the issues you talked about have been the plague of Porsche from way back. Kinda surprised the engineering geniuses of P haven't ever fixed them. Instead, they came up with new, disastrous problems... Thanks for your frank assessments.

You are an ace at being able to deliver videos without having to edit them! It takes me forever to put together a short video and it doesn't help that I'm deaf, but the more I do it, the faster the process gets. My '86 doesn't have a grille that fills the gap between the windshield and hood and I think all 924/944/968's were like that out of the factory. They do have the cowl cover at the base of the windshield, like yours.
I have an affinity for 80’s cars. And that’s one that I always loved. Great deal too. Looks great.

Proud Porsche 944 1986 owner all original 102,000 miles White with red interior one owner love my car its absolutely perfect, Major things from not being driven enough rack and pinion seals wore out and had to be replaced, the underhood heat fabric has been replaced with thermal heat sound deading, and a cover for the split dash.Keep us posted on your new Porsche
After all this time this car is still one of the best handling cars I have ever driven I have a 93 Mx6 with expensive 36 way adjustable pillow ball mounts and still the Porsche handles better maybe its the German engineering or the rear wheel drive !!!

A poop brown 944 with cream and brown was my first car at 17.
The boot is so usable I spent 3 nights sleeping in it during a music festival and would occasionally sleep in it after a night out partying. It's also big enough for 2 people to have fun if you pop the hatch.
You are making me want to extend my search for an E36 M3 to include a 944 or 928 as well. Love it that you picked these up and looking forward to more content on them!
The first time I started to really see what it had, 135 indicated and I thought I was going to die because the top window trim started beating up and down! Scared the hell out of me! And those button snaps for the trunk liner were so hateful! Good God I miss my car!! Great Video’s my friend!! I’m loving the Porsche content and do it yourself stuff!

You can do brackets for the rallye pod: hooks that go under the panel gaps, top & bottom.
So no drilling ;)
PSA: the nose portion where the crest is mounted is not removable on pre 1985.5 cars. The panel is welded in place as opposed to bolted on in later year models.

Please don't follow Doug, Tavarish, and Hoovie and start doing every other video about Lamborghinis and Ferraris when you get big. We would much rather watch content about a $1,000 93 Taurus SHO over cars we, most likely, will never own.

Tavarish lost me as a viewer early on during his burned twin turbo Lambo. Just winging it and getting so much wrong. I get “learning as you go”, (see that kid restoring the Fiero channel!), but Tavarish was making it up as he went and avoided learning anything. And certainly dished out bad advice. And I feel real bad for anyone who buys one of his cars when they later fail spectacularly.
A lot of their viewers are likely young and don't realize yet that you don't just wake up one day and have an exotic car. Adam LZ is pretty good , he likes relatable imports over exotics. But to be honest it's called projecting when you think that what you want to see is what everyone else wants to see.
One of my favorite UA-cam car stories is the story of Ruby. The C5 auction corvette built by Cleetus McFarland and his crew. Started as an auction corvette with a junkyard truck motor, and they kept building junkyard engines and making the car better and better until now, where they're prepping her to run 7s

Casey I love my '83. It's got its quirks and it's light, revs quickly and handles great. Since picking it up in November I've replaced belts, water pump, plugs and wires, fluids, shocks and struts, tires, fuel filter and new ventilated discs up front. When I first drove it home it darted, weaved, and banged across the highway. Now it's a different car and lives up to its potential. Amazing car for being almost 40 years old.

Hey Casey! Good buy on the '83! Sounds like yours needs a lot less sorting than mine did. I have loads of spare parts, so if you want a wind deflector/vent/whatever else it might need, hit me up. I live in Akron, so we can keep it somewhat local.
You’re right about the water pump. The blocked off spot for the hose started in 86 as the port was used on the Turbo. So your water pump has been replaced at least after 1986.
Its a Turbo waterpump for whatever reason. The normal N/A pump doesnt have that plastic bit at all, even new ones. The Turbo pumps costs twice as much.

There is a easy fix for the lightbox. a couple of rubbercovered hooks grabing into the gap above the bumper, and the bolting it into the screws holding the nosepanel right beneth the hoodgap.

