I dont normally comment on you tube videos but I'm currently out on my boat fitting this exact throttle system and you have just saved me so much time, thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos!
Just wanted to say a quick, thanks a lot. I have just completed this fix on a Suzuki controller exactly as you suggested by grinding the pins down and then drilling and tapping the holes and using a screw to hold the parts in place with a washer. Changed a push throttle to a pull. Job done....cheers
So i tried unsuccessfully off and on for a year to do this without success. Until you posted this video that is. I was able to do in 10 minutes what i hadn't been able to do in months, and successfully reverse the gears in my 703 after picking up a spare part from a shade tree mechanic. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great video Stu. Those control boxes always seemed complicated to me. The last one I opened up had a bunch of parts jump out at me leaving me to figure out a puzzle when reassembling it. Took lots of beer and head scratching to get it back together!
Stumbled across your video, just what I needed. My problem was the Warm up throd. Mine was in the wrong position. Turned the round disc 180% and all is good. Thanks
The cable end on that motor is different. It hooks on the side of the threads not at the tip. You'll notice the hole is smaller on the correct end too (that's why it won't idle down all the way)
hello! Following your tutorial I assembled the controller correctly! I changed the microswitch that was bad! When I started the engine the fuse that goes to the rectifier blew! It may be because I tried it without the cables that go to the starter relay being connected.
You need to also reverse the drum that the warm up lever attaches to. If you use an OLD pull throttle box for the part, brass piece where the tension is, and you put it in a new box you also have to transfer the bushings and wave washer from where the pin locates in the box.
Is there a place to order a parts kit in case you loose a bearing. Asking for a friend. Is there a parts breakdown that shows where all the parts go.my friend seems to have a extra plastic bushing can't figure out where it goes.
Thanks for a great video. I would love to know the number of the parts you said you were gonna order in the end of the video? I have the exact same setup. Switched from push to pull. My throttle cable also turns out to be too short. I cant find the right part to order though to be able to fit the throttle cable to the motor Thanks again! Best regards Björn/ all the way from Sweden
My twin 704 has a little slop in shifting into gear ( starboard shifter), are there replacement part you recommend to replace inside controller to get a more positive shift. 2005 controller with new shift cables. Port side controller shifts good.
Hi. Also thank you so much. I had to convert mine the other way to a push. I did not have a spare part so I had to “un peen” the pivot pins. Why they couldn’t have used washers and C clips. One thing you did not mention is that you need to rotate the disk 180 degrees on the cold start lever. If you look at the disk you will notice that there is a second notch on the top of the disk. At least in this case you just have to undo 2 screws instead of punching out peens. I discovered this when the cable went the wrong way when I pulled up the cold start lever. Not sure if I will even need this on a fuel injected anyway.
Once again.. THANK YOU. It appears every weekend as I ecounter problems.. you are my life-saver ! If by any chance you visit Puerto Rico, let me know. Blessings !
dude! the thing about the newer vertion of the cable holder on the engine size being to close to the selector. thats exactly the problem i have! but i went to my local dealership and they gave me that engine mounted cable clamp. could you tell me the part number that i should've been sent? obviously the older one, mine is also an 80's engine. i know its a long shot... but ???
Awesome videos. I have a house in PI where my wife is from and have a small boat with a messed up controller. I think the saltwater has won the battle. Hard to get parts here and improvising is about the only tool you have. Seems an old motor is like an old person. You fix on thing and something else goes wrong
I been trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong trying to install a new controller for the last 3days. Your the only one I have found that even address this problem. Thanks alot
thanks for the video just got a new Vevor side mount controller and ran into the samE PROBLEM JUST AS YOU .GLAD I SAVE MY old PARTS . i have to do same thing to my old 1994 25 hp mariner thank you
Hi, I’ve got a boat that’s using yahama 701 remote control but the throttle handle is damaged. I was wondering if the remote control can be replaced with the 703 model?
Boat ran, had rats eat the wire harnesses. I had the remote apart to replace a wire harness, never messed with the mechanical linkages, put it back together, and now I have lost throttle response using the control arm. Shifts fine, neutral accelerator lever works, and activates throttle linkage, but no positive throttle while shifting past 30 deg. in forward, or reverse! I can't find any missing parts, or anything missing compared to a Seloc manual pic. i just had it open - gently! -for a couple hrs! What happened?
Thanks again mate! Changing out a mercury 3000, junk and prone to wear; increasingly hard to locate parts or unavailable. I have ordered a Yamaha 6x3, I am assuming the push/pull mechanics are the same ?
I got my shirt in a few days ago. Thanks man, that was very nice of you!😊 I noticed that Australia writes the date different than US with day first compared to month first.
So does the Philippines Stu..they write month day year. My wife has had many issues here in the beginning. But then again the Philippines is/was very Americanised. How's that for a nice word...lol
Ah, interesting. I took a look here to see what the spread was and I didn't notice the two other purple dots. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country
Hey with this hack would i be abel to use my 703 control box to move the boat foward when i select revers ? As i just changed my outboard and noticed that the control box is designed to be mounted on the right side of the boat but i need it mounted to the left side of the boat
Dangar Marine so i would need a left hand side controll box to mount the control box on the left side of the boat and select the gears to the proper way?
Worked perfectly. I didn’t have a spare so I did exactly what you suggested regarding grinding the pivot points and tip it. and it worked ! Thanks so much !
Dangar I'm hoping you can help me out. I have twin yamaha's and my forward controls are not opening the throttles at the same rate. They start out fine at first but then the more you give it gas the larger the discrepancy between throttles. When I run at high speed the right handle has to be more forward that the left for both engines to have the same rpm. I thought at first that the throttle/cable parts/levers on the outboards could be loose or worn out. But they are fine. Both have been synchronized at neutral and at idle. Both idle at 700 rpm.
The idle stopper screws will set how far the throttle plates close and therefore your idle speed. I would adjust the cables to give you equal revs at full throttle and let the idle screws handle the balance at the low end.
@@DangarMarine Thank you for your reply! I have done that. They both idle at 700 rpm and with the binical handles all the way forward at full throttle they both run at equal rpm. (Sorry for the long post but this is quite difficult to convey in a text message, I'll do my best) The problem is at mid range. The binicals are not consistently opening the throttles at the same rate as I push the handles forward. They start out consistent up until they reach 2.5k rpm. After that point the discrepancy starts and the rpms get further and further apart as I move up the handles. To the point were one engine will be at 3.5k and the other at 5k with the handles at par with each other. I have visually inspected and measured the throttle openings between the idle screw and the stopper on both engines with the handles at par to each other at different positions in the mid range and I have confirmed that one is progressively opening more than the other. Again, at idle up to 2.5k they are the same, and at full throttle they are the same. But in between that range they open at different rates. If I want to run at 4k or 4.5k the levers have to be significantly at an offset, with one almost a full handle grip length further out than the other. What could be causing this? Wear in the binical? Wear in the throttle levers? (But I have checked them and don't show wear and all parts are identical) I am very puzzled by this. Please let me know what you think. Thank you!!
