Totally agree with your analysis. This film offers nothing except nice set pieces and photography. It’s bloated with unnecessary exposition, fails to build tension or atmosphere and- worst of all- does not offer up anything even close to fright.

Anytime it started to get scary or interesting a character would wake up the next day. It had to happen at least 6 or 7 times. There would be great tension and build up only to end with a character waking up the next day wondering what happened.

@BamaShanks I completely agree. It was a big fail for me, and i'm a long time Lover of anything vampire movie. Everybody has their own thoughts and opinions. It's just crazy to think that the majority of the people really liked this movie. I just thought it was kind of a dark comedy. I was laughing my ass off throughout the whole thing. My wife kept slapping my arm. Telling me it's not a comedy. It's a horror movie.🤣🤣🤣🤣And I would say,Well babe its funny to me, And another thing people are talking about, Oscar performances.Which one was an Oscar worthy performance? It was all over the top None of the performances felt real at all. They all felt comedic. I really
think they're just trying to get johnny depp's daughter her first oscar, In my opinion, this one wasn't it. Horrible she should go back to acting school

@ everyone I watched it hated it. Everyone around me in the theater seemed to hate it as well. I thought it was beautifully shot and there were some good performances and some bad, but the pacing was the only thing horrifying about the movie. I thought the scene with Orlok and Thomas at dinner was great until it cut to Thomas waking up on the floor. Nicholas Hoult acting scared in that scene was great. That is really the only scene that I thought was exceptional, but it was ruined by having Thomas wake up on the floor. At that point it was the 3rd or fourth time that had a character “wake up” after experiencing something.

I didn’t have a bad time at the film. That said you are pretty accurate in your comments. This is a movie that is more style over substance. The issue is everyone wants to be a part of the next masterpiece. Every movie that is on the “artistic “ side of cinema will have its film snobs praise it to a point of hyperbole.
I also agree that the Lily performance was borderline goofy. It felt like she was trying to act possessed during a game of charades and her card was The Exorcist.
Keep doing your thing. You are not far off the mark in most of your opinions.

Actually, I think Depp was channeling Isabelle Adjani's performance in Possession (1981). Adjani played the same role as Depp in the 1979 Nosferatu.

I agree, this movie's story just never connected with me and when I wasn't cringing, I was either rolling my eyes or nodding off. The acting was over the top or even at times just a slog to listen to. People say Willem Dafoe took them out of the movie but I say Lily Rose Depp was so much worse and she's supposed to carry this film. As soon as Lily Rose started talking I knew it was going to be a bumpy ride, she was a complete caricature and all I could see was an actor reading lines.

@@-kdot-2332 Peter Jackson's King Kong was supposed to be a large cinematic spectacle for the progression of CGI which it still looks great to this day. Del Toro's Nightmare Alley was a classic Del Toro science fiction thriller with a winding story with twists and turns around your brain a bit. Calling both of those movies popcorn flicks are super disingenuous, even to King Kong when it's like 3 hours long if not longer I don't fully recall. Popcorn flicks would be something like Boy Kills World or Killers Game. Nosferatu is definitely an acquired taste when it comes to film. I'd say it's more of a visual centered film than story oriented which isn't bad, but it leaves everything feeling lacking and the story that is presented does little to hold me to the screen. I'm glad it's being praised so maybe he can create something new that I will enjoy, but this was just very disappointing and I do think it comes from people constantly droning on about it being something of greatness and award worthy.

This comes from someone who loves Arthouse films and has a lot of patience for slow burns. I wouldn't consider Nosferatu Arthouse. It is definitely teetering on that line, but Arthouse is like the movies High Life, A Clockwork Orange, and Killing Of A Sacred Deer or even Midsommar.

  • @ThePragmaticScorpio
    @ThePragmaticScorpio 8 днів тому +1

I enjoyed it enough to see it twice but certainly understand the criticisms and have a few of my own. For one, after the initial meeting between Thomas and Orlok it lacked the same level of tension and dread I felt during The Witch, which was surprising considering you had Eggers directing and an antagonist in Orlok who is supposed to be the embodiment of evil.
It was also a bit too reliant on aesthetics. So while I was able to get immersed into the world on a visual level, the characters and their motivations were not the most compelling leaving the movie to drag a bit especially when Orlok was off-screen.
As far as LRD's performance, it was all over the place for me. I thought she handled the physical aspects of the character well, but when she was reciting some of her lines I felt like I was watching a high school stage play.