As the owner of a Spirit R/T with the Lotus head, I happened to have the Borroughs tool to do the timing belts on these and was pretty good at them after "helping" the local garages a couple times. Eh, I still get access to tow trucks or first dibs on a lost project here and there. But they are easy to work on. A couple of them had those "weight saving perforated zip-ties" holding the lower valance together. When one of my friends would bust on me for going Zip-Tie McGyver, "Porsche used them on 944's more than I just did and it worked". I think the '86 Turbo was the quickest production car through the 1/4 mile that year, and I only remember that because I am a Turbo Buick guy and collect old magazines. The LC2 was just behind it and a lot cheaper. I might pick one of these up some day as the tables have turned...
I’d be super pumped to see that raptor vs 944 snow rally! That’d definitely get some serious views too! It’s great to see someone restoring cars with the intent of actually driving and having fun with them, for all the car content out there on UA-cam, I think that would be cool and unique.

I've bought a 944 last week, the car has been standing in a garage for almost 3 years, the plan is to restore the complete Car except for the body because there's nothing to do.
Afterwards I'll also try to find a original radio, an convert the music on my pc to casettes
Maybe you could use 3M 5200 adhesive sealant to attach the light pod to the front? The down side is removing it would be a PAIN and may take the paint along with it. That also puts the strain of attachment on the paint instead of the metal panel underneath so don't know if it's a world class idea. Up side is no drill or panel damage!
924/944/968 are very underrated for being too VW. You really can do cool things with it.
And the cars are mostly Porsche anyway, the most vw of all of them was the original 924 (not the 924s), but even that was designed by Porsche, it only used vw parts.

I miss my 944. I also had an '83. I bought it from my friend's boss in January of '94...for $3,000! It was a manual in Copenhagen Blue with tan leather. It was in spectacular condition. I wish I never sold it, but about a year later the steering rack went and I was broke, so I sold it. But in retrospect, that was an INSANE deal for an 11 year old 944! This is making me very nostalgic... And yeah, as a musician, I fit a 4x12 speaker cabinet and amplifier with my guitars in the back no sweat! BUT, I learned a lesson: Take the key out after you open the hatch. I was pulling that speaker cabinet out and sheared the key off in the lock cylinder. Then for $135, my dealer was able to get me another. I had no spare. It sat in my friend's driveway for a couple weeks.

I've had a 924, 944, 944s and 951... Loved every one if them. They are incredible cars that have appreciated incredibly. Sold my pristine low miles 944s in 2001 for $5000. It would be worth over $15k now......

I bought an '85 944 from the original owner. The car is as pristine as it gets for a 35 year old car, will try to get my 944 story soon. Great video and awesome sense of humor, just like mine. Keep it up brother.

I fell in love with these working at an auto glass shop in AZ and a clean example came in that I got to drive and feel in love immediately with after years of believing “snobs” about them sucking...shows how you have to experience a car to form your own opinion🤙
As a teenager in the 80's our town had 1 944 and everytime I saw it, it was a special memory. I love the 944's. I should pick one up.
Here is a tip from my military days... when you buy a used car take it by a police station and ask them to do a drug sweep on the car with a k9. This will protect you from being charged for someone else’s drug issues. Of course in the military we took it to the military police. As the old saying goes “ cover your ass “. Great video Casey and if that was your wife operating the camera she did a great job making you look good.

I love my 86. 28k miles, still drives like a new car. Really fun car compared to all the heavy cars we have today.
You mention the rear stats for the hatch.. It has been my experience, that changing those to newer ones, with more pressure, causes the rear glass to separate that much quicker. Great video
Looked at a 944 just yesterday. It was sitting at a shop / old car salvage / used car sales / drinking out back kind of place. LOL
Thinking this 944 might be a cheap project, I asked to look. Water in the back floor. Wires running everywhere under the hood. Smoked when I cranked it. Continued to smoke the whole time. Needed a clutch. He asked $4500. Said " It's a Pooshaaa. They expensive." When I finally stopped laughing, I was told to leave and never come back. Didn't get to ask about the tool kit. 😂😂

David Browning I have the round one too, it makes the car very jerky in first and second for me. And it's almost impossible for me to heel toe in this car due to gas pedal being floor mounted and the brake pedal being so high up

Eric Cioffi Yeah for sure. And I think the floor mounted gas is a euro car thing. I've heard some people get pedal risers. Its just a problem for me because I autocross mine and need to be able to revmatch

