Rich? Are they a good example for people to learn how to get rich like Elon Musk, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates (What Bill wants, Bill gets, right?) or else because they live in VN? Majority rich peoples are getting their richness from real estate investment or I must say real estate betting. The 2nd group of rich peoples are government officials and they built their fortunes thru bribery or insider knowledges. Vietnamese are very entrepreneurial but typically in small or street businesses. Remember VN like China controlled by a single party government system, they won’t let any single individual that is too powerful or too smart be successful.

Due to the law regarding the land in VN stating that people can only Use the land but Can’t Own it because the land belongs to “all the Vietnamese people” and managed by the government. In other words the Communist Party owns all the land in the country and will lease it to the highest bidder after giving a small compensation to the previous owner or I should say “lessee”who hold a lease of the property. These “lessees” still think that they Own the land unfortunately. Beside robbing the land of poor people to build resorts and/or apartment complexes, those rich entrepreneurs don’t know a thing about other businesses. One typical example is VinFast a part of Vingroup trying to sell their EVs so called Made in Vietnam to the US but failed miserably or Vinhomes that cheated the buyers by taking their money before delivering the promised houses or apartments.
Rich people in Commie Vietnam almost always have connection with the regime. For example, Pham Nhat Vuong the richest man in Commie Vietnam got parents as Communist Party members, and the bulk of his wealth was from developing and selling real estate properties built on robbed lands that the utterly corrupt and brutal Commie Vietnamese government officials robbed from Vietnamese citizens. Zero risk, 100% profit. It's essentially a zero-sum game in Commie Vietnam where personal gains of a selected, parasitic, privileged few 5% invariably come from personal losses of 95% of the population. That's why they don't need to "work" like in the West and have plenty of free time even mentioned in the video. It's not due to difference in culture and lifestyle, but the origin of the wealth and the nature of the looting.

08:50 Driving in Vietnam requires a Westerner to Zen ability to let go of all fear. Once there is less fear you can go with the flow. You'll notice the lack of traffic lights, just remember always wear your helmet, yield things work out.
I would say 90% of people don't know how to drive. Its the worst unimaginable way of driving mindset in the whole world. The way they ride there motorbike they drive their cars, trucks, buses 16 wheelers the same way. You miss your turn, no problem just drive back wrong way. They dont even know how to make a proper safe turn. I bet this will go on till 50plus years. Students ride their bike out of school like rats on fire, they dont look left or right. I have been driving here for 14yrs I have been hit 3 times, my brand new bike was hit inside my own home parking space, im not talking about an apartment shared parking. Same as you the first thing to do is to learn to drive slow forget how you used to drive where you came from. You need to re-program your driving habits all over. I would say if the traffic police where to start fining strictly for traffic violations they would run out of paper in one day. Vietnamese may create a cure to disease, build the tallest building in the world, build rockets, do other incredible things BUT DRIVING IS JUST NOT THEIR THING!
There is a very large population in the US speaking spanish and the whole of south American countries speaking Spanish. I dont know why young American Vietnamese dont learn Spanish . Later on in life, they might open a business dealing with them, travel to south America or even have a wife speaking Spanish . In Asia, Australia, Canada, Vietnamese should learn speaking Mandarine. In Europe, they should learn speaking French .The British and American not going to fools with Vietnam , we speaking english with you anytime, anywhere, anyday. VN drivers dont stop for people crossing street, foreigners beware, I was walking across Green Light , within Xing in q5, i swear 90% of drivers they just dont care, i was so annoy i literally put out my fist letting them know if they run into me, they will eat my fist.
I grew up in Boston, which is widely regarded as having the worst drivers in the country. Now I live in Hanoi, which makes driving in Boston liik like a walk in the park.

As a lawyer in United States should be successful if you’re 100% American but Asian lawyer is always consider you’re an outsider you will never be successful in American , I remember I have an Asian lawyer when to courthouse he have to wait until the judge call his name or case number,but an American lawyer all he have to do is walk to the judge and have a little small chat then they done, but my Asian lawyer have to wait and wait!!!! American lawyer and the judge they hang out every day go drink specials place they hang out Asian lawyer don’t do that, that’s why no connection between them ,Just like Asian singer in American they have no business making money they have to go back to vn to make money and have connections ,plus Vietnamese peoples are easy to trust in peoples ,plus licenses from USA go school here and there easy to believe,there is no honest lawyer in this world that’s the fact

I have been to Vietnam three times in the last seven years. My other planned trips were hindered by covid. I was last there 13 months ago and plan to go again coming November. I am from Hawaii and have fallen in love with Vietnam and always look forward to returning.

