A band consisting of fantastic musicians, an unmatched lead singer and a genius composer/songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, on keyboards). Tuomas, the keyboardist/songwriter, said about this song Storytime, that when he came up with the chorus he knew right away, that's it, a moment of gratification!
It takes him about 18 months to write songs for an album. He challenges every part of every song, trying to make them better. He then introduces his demoversions of the new songs for the band, including the vocal lines, and then they start rehearsing to make the songs even better. Conserning the latest Nightwish albjm, Floor asked Tuomas about certain songs: Where do I breath? Tuomas: "You'll figure that out"!
Usually it's recommend not to react to Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum, Wembley Arena 2015, until you know Nightwish better, but I can't wait for you to react to that one. A 14 minute in five parts, a masterpiece - composition, arrangement, vocals. Very personal song for Tuomas. Will propably never be performed again. The usual adviced is to find out about the story bihind the song. It is about the aftermath of firing the original female vocalist of Nightwish.
I recommed you watch Nightwish Making of New Album Episode 8. Nightwish members visiting Angel Studios in London, where the sinfonic backing tracs of Nightwish songs are recorded. The album is Endless Forms Most Beautiful, influenced by science, evolution.

Hey Dr , so glad too see you back , yea this is such an uplifting , fun song , seeing Nightwish perform this and every song for that matter is an experience youll never forget .
Floor is so in the pocket with the band during this song , incredible quick singing and of course the operatic section is just goosebump heaven , then she just brings it home at the end with those soaring slides .

During the wakken concert, many cover ghost love score 1st. It was late in the set, and Floor in an an interview said she was sick before the show. Yet wakken is just amazing. Every song a jem. When she agreed to help the band finish their tour commitment, she only had 48 hrs to learn the entire set. She made those songs her own in many ways, but Thoumas constantly told her , "Sure, try it out, see if it works. ". And it did . They offered her the job full time, while touring. They knew they found the perfect person.

Thank you for the reaction and analysis. I love to see how you singing specialists break down what "in this case" she needed to do to achieve the sound she wanted. I know Marco has left the band and all of us lost an great singer in his own right. I'd like to see you react to "Kiss while your lips are still red" song where Marco has the lead, also it is very soft song. So you will see side of him many reactors miss. Everyone knows his growling or "Metal voice" in his mind but rarely we see softer side of him in these songs or concerts. And Hello from Finland, hope to see more reactions soon.

Maybe you can also check out EPICA, a Dutch symphonic metal band ( combined with other forms of metal) The founder of the band is Mark Jansen ( not a relative of Floor)
He founded the band after he left After Forever ( Floor’s former band)
The lead singer is Simone Simons a good friend of Floor, who had a similar training. Check out any music from their 10th anniversary concert called Retrospect ( about 10 years ago) The have a complete orchestra and a male and female choir. Also during this concert Floor featured in 2 songs. Sancta Terra and Stabat Matar Delarosa, you will like the last one where you can admire the duet in opera style of these two phenomenal ladies.
Hello. It’s the first time checking out your channel. I’ve been a professional symphonic performer for 40+ years but I got my start in rock during my teen years. I love symphonic metal as it combines so many of my favourite musical elements. I enjoyed your vocal analysis and the pop up definitions will help many people I’m sure.

It's always interesting to hear about interpretations of Nightwish songs. None of the songs have official interpretation, but of course, the songs that are based on a given book, such as The Greatest Show on Earth have the book as the major interpretation.
Loved your professional musical vocal commentary Dr. Marisan. Such a fun song and such a powerful and uplifting vocal performance from Floor. Another great one for you to comment on would be "Ever Dream" from this same show. Floor has commented that it is one of the most difficult vocal challenges in the Nightwish catalog. This will introduce you to elements of Nightwish in an orderly manner. You might think you know what Floor is capable of, but you have no idea still. You might think you know what kind of musical genre to expect from the next Nightwish song, but you have no idea. You're in for a treat!