Hi Casey greetings from the UK. Enjoying your channel and your humourous no no nonsense approach to car repair. Love my 944's too, started with an 83 Lux in 2003 and moved on to my West German import 85 Turbo which I've owned since 2006. Done most of the jobs you've covered so far but always happy to see others working, any new knowledge gained is good knowledge. I'm currently rebuilding an engine from an 89 S2 Cabrio which looks to have seized at sometime by looks of the scoring on the exhaust side of the bore. Anyway keep up the good work on the channel. Oh and by the way like you I love the early dash models very classic and my Turbo has original white Fuchs you mentioned 😃😃😃

Im not a car guy however, I was just given an 84 NA auto in guards red. its immaculate inside and out but hasn't been started since 04-05! The Ignition barrel is shot so i have to short the starter to bypass it. Havent started it yet though. I just changed all the fluids so far. It hand cranks and i have lubed the cylinders before hand. Hopefully i can get it going soon coz I just want it gone. Its too good to let it rot away. Cant believe how heavy the doors are on these. Nice solid thump when closed. Beautiful car for its age. Thanks for your video! It inspires me not to give up on it :)

I worked at a Porsche Audi dealer with my dad in the late 80's and getting to drive the cars even in the lot was fun. I liked the appearance of the late 80's 944 Turbo the best :-)
I've owned five 944s and this is a great walk through.
Bought a pristine 1990 S2 in 2010 with 87k. Drove it for two years and ended up selling it. Still kicking myself.

Not sure if you drove your previous 944’s in snow or not but it’s a blast. My ‘83 was my only car when I lived in Crested Butte CO in the mid 90’s and aside from when it got deep in the roads, it did great and was really fun. Also, at least on my ‘83, that nose panel is welded not bolted on do replacing it might be tough in regards to doing the light cluster. My ‘86 is bolted so at some point they changed it. My ‘83 is a super early production (spring of ‘82) so it has some weird differences to other ‘83’s. Stoked to see you doing this car and your whole attitude towards cars, keep in keeping in 👍

I just got one for $4800. I did a ton of research but mine was a re spray that didn't go as well as owner planned. But mine is super clean with absolutely no rust. I'm happy with what I got
Agree on the U.S. bumpers not too bad at all and the shifter rocks...super solid looking. Didn't know about the peaked gauge acrylic...great info and suuuch cool engineering, simple yet effective. Don't know if you guys have dash carpet available ? Very normal in Australia due to big time sunshine but rhd, of course. Usually they come pre-moulded with a stitched edge. Fun fact... Porsche paid royalties/licence fees to Mitsubishi for the engine balance shafts. 3 grand...man what a score.

Griffin Fairchild only if you’re a good mechanic and start with a decent car and or your older family member is cool and can help maintain a car. Just to be on the safe side. An early 924 with the Audi engine is an ok first car, but tough to find a nice one. The 924s is basically just a narrow 944

Some parts are very expensive, and most everyone you see will have a LOT of age related needs, like fuel lines in need of replacement, flaky electronics, torque tube bearings in need of replacement...These things can catch fire or destroy themselves in a host of other ways if you're not fastidious regarding maintenance. They're definitely not ten year old Hondas that you just put gas in them and drive...maybe change the oil every so often...All those boring Asian cars won't commit suicide if you ignore a noise or something.
@@tempest411 Never owned any 944s, eh? Or any other cars? EVERY car has parts that are very expensive if you don't know how to source replacements. At this point 30+ years out, yes the soft pieces of the high pressure line need replacing - just like Hondas. And...? What's flaky about the most simple German Bosch electronics, other than apparently you don't understand them? I'm sure there are odd ducks that need new tt bearings under 200K miles - but they're outliers. Obviously, the 944 isn't for you, but for someone who knows anything about modern cars - it's a simple, reliable car. And can be fast in 951 guise...
Just discovered this channel, liking it so far! I had a 944 for a while, and loved it. It wasn't perfect and it sure as hell wasn't fast, but it felt so good to drive, and made you feel special. Interesting comments about the snobs, it's not just porsche drivers. I often gave a friendly wave or light flash to drivers of interesting and classic cars but they often look the other way because i'm not driving some pretentious jumped up "classic" car.