Van Helsing = Swiss doctor, Renfield = Knock, Nosferatu = Dracula etc. If you read Bram Stoker and then watch this movie it's the exact same story with the names and some of the places changed. To me these are two separate stories at most because they are based on two different Medieval wood carvings of the same folklore.

I really do not understand why anyone would be so hyped about this film, it has endless issues, from weird uncomfortable twisted diddler like bedroom fun fantasy's that I found just laughable then gross, to even more sinful thing's like terrible pacing, plot amounting to the main characters not changing a single thing that was written, they couldn't make Nosferotu doubt for even 1 second that he would succeed, the film has a horrible way of showing the passing of time, it was so difficult to gauge if time had passed for the characters, like them being aware an time going by, them doing the usual daily stuff that even this film didn't want to subject us to, or if they became aware during the scene at hand, an they saw what we saw an only that, it was never made clear,
then there was the ultimate sin, it was just freaking boring,
so much so people walked out of my theater an never came back, something not even the red one- managed to do.
The ending was just so unsatisfying an not in a- the bad guy won bleek kind of way, it was just an atrocious story, shame to because they had amazing actors, ok crisp visuals, but the script man, it was just bad,
Plus it had endless scary movie skit moments, it made me wonder if they actually want the writers of the next scray movie to have lots of material, they basically wrote the jokes an skits for them, idk man it was awful in so many ways, plus I hated the way Nosferotu looked.

    • @didgruntleddansnyderfan
      @didgruntleddansnyderfan 23 дні тому

I think it looked good, and some of the actors did a good job. As for the story, it's a Medieval story based on Medieval folklore. Obviously that hasn't attended all the appropriate writing classes, so you sort of have to take it for what it is. It's definitely pre-Edgar Allan Poe horror, and you can't really expect any post-Edgar Allan Poe beats in it. When we're all dead and everything has turned to dust, if America is remembered for anything it will be for inventing the horror genre from Poe to Lovecraft. And it existed before that, but was like this movie: Morality tales, self sacrifice and not losing your soul more than simply scaring the audience. Not a big apologist for this particular movie, but I feel I have to take a bit of a stand for European folklore. It served a different function than modern horror. That's all.

Sure, but that's the Medieval myth/story. Make the boogaboo too smart and it becomes incredible that the hero wins in the end. Conceptually it's the same problem you get with alien invasion movies these days. Either it's a fumbled attempt at invading Gooberville, Nebraska, population 103, like in AvP 2, which is embarrassing and pathetic, or it's the big ship thing from Independence Day where they dun up and built an easily exploitable weakness into the Death Star again for some reason, and that doesn't work either. Or perhaps creatures allergic to water - the third most common element in the Universe - invading a planet 70% covered in water like in Signs. I mean none of it really works. For story telling purposes, smart villains must be mortal and supernatural villains need to be stupid. Otherwise you can't credibly beat them and now your story makes no sense.

I immediately went home and rented bram stoker's dracula from the 90s to wash off the bad taste.
The director removed all the nuance, and made dracul evil cuz he's bad; popcorn horror jumpscares, awful sound design with zero environment depth (bottles opened at the back of the scene sound in your face); the music is non stop, the sfx for jumpscares is loud enough to make anyone deaf; the female lead unable to maintain her accent, the dialogue saying "it's stupid" in 1800s rather than "it's insanity", while nosferatu using the word "backwards" even tho he lives in the heart of romania and not even the english men would use that word in such manner for another 200 years...
The movie has no class, it doesn't understand the story nor the motivations of the characters. Wilhelm Dafoe made every other actor look like a child who's just happy they can work with him and learn from his acting. It's like watching an adaption of bloodborne by someone who didn't play the game.

