  • How to Use Hügelkultur in Raised Garden Beds, Hugelkultur horticultural technique/permaculture principle for backyard gardening.
Hoocho walks us through the pros and cons of using Hügelkultur in your raised garden beds.
Hügelkultur is a horticultural technique where a mound constructed from decaying wood debris and other compostable biomass plant materials is later (or immediately) planted as a raised bed. Adopted by permaculture advocates, it is suggested the technique helps to improve soil fertility, water retention, and soil warming, thus benefiting plants grown on or near such mounds.
Hoochos explores the worlds of Hydroponics, Aquaponics, Permaculture, Homesteading, Fermentation, Technology Vanlife and DIY Builds to look at the world through a larger lens that can incorporate the best of everything into a rich and rewarding lifestyle.
Through self sufficiency we can reduce consumption and increase our hyperlocal household production.

Im transitioning my patio container garden to this type of method. I can tell such a big difference between the two differently planted containers. New sub.

Cool. I appreciate you sharing your experience. There’re so many ways to do hügelkultur. I love seeing what folks come up with.
Question: you you find that you need to amend the beds with fertilizers (e.g. alfalfa meal, bone meal, whatever) to keep them productive?
And generally, how are you maintaining the beds as they settle etc?
    Thanks very much! Peace

I add excess excess plant matter from my hydroponic system to the top of the beds as mulch, and I’ve added blood and bone, pelletised fertiliser etc.

    Hey, great uploads.
I’m also in SE QLD, and surrounded by gums. What do you think about using eucalyptus leaf litter in the hugelkulturs?

I'm in SE QLD too mate, i've been looking for relevant content for our climate :)

It’s a hard climate to adapt techniques because we have such different problems to everyone else. When you tell people you have too much sun they just look at you funny.

Hoocho yes, that was one of the first things I learnt the hard way lol. Label said full sun, and it nearly died lol.

I’ve had to grow all my hydroponics under 70% shade cloth for the summer months. The sun is just that harsh.

What's the point of raised beds? The soil is not good?