So labor is cheap for a reason, right? Inflation may have peaked. Many people donate money to Vietnam to live comfortably because Vietnam does not pay a living wage to Vietnamese citizens. Like I said, a lot of places in Latin America are doing the same thing. Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Ecuador, they all don't pay an adequate standard of living. Please advocate for a better standard of living for many of the citizens in Vietnam. The government never paid adequately it never did in Vietnam
If you have USD then you can live in Vietnam comfortably and culturally but you have to worry about the polluted environment and food safety. The funny thing I heard from locals about saving money for the future is to take care of medical expenses because VN does not have a medical system like the US, Canada, the Europe Union (EU) or Australia.
Some families in VN went bankrupted due to medical expenses w/o and/or insufficient government help.
So do enjoy VN but don’t get sick or involved in a car accident (I don’t want to be mean) because you have to go back to the US in order to receive all the benefits and care you deserve.
Living under the demonic Commie Vietnam makes people lose their humanity, as doctors don't treat patients unless money is paid first, regardless of how severe the sickness or injury might be, unfortunately. In many cases, patients already on operating beds in operating rooms were pressured to pay extra before surgeons even proceeded with the surgeries.

If VN can benefit from the exported products it made then you can talk about GDP. Unfortunately the foreign companies just use the cheap labor force of VN to sell their products and Vietnamese workers depend greatly on those companies to survive. If there are enough local companies that can pay the Vietnamese workers properly they would not go abroad to find better pay jobs. We can say that the Vietnamese are now exploited inside and out because they don’t receive decent compensation for their work now and/or when they retire.
I'm an American business man and I first traveled to Vietnam in 1997. I found the people friendly and very eager to learn about the USA. Planning on retiring as well as doing business in Vietnam and I'll reach out to you when the time comes. For those that don't know, it's incredibly difficult to move money out of Vietnam. If you were to invest in a business in Vietnam and it's doing well and you want to transfer money out, the bank will not simply let you wire the money out or convert to USD without a bunch of legal papers work and restriction.
Because if VN does not control the outflow of forex, there would be a massive capital flight and its USD reserve would be depleted in day - unquestionably, wealthy people in VN have already moved some of their money abroad. In fact, a number of Vietnamese entities appeared on the Panama Papers in the 2016 leak. There is no real exit for investments in VN, unless it is a barehanded exit.
It's nice to see you all drive on the right side of the road and the cars are left-hand steering. That makes it so much easier for North American expats!

Those hidden costs of operating a business are not at all hidden. They are openly documented requirements. Finding a good broker (like you for example) is a good idea. Too many people offer too many short cuts.
Having a local partner is prudent. So long as they're not a partner that takes administrative and compliance short cuts. Your spouse and children are your best local partners. Beware of in-laws.

Did you actually get the traffic tickets and history of recording those tickets in the government system? For example in Laos, there's no official central record system for all the traffic officers to see how many tickets you had. My little experience in Laos is you pay the fine at the check point spot and you go, no official ticket unless you challenge it and then the police send you to the office, which can delay your trip and may cause more problems for you.

But you must agree that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and I find that it's counter-intuitive and perhaps illogical for one to migrate FROM, while literally the rest of the world wants to immigrate TO, the US. Countless Vietnamese students and professionals came to the US to study and have decided to stay simply because in the US there are more opportunities, better quality employment, higher salary, superior quality of life. Absent striking gold, generally, you cannot build as much wealth for yourself in Vietnam as you can in the US. At the end of the day, when you have grown tired with all the red tape, corruptions, and nonsense, you will want to return to the US, and, at that point, you will realize that the grass in Vietnam wasn't all that green to begin with ... maybe because all your savings from the years in Vietnam will not be enough in the US.
While I acknowledge that the Vietnamese government has changed and opened up a lot since 1989 when it began it Đổi Mới policy and the Vietnamese economy has grown remarkably since 1995 when US and Vietnam normalized relations and the US-led economic embargo was lifted, it is still a totalitarian state. A quick survey around the world will inform you what you can expect living under such as system.

I will never drive in VN. Very high risk and super low reward 😂. Traffic is too crazy. I came back 3 times but never drove a car just biked around towns/villages on a scooter.
The main thing is to be proud of your job and the money you earn. Don’t let your kids admire you like Don Vito Corleone in the Godfather movie starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino.
You said Vietnamese rich people are Very Rich. Have you found out how they could become that Rich? Are they a good example for people to learn how to get rich like Elon Musk, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates (What Bill wants, Bill gets, right?) or else because they live in VN? Good for you if you can extract something from them. Good luck!
Majority rich peoples are getting their richness from real estate investment or I must say real estate betting. The 2nd group of rich peoples are government officials and they built their fortunes thru bribery or insider knowledges. Vietnamese are very entrepreneurial but typically in small or street businesses. Remember VN like China controlled by a single party government system, they won’t let any single individual that is too powerful or too smart be successful.

