    I wish I had watched this video prior to calling a tree trimming service come in and trim ours. I don't think they knew what they were doing and more used to bigger trees (non flowering etc.) I trusted them and went in the house. I came back and they cut it back like 50% - Again, I figured they knew what they were doing. The tree struggled in the spring and we have had a hot summer - now almost half the tree is dead.

    Introduction of a pest during growth season is usually do to stressing the tree limbs fron cuts when they are more focused on feeding flowers and leaf. Dormancy is best for these as well as vines like wisteria for example.

    You just answered an important question. I need to take about three to four feet off the tops of my two dogwoods. They’ve grown too high in front of my house.
    If you think I’m going too far let me know. I’m in the northeast and we’re in early April with no buds or leaves.

    Loved the video. I live in Frisco tx north of Dallas my husband and I are building a house an just got clearance to plant a pink dogwood in the front yard in replace of the canopy tree, many people here say the dogwood won't last because the soil is alkaline but I was told to add peat moss to make it more acidic for the tree and it should be fine. Our new home will face the north and I thought putting the dogwood in the front hopefully it will get a little shade during the day. Any thoughts? Thank you.

    I am a subscriber to your channel but I need to correct your statement or deception on the dogwood tree you introduced at the beginning of the video that the dogwood's Petal's ...they are in fact called bracts and the flower is at the center of those bracts,and are actually yellow when the open.

    Tree Buddha, I have a 3 year old 5 foot tall white dogwood that has just started to begin to show signs of major dead branches that started out looking good and healthy and were alive this spring. I'm thinking Anthracnose maybe starting to kill the branches. Is it advisable to prune away all the dead and dying branches intermingled with the good growth and branches this summer? Please let me know. The same thing is happening to my Kousa dogwood tree. I had a red and a pink dogwood do the same thing and it ended up so severe that I had to remove them. Trying desperately not to do that with these 2 remaining trees. Please let me know. I love your videos. Great job.

    I thought trees were best pruned when dormant...not while in full bloom and full of sap?

      Exactly, reduce the chance of infections to the tree.

      I was just looking into pruning time for my kousa dogwood. Resources say after flowering. Late fall to early winter.

    One side of my tree must be dead because nothing has grown on the branches, which are kinda thick. Do I just cut them off? Would new grow and fill that side in?

    We have part of a dogwood growing from our neighbors’ yard. A white one from their yard also hangs into our yard. It seems like maybe it could have been better pruned to bring the blooms into a more spherical pattern with less limb stretch. I may be wrong about that. Trying to get more information.

    Thanks Tree Buddha and Kelly, very informative. My understanding is, that you prune (tidy up) a Dogwood after it finishes blooming. Definitely not in ealy spring fall or winter when the buds have been set.Is that correct? Thanks!💚🇨🇦

      The video didn't show the bleeding caused by cutting a dogwood while flowering .
      A dogwood should NOT be pruned in the spring
      A light clipping after it flowers is fine while pruning should be done while dormant

    Oh one more thing people say the dogwood does not do well in north texas because of the soil but this is zone 8 and dogwoods can survive in zone 8 so I'm confused about that....are they hardy? Are they sensitive or adaptable? I'm thinking to plant in Nay then the TX summer will come how can I keep my pink dogwood going through next summer?

    • @ishikami1
      @ishikami1 9 років тому +1

      dej92 I don't live in Texas but I live in zone 8 area. I have a pink dogwood and it faces North. It gets morning sun till about 12 and it seems happy enough. I do not know how hot or dry it is there but dogwoods love water.I'ts a good idea to put mulch around it to keep the moisture in . After a few hot days in summer my dogwood would look very droopy but after adding water (make sure the water out of the hose isn't hot) it will pick up. But it takes a couple of days of watering. Don't just water once and then forget about it. Give it one good round of water and then the next 3 days or so you can lightly water it. You will notice the branches will pick up when it has had enough. Add some nutrients too. When I first moved here the tree was growing like mad but looked unhealthy with little flowering. I kept watering it during dry times and added a pine tree fertilizing stake to it. Two summer later and it is beautiful. Full and healthy. I pruned the top and the edges and it has a lovely umbrella shape. Before it was growing mostly to one side. The side where the sun would move to. I think by cutting that side down the other side of the tree had better access to sunlight and was able to grow longer branches. Good luck with your tree.

    Hi. Do you or anyone know a ~20 ft tree( if you know it's a good species to absorb Carbon Dioxide even better) that needs
    i) No maintenance, not cactus.
    ii) Can survive ~15 days rain/ yr weather, eg in the Equatorial & Tropical Region, Malaysia
    iii) Has green leaves ?

    I have a pink dogwood that is getting a lot of moss on the bark. Should I be concerned about that? Remedy?

      Moss on the trunks of trees is very healthy. This is how trees naturally grow in a healthy forest.

    How far from the foundatiom can you plant a dogwood? I have one growing about 5 ft away. Can this cause foundation issues ?

    • @Wyndham21044
      @Wyndham21044 4 місяці тому

      A dogwood will not cause foundation problems but if you have foundation problems the tree will likely make it worse

  • @Wyndham21044

    You don't prune a dogwood from a roof
    And you don't do it while it is flowering .
    Doesn't matter what color the flowers are .
    If you meet the tree Buddha on the road, don't listen to him .