Floor is brilliant, but it is not by accident. Even though she is classically trained, she has spent her whole life getting her instrument to where it is, and she is so good at it. This song was not written for her at all. You can tell she is holding back during the whole thing, then at the end, she can really let loose on that part that is made for having a small choir of backup singers.

You took a little dive into the lyrics, maybe I can offer some food for thought here.
It might help you to know Tuomas uses several pseudonyms to refer to himself in various Nightwish songs which he writes from experiences, observation or imagination, he says he is a man with a boy's heart and you will see that directly in places even with boy narrators sometimes. He often goes back to childhood memories and experiences but seen as an adult.
Digging into his lyrics is almost a second bite of the cherry although invariably metaphoric, sometimes very ambiguous and nearly impenetrable. He likens it to a painting, you decide what it means to you.
He will also use poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul - Tuomas has an affinity for the ocean, he was studying to be a marine biologist.
So here, "A writer by a fire. . . . . ." Tuomas is speaking to you directly, he is the story-teller - "Took a journey into a child-man’s heart" would be Tuomas the boy but he has grown up from being a Peter-Pan, the crib is empty but he's thinking back to those exciting childhood days. Just about everything else in the song now makes sense to the referenced stories and imagination.
Good stuff, you keep at it, Nightwish will not disappoint.

The song is from the second lead singer Anette Olzon era. Anette has more of a pop/rock style, and didn't do the operatic parts. Those were done with a choir then. Floor can do them, so she took over those parts when she joined about 10 months before this show. Every song here at Wacken was written for one of the 1st 2 singers. (GLS was an original lead singer Tarja Turunen era song).
Tuomas (keyboards and Primary songwriter) likes themes of stories and childhood innocence. He's also a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer.
The quickness and breathwork/control that Floor uses in their more recent song, "Pan", is wild. :)
The mention of moonlight and chimney's reminds me of Mary Poppins as well as Peter Pan! Tuomas often calls himself or the implied character a child or boy/dead boy in his lyrics.

Oh boy, ....... I love how much you know and appreciate about this band and of course the wonderful amazing Floor. Tuomas is a true musical genius, writing all of this amazing musical soundscape. This performance at Wacken 2013 must go down as one of if not the greatest performances of all time, .... seriously. Please if you haven't, ( I've lost track of who's reacted to what) but react to at minimum, Everdream, Romanticide, Ghost River, .... Hell, all of it, .... but then do go to Poet and the Pendulum at Wembley, and Greatest Show on Earth at Tampere....... just insane ....... Hi Dr. You are lucky… there is so much more of NW to discover and Floor on her solo endeavors. I think you have just scratched the surface. Of NW, many dozens of great performances to go 2013, 2015 and later. Floor’s Popular solo endeavors can start with her many performances of the Dutch TV show “Beste Zangers” from 2019 (Phantom or the Opera, with Henk Port and her cover or Lada Gaga’s “Shallow”) Solo performances continue thru the Lock down period where Floor produced several You Tube videos from her home studio in Sweden. Frozen, Frozen 2, Euphoria, Heart’s Alone and many others. Post pandemic there is also a lot of content of Floor. At the current time she is receiving radiation treatment to resolve a small breast cancer lesion that was removed the end of last year. It was caught early and all indications are she will be good as new and ready to resume amazing us in a few months.

This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a popish sound (originally sung by Anette,The second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!!
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.

If I remember correctly, Floor did develop neck aches when she started doing the windmill. She contacted a physiotherapist and she learned to train her neck muscles and a way to mill without hurting her neck.
Nightwish is a band. If you want to react to a metal opera, with various vocalists singing a role, try this. The song has 11 singers you can react to. And it is just the first song on the timeline of many operas. if you watch this again watch when she does the hair twirls she places her hand on her hips. i have seen the singer from epica do the same. from what i understand it takes a lot of the strain off of the neck.
