One year winter came early in Colorado and it started to snow before Halloween, we had our Halloween decorations up and weren’t able to take them down until it turned to spring and underneath all of our Halloween stuff were millions of ladybugs! We had an insane amount of ladybugs that year (good timing too because we also had a crazy amount of Aphid eggs on our apple trees) so I like to think that year we saved my yard from an insane aphid invasion because we were too wussy to take down the Halloween decorations that year
3:02 I’ve been there, it’s a lake called Lake Tahoe. This picture doesn’t do it much justice, but the water is so clear you can see down about 30 feet (maybe more, I don’t really remember). It’s also a few miles across and about 20 miles long. It’s made completely of snow melt from the Sierra Nevada mountains above it. It’s in the middle of the desert but the water is freezing. It’s really high above sea level, too. It’s in between some mountains above Reno. It’s super cool.
Dang, I've been to Tahoe so many times because the quickest way out of Reno sometimes is a couple of spare State Routes, but I've never noticed an island in the lake, and the waves are usually choppy as all hell. Did a quick Google, and it's Fannette island, on the Cali side. The image is a stock one from Wikipedia.
Jordan Olsen better than up taking though. I've had to turn off many videos because of up talkers. My brain can't handle being bombarded with questions.
Astaxanthin is actually a very potent antioxidant. Maybe you might want to eat the pink snow... or harvest it and extract the astaxanthin, which sells for a good bit.
actually learned something, hiked the Harding Ice Fields here in Alaska and saw red snow and figured it was from Iron in the ground. Now I know. how about that

I'm in Alaska and we have frogs here that freeze solid in the winter then, come spring, thaw out and hop away. It is getting warmer here though. record warm summer, now winter is slow to materialize. I would love to visit Africa, but anything over about 22C and i am sweating balls. !Happiness!
They only produce these because they had a huge number of people asking them for them so they could rewatch without having to see the intro, outro, and adverts all the time.
pholotic magmas are viscous because of a high silicate composition. Silicates have a much lower melting point than iron, hence the pasty nature. Viscous magma (and in particular felsic magma) has a tendency to trap air bubbles which releases under substantial pressures producing these "Lava Bombs". Also: In magma H2O is considered as a volatile fluid that can reduce the melting point of most rock.
Aha! Compilation wasn't in the title! You almost tricked me into watching the only SciShow videos I don't watch... (because I've already seen them, but I would recommend them to others of course!)
Reminds me of a sci-fi book that I heard of as a teeny-bopper years ago where there was an ice that would convert everything it touched into some form of ice. Anybody have a clue as to the name of the book?
Standing in one location on snow could also exert your gravity's force on that one layer obviously goes down through that however it has to go through that top layer and might melt it a little bit just due to gravity of such a large object in comparison to its own size.
How can you tell if something is slippery if you're standing still. As soon as you begin the process of "slipping" on a molecular level, that first movement would cause friction?
Since water can evaporate way below the boiling point depending and the rate depends on the humidity i dont see why it cant behave similar in the solid to liquid phase.
If I'm cooking something, and put it in the freezer, the ice that forms on it looks and feels different than snow or ice that forms outside during a Canadian winter. Would that still be ice I?
I don't know if it's watermelon snow but the beartooth pass in MT has pink snow. I was surprised they didn't mention it especially since the show is from MT
Seems like with battery electric powered vessels that island near the Antarctic would be a easy source of electrical generation without even getting terribly close or impacting the phenomenom.
Nah dude it would speed up the death of the star by an insignificant amount depending on the water, fuelling the Fusion process as well to cause a flare up
I didn't see any praying mantises in southern Iowa until my late teenage years. I looked really hard in my youth, but I didn't find any mantises until I was 17. And I didn't find them in grandparent's 8 acres, but my parents 1/8th acre in a small town.
Ha. My parents told me not to eat watermelon snow because it was POISONOUS. Mom was a microbiologist, but she got her degree in Austin, Texas in the late 60s, so she may have been thinking of red tides in Galveston. We saw watermelon snow in the San Juan mountains in Colorado in summer, up at 9,000 feet or higher. Betcha it's too warm at that elevation now, though; this would've been in 1983 or so.

The way Olivia's voice trails off at the end of a sentence drives me insane... you can't unhear it

That's depressing. You should tell your thermometer, "Don't be so negative."

They're pretty rare outside of Minecraft.😂
That made me laugh. Especially because when he said it, I was just thinking how I didn't know that Lava lakes where a thing IRL.
We really appreciate everything you guys do on this channel and for people all over the world. Great job everyone and keep up the good work.
Ladybugs seem to have developed a new strategy recently. Wintering inside my house.

I have no idea how we as humans deserved Sci show. You never fail to entertain and educate me. True heros.
I really enjoyed the part about the volcano.

Still not as bad as the SciShow intro not being perfectly centered.