Due to the law regarding the land in VN stating that people can only Use the land but Can’t Own it because the land belongs to “all the Vietnamese people” and managed by the government. In other words the Communist Party owns all the land in the country and will lease it to the highest bidder after giving a small compensation to the previous
owner or I should say “lessee”who hold a lease of the property. These “lessees” still think that they Own the land unfortunately. Beside robbing the land of poor people to build resorts and/or apartment complexes, those rich entrepreneurs don’t know a thing about other businesses. One typical example is VinFast a part of Vingroup trying to sell their EVs so called Made in Vietnam to the US but failed miserably or Vinhomes that cheated the buyers by taking their money before delivering the promised houses or apartments.
Rich people in Commie Vietnam almost always have connection with the regime. For example, Pham Nhat Vuong the richest man in Commie Vietnam got parents as Communist Party members, and the bulk of his wealth was from developing and selling real estate properties built on robbed lands that the utterly corrupt and brutal Commie Vietnamese government officials robbed from Vietnamese citizens. Zero risk, 100% profit. It's essentially a zero-sum game in Commie Vietnam where personal gains of a selected, parasitic, privileged few 5% invariably come from personal losses of 95% of the population. That's why they don't need to "work" like in the West and have plenty of free time even mentioned in the video. It's not due to difference in culture and lifestyle, but the origin of the wealth and the nature of the looting.

08:50 Driving in Vietnam requires a Westerner to Zen ability to let go of all fear. Once there is less fear you can go with the flow. You'll notice the lack of traffic lights, just remember always wear your helmet, yield things work out.

As you get older, you learn to drive more proactively! Some not!
I would say 90% of people don't know how to drive. Its the worst unimaginable way of driving mindset in the whole world. The way they ride there motorbike they drive their cars, trucks, buses 16 wheelers the same way. You miss your turn, no problem just drive back wrong way. They dont even know how to make a proper safe turn. I bet this will go on till 50plus years. Students ride their bike out of school like rats on fire, they dont look left or right. I have been driving here for 14yrs I have been hit 3 times, my brand new bike was hit inside my own home parking space, im not talking about an apartment shared parking. Same as you the first thing to do is to learn to drive slow forget how you used to drive where you came from. You need to re-program your driving habits all over. I would say if the traffic police where to start fining strictly for traffic violations they would run out of paper in one day. Vietnamese may create a cure to disease, build the tallest building in the world, build rockets, do other incredible things BUT DRIVING IS JUST NOT THEIR THING!
There is a very large population in the US speaking spanish and the whole of south American countries speaking Spanish. I dont know why young American Vietnamese dont learn Spanish . Later on in life, they might open a business dealing with them, travel to south America or even have a wife speaking Spanish . In Asia, Australia, Canada, Vietnamese should learn speaking Mandarine. In Europe, they should learn speaking French .The British and American not going to fools with Vietnam , we speaking english with you anytime, anywhere, anyday. As a lawyer in United States should be successful if you’re 100% American but Asian lawyer is always consider you’re an outsider you will never be successful in American , I remember I have an Asian lawyer when to courthouse he have to wait until the judge call his name or case number,but an American lawyer all he have to do is walk to the judge and have a little small chat then they done, but my Asian lawyer have to wait and wait!!!! American lawyer and the judge they hang out every day go drink specials place they hang out Asian lawyer don’t do that, that’s why no connection between them ,Just like Asian singer in American they have no business making money they have to go back to vn to make money and have connections ,plus Vietnamese peoples are easy to trust in peoples ,plus licenses from USA go school here and there easy to believe,there is no honest lawyer in this world that’s the fact

Vietnam’s economic growth excludes their youth and low wage workers outside of the tech and manufacturing sectors. These sectors often only employ their government family members and friends. Poverty still ravage Vietnam due to nepotism. To succeed there you must have money already, bribe and be at the mercy of the communist party. I have no problem driving in Saigon.... matter of fact.... I drove a lot better than my cousin's private driver.... I rode a motorcycle all over the country.... my relatives told me not to as it is very dangerous.... I told them not to worry as I drive a lot crazier than the Vietnamese.... I LOVE driving in Vietnam.... it's the best ever.... hehehe