Magnets for your rally lights? You would want to put a good ceramic coat on the paint first, and attach the magnets to the light pod. The trick would be to make sure you create enough magnetic surface area on the pod so that they can overcome winds. You would want a bond that requires some tool (like a plastic trim remover) to separate the pod from the body when not in use. Strong neodinium ones recovered from hard drives have amazing strength. Thanks for these videos. I love seeing the cool cars for my youth live on.
The one thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned is the seperration of the hatch and glass. From what I can tell it is a bit of a common issue, my 86 has it as well. You definitly got a steal though
Thumb and finger method for the belt? Also suggestions on where to get sunroof seals? Also, no power steering because its an early car? Huge fan of what you are doing adding positivity to the car community.
I'll be looking forward to the timing belt install. I've seen/read plenty on the subject, but am always interested in seeing how others might do it.
My brother in law owned one of these back in the day. It had some electrical issues due to sloppy stereo installation,; which we managed to fix. He finally sold it when he discovered he was beginning to be on a first name basis with the Porsche mechanic. It had serious reliability issues.
3k for a 944? How in the world did you find one? They are all going for like high tens - twenties now. Would love one of these as a first car.
They've gone up the past few years, around me they're not ridiculous though. You can still find a decent high-mileage one a little south of $10k. Might not be the case everywhere though
When it comes to the rally light pod, perhaps you could modify the pod slightly, and the underside of the panel that it attaches to, and have four or six clips of some sort to hold it in place?
I want another 944! Gave me the itch again! Damn it Casey! You got a hell of a deal on the 944 Casey. Can't find anything that nice for that price in my area. Cheapest I found within 100 miles of me was 5000 and it was trash.
I bought a 1983 944 when I was 16 in 1997 paid 1800 bucks it was the biggest pos!! Lol but I love it brought it to college in 1999 temperature gage quit working many of the gauges never works speedometer didn’t work I’m sure it only had 30,000 miles on it but I think it had like 200,000 miles on it replaced pretty much everything in the vehicle and still had overheating issues with it and didn’t know it was overheating when I was taking it out one day because the gauges didn’t work and I’m starting a small fire in the engine and that was the death of my beautiful bright red Porsche😎🏁

My 79 Córdoba has a vinyl cover over the original dash and it works very well to freshen the dash without replacing it.
That was a good idea about getting a replacement front end piece... You might want leave that original sheet metal noise piece alone and find a junkyard noise piece that you would mind sanding down, drilling into, and repainting.... since the current noise piece paints currently matches and in good condition

Old porsche rally cars are the coolest! There's a few guys in the PNW area that bring their Porsche Turbos camping off road. Owning a vintage mock livery rally inspired off-road Porsche of some kind has been a dream. Do it Casey!! I'm already envisioning something epic with this 944.
Casey, buy that front panel from another 944 and mount the light pod to it - KEEP the existing one and store it somewhere, that way paint will match perfectly and it will be "numbers matching" hahaha! Honestly I like the car without the rally light pod, but I know your keen to put it on - just toss it on a used panel from a donor car. Oh and flat black FTW on the pod!

The slot things in the center console are for cards or cassettes and are original I was surprised to find them in one of my 944s. I’ve owned three if these cars and never caught that throttle difference which I think will help my current project. Great work!

Hey Casey I might be wrong but I think the wind deflector is the ONLY thing that keeps the front of the sunroof down. You might want to check on that.
Resting your hand on the shifter primarily puts wear on your shift forks and shift synchro hubs, causing the shifts to not fully push the shift hub/sycros onto your speed gear.
'87 944 S owner. Interior is mint and body is good. She needs a good tune up but nothing too crazy. Such a fun car.

My wife and I are looking into getting an embodiment of the 80's in the form of a sports car and are eyeing the 924S/944. Glad you did an in depth look into the car as we can gauge it better especially the trunk since we love road trips and camping. That little plastic white thing on the water pump is for the 944 turbo, it’s blocked off on NA cars. Since your car is pre 85.5 and has that then yes you are correct. Your water pump has been replaced.

I don't know if you know it or not but you're missing the cover for your battery. I also had a little bit of paint bubbling in the exact same spot as you do.mine has been sitting in the garage for a few years now because the clutch went out of course. Fixing it looks quite labor-intensive compared to most clutches. For right now it's on a back burner. I really enjoyed watching your video.
Excellent car. I had a 944 with the same spec only in white for two years. Bought it on EBay for similar amount of moneys and imported it to Israel. With AC and everything working. Great car for self maintenance. Lot of work was done on the parking lot... Transaxle oil is replaced without lifting the car. I have only good things to say about this car.

I think that's one of the most nicest design Porsche made
