    I’m pruning this dogwood tree in December after the leaves have fallen off the tree. This insures that the tree is dormant and all the energy is in the trees trunk and root system.
    Wearing ansi safety glasses, and using a dewalt 12” chainsaw for the the branch pruning.
    I pruned out crossing branches, V-branches, other low hanging branches that are in the way when I mow the lawn. Pruning these branches will help with air flow.

    Great job. In the summer and fall we have campfires to dispose of the branches. Take care. 😎

      That is a good way to use them up. I built some raised garden beds to bury them, they will breakdown in the soil and release nutrients into the new bed. 😁🌶🥕🫑🪱

    WoW you saved me from pruning our beautiful Dogwood to soon! I didn't realize that it should be pruned in the winter, My Bride was telling me to cut it back NOW! but its June in Pa. Thank You!

      Glad it could help, the reason you are better off waiting is the tree is able to make energy all summer long. Once the leaves start to fall off the tree all energy is stored for the next season. Plus when tree is dormant it will be less stressed than in the heat of the summer. Any questions you can always reach out to your local cooperative extension office for some assistance.

    I have a couple of big, low-hanging branches that I have to lift up and duck under every time I mow. I think I'll have to take them off, but it's good to know to wait until the leaves have fallen first!

      Glad I could help. It’s typically best to wait until the leaves have fallen off so the tree is dormant. Diseased, damaged and broken branches should be dealt with sooner. It cutting yourself just remember you don’t want to do a flush cut to the trunk, cut the branch back just to the collar. And if the branch is large sometimes multiple cut are needed.

      Thank you! If your not quite sure where you need to prune. You can always reach out to your local cooperative extension office. Definitely need to remove any crossing branches.

    Thanks! what about a very young tree. Like a Lowes small version that I planted 2 years ago. ? It’s healthy but a little thin..

      To me as long as you don’t have “v” branches, crossing branches or dead/diseased branches, for a young tree I would let it grow and focus on root development. Leaves are the way the plant makes energy and if you remove them there is less energy being produced for your tree. I have a few more branches that need to be trimmed out. Hope to make another video in the fall/winter. I try to wait until the tree is dormant before making any cuts (unless it’s absolutely necessary).

    Squirrels used to chew the bark off my trees lol

    My 25 year old Dogwood is not doing good. One side is dead and the other side looks great. The center trunk is growing a ton of sprouting large leaves. Do I wait to trim these dead branches till fall or winter?
    I used weed and feed on the lawn in March but I have used it before. We live in Texas and it gets very hot but it’s been fine for 25 plus years. We water it often in summer. We planted some annual flowers at its base but we have before. Help! I don’t want to loose it. It’s beautiful.

      My best suggestion would be to reach out to your local cooperative extension office. I’m in Delaware so not sure about Texas climate. Dogwoods are under story trees so if it’s in the middle of the yard full sun with no shade, this could be the issue. Typically I would what until after the leaves to fall off so all of the energy can be stored in the roots. This could be a special situation, no sure if there is any disease in the wood that could require faster limb removal. I would do a quick search with your city or town and cooperative extension office ( I would assume either university of Texas or Texas A&M would run the extension). They would be much more equipped to help you. Sorry I could be more help and good luck with your dogwood.

    I have so many trees it is hard to get to. My magnolia is my biggest problem child.

      Especially if the trees are tall it’s a pain to get to. This is my only deciduous tree and thankfully it’s not huge. Everything else is evergreen 🌲

    I have some shoots about 3 feet above the ground in a 30 foot kousa dogwood. Should those be snipped off?

    • @GardeningwithBarchuckin
      @GardeningwithBarchuckin  Місяць тому +1

      @@NutmegThumper are they like a water sprouts growing straight up from base of the tree, or new branches growing from the trunk? Typically water sprouts growing straight up is due to stress. I would hold off and remove after the tree goes dormant if you want to prune them. Don’t need to stress the tree out in summer anymore than it could be. Plus it will continue to collect and make energy for the following season. Hope this helps, don’t forget you can reach out to your local cooperative extension office and they should be able to get you on the right track.

    Is that a battery powered trimmer or a mini chainsaw?

    I need to do this in the winter. Very helpful tips, so thank you. Do you use pruning spray afterwards?

    • @GardeningwithBarchuckin
      @GardeningwithBarchuckin  Рік тому

      No pruning spray was used on the cuts. Never used it before, actually just had to google it to see what it was. If you have used it in the past and haven’t had any problems. Keep using, if you never used it before and had to purchase it, I wouldn’t worry about using it.