@phoenixkirchoff5268 this version of vampire does a good job of highlighting the animus of the Victorian-era female sexual repression. I left a comment , said something about a24 being almost like a cult and personally I found the film in question a recycled 70s horror film in both the style and the script and it worries me how there's nothing but praise for their projects as film critics should not do promos for movies but review them. And there's always something to be critical about regardless of how great you might think the product is. You know, I think they just had Dafoe there in that role to be a "comedic relief", to break the tension a little while still providing a practical purpose. However, with there being no actual tension and most of it ending up looking like a stage-play done by second-tier actors trying to be dramatic, it just ends up being a character who only creates more comedy, and pointless one, in an already silly amalgamation.
At the core, they just focused so much on visuals and grandeur that they forgot entirely that THAT alone can't carry a movie. And they struggled so hard to not fall into the cheap horror tropes that they ended up making something that struggles to really find some grounding or establish itself. It just is. Just saw it at the theater. My first thought was the film dragged around the second act. That was my major complaint. Secondary was that Orlock looked like Stock Zombie#1 with about the same personality.
I think I had too high of hopes for this film, being a fan of Eggers. If I didn't know it was him directing, I'd assume it was a promising up and comer making a mediocre horror film. I think empty is a good way of describing how this movie made me feel.

Adam you're speaking truth! I wanted so much to love this movie, but I didn't. They let out ALL the tension and air out of this film when the Count and her meet in person... and nothing actually happens. It felt like a balloon got popped and anything that happened after that first meeting was pointless... we didn't need further convincing he was a vampire and going to kill everybody, but it's like the movie KEPT trying to hammer the point home that a vampire was in town. WE KNOW! Then the 3 night returning thing went on and on... it made no sense for this film, even if it's the source material for literature, in this movie it doesn't work for pacing. They never gave us a reason WHY she's so smitten with him at all.

People are ACTUALLY slamming you for as "not knowing history" because you criticise the vampire's moustache ?? I can find you any number of paintings and wood cuttings depicting nobles from that region, FROM the 15th Century who were clean shaven. Yes, "Dracula" had a moustache in Stoker's novel, but if we're going all in on Stoker's vision, then WHY even bother calling the vampire "Orlok" instead of "Dracula" -- after all that's what Werner Herzog did with his 1979 version ~ LOL!

The original was more iconic. Superb production on the new one, doesn't mean being the best film ever. The ones who like it, over praise it. It's a really good movie. It's not the best genre movie of 2024, it's not even Egger's best film.
The story was not engaging, too many shadows, too much restrain.

I liked it, but it is my least favorite movie of his. I agree about Depp’s performance. The mustache was comical and I could stop seeing Nigel Thornberry, but I did enjoy his performance. Glad someone else is getting tired of Dafoe being the same guy, he’s slowly becoming Kevin Costner. I didn’t hate the ending, though a lot of that could be due to the SE in the scene. Other than I liked it, you made some well explained points. Good stuff 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I was really hoping for a reimagining of this film. I found the cinematography to be competent. The sets were captivating. And the film had me entertained until the scenes in the castle ended. Then it felt like a retelling of coppola's Dracula. The narrative unfolded very predictively and the ending left me unsatisfied. Like Adam, I found Niholas Hoult's performance wanting but I rather think it was the way the character was written. I kind of wished they gave that main role to Aaron Taylor- Johnson and as he has more emotional range. The gypsies were interesting and wish they added more to them in the story. And they should of further explored alchemy with Willem Dafoe character. I prefer the The Last Voyage of the Demeter over this film.

Where the hell does he bite people ? It surely is not the neck ! Oh wait, of course they've needed to show some boobies in the movie.
When Orlock was finally revealed the entire cinema broke out in laughter. That was my experience with the movie.
Oh and one guy in the audience said (a little louder) towards the end "Come on man now kill her so we are finally done with it !" And he got applause !
Btw: I am an absolute fan of Murnau's original Nosferatur, also of the Klaus Kinsky remake AND "Shadow of the Vampire" with Willem Dafoe, yes the same Willem Dafoe, playing Count Orlock.
I have to add that the audio and sound design of this movie is incredible.
Ps.: This post is a copy of a text i've already postet on "Adam Does Movies" other Nosferatu review.

Went to see it because everyone was raving about it and it was a snooze fest. Beautiful photography but frustrating watch, performances were kind of funny at times, not scary at all (wasn’t it supposed to be?)… orlok looked like Jim Carey’s dr robotnik with that mustache… one of my friends actually fell asleep… also it got kind of disgusting after a while, I’m not a prude, but all the moaning, hornyness, etc got annoying really fast. And what’s up with the necrophilia?? It was SO unnecessary and it didn’t seem like logical for that character to do that, to me it seemed that they didn’t know what to do with his character.
