Amazed a 1976 Vette could achieve 120MPH...before promptly blowing up, lol! You'll improve it, though, to hold together at that speed. And beyond! That's a pretty car, and it deserves whatever attention you feel like giving it.
@@frankkeel8410 I miss the Autobahn of the 1980s...where one COULD do 140 MPH all day. I couldn't get away with that back in 1980s America where the speed limit...if I were lucky...could be 60-65...
Hmmmm.....#'s matching block?? Since the crank is either shot or requires a regrind, IMHO, I would say a nice 383 stroker kit, cam/springs, heads, and induction after some machining on the block. In any event, that block needs saving even if it's only a 2 bolt to be put in the corner as it's original to the car. Had an '82 that was custom but it was a dog. Now my '90 was modded and I got up to 165 with still more pedal but it was scary on the turnpike and not the place.
Back in the day we would do poor man rebuilds. We would clean up the journals and slap in some fresh bearings. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn’t.
I had an 81 that did the same thing. I rebuilt it to a 355 which made a huge difference after adding some go-fast goodies. The car was made into a convertible in an earlier life and drew a lot of attention. Sold it at a Bloomington Gold Mecum auction to someone in Birmingham.
I rebuilt an engine then first run out put a con rod right through the block. 🤦♂ Bits of cast iron covered in oil floating down the road. Guess I skipped the page on torque settings. 🤣😂 she sounds great BTW 😘👌 just like mine for 2 mins
I'm old enough to remember how people were amazed at how underpowered the stock 76 was yet it was one of the best selling model years to date. Not taking a dig, but I thought the base engine wasn't even geared for 120 mph LOL. Maybe that was an L82?
Before I bought my C4 ZR-1, I was looking at C3s. So many have side pipes on them. I would have traded someone the side pipes for longtubes and a regular exhaust. Nothing like burning your legs every time you get out of the vehicle. Not sure why the side pipes were such a popular mod
I used to own a 1991 Pontiac Trans am 5.0 . 120,000 MI . Nathan mistake of letting my oldest daughter drive it. When I get it back it sounded exactly like that . Either she blew the motor or one of her boyfriends blew the motor
When you consider all the parts and labor needed (machine shops are becoming scarce and are expensive) the cost even for a Chevrolet small block would be much higher than for a new crate engine replacement.
Hello from Australia CorvetteBen, can you please tell what you think on the 1980 C3 Corvette (Californian 305 engine) would it be worth buying or not .. Thanks
@@rea8755 I have had a C4 Corvette before and loved it ... this C3 has come my way and I'm trying to find out more about this model and wether it is worth the purchase ... atm not sure of mileage or condition until I can see it.
lord take this piston from its cylinder wall ! it Kant hold it any more !its getting dark to dark to see as the oil is burning off the exhaust as the piston is free !
Let's see key safety pins missing from steering rods, to remove pan. Pan different color than rest of engine and a newish gasket. Can't imagine this rod's been knocking before. Nope, not fishy to me...
your next child Benjamin . Will be a girl. 😁😆😅🤣why? Because girls are a gift from God. Without them we would not be here. Now regarding the 76 vette I Like It. my cousin in law had one many many years ago and like you. he was mechanically inclined. 😎
"Moths to a flame, they hear an engine and come running" you go Dad!!!😊
I’m an old man and when it comes to engines I’m still drawn like moths to a flame
@@mattbrown9484 well let me start my Girl Vette! Blessings
Your boys are definitely car guys! 🤣
nice to see you have some helpers
By the time I ever get my dream car 1981 Corvette, I'll have to bring it to "Corvette Josh". Better start his UA-cam channel now. LOL 😆
It sounds like that engine needs to be rebuilt. Nice looking car but you start with the engine first great job man love what you do
Ya just gotta love it when the ka slamma lamma ding dong fairy catches up to you.
Nice ride, ok Ben have at it, make it right.
It was so nice to see your boys again. They’re so cute! Long time fan in Istanbul.
Hate it for the owner but as always love any and all Corvette content.
Also the family is awesome!

My 77 l=82 will do it all day 140

Looking forward to watching you put a new motor in this very nice Corvette.
Ben, really like your videos. A corvette is in my future in the next year or so. Please keep up with the great corvette videos. Thank you.

Yeah, few $hundred in parts would bump old engine to 350 - 500 HP...

The ‘76 steering wheel. When what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas. But boy, we wish it would have.
My Blueprint has no issues at 120MPH LOL but change that stock TH350 when you throw it in or he will be back in a few months LOL

Given the rest of the car I wouldn't be surprised if the engine got some upgrades along the way.
Sub'd - keep up the great videos
Sweet car
The owner needs to up grade to a 4L80E while putting in the engine as well. Better gas mileage and higher top speed with the overdrive.
Allow me to be (probably) the ten millionth person to say your boys are super cute!
pull off another bearing cap that has not failed and see if their all just worn out.

He painted the steering wheel, dash ,door panels white ?

You mentioned some type of steering box. I am about to put a new steering box on my 68 vette. Are there better options than stock?
He mentioned a Borgeson steering box. They are about as good as it gets for stock replacements, but they just do stock.
Where is part 2 of the caddy brake conversion?
Don't you think a simple rebuild would do (instead of a new engine) and retain the "numbers" aspect?
When you consider all the parts and labor needed (machine shops are becoming scarce and are expensive) the cost even for a Chevrolet small block would be much higher than for a new crate engine replacement.
Customer’s decision not mine. With the crate he still has the option to rebuild the original anyways
@@TheCorvetteBen and he's back on the road quickly too. I'm still looking for a 73 454 convertible
Come buy mine $45k
@@TheCorvetteBen is that the red one or orange one?
Its not that bad just needs a light rebuild probably a stroker kit since the crank is bad
Ben can't you just polish the crank journal and replace the bearing?
Instead of replacing the motor what about rebuilding this one (if it is Numbers matching)
Make sure to mention your customer was in Mexico when he blew it up.

Depends on the price. It's described as the worst ever. Not having a Corvette and wanting one is worstever. Do research for parts availability.😊

From looks of iol pan gasket its been into

a little Bondo on the bearing and it'll be right as rain.

120 for a corvette is not that fast. The motor is probably just tired being from 1976.
It is for that one. The L48 engine only made 180hp.
Even brand new, they were a dog.
So you know it knocked so you keep on trying to start it not my kind of shop sorry
Malaise era build quality strikes again.
I think he made a bad decision for going to 120 mph.
What do you expect from them they're little boys inquiring minds want to know .
knockin because 4th gear forces these engines to turn at like 5500rpm. GM designed it using idiots
First!
Ditch the junk Fram and stop using them.
Emory cloth in the crank and throw ina new rod bearing. Redneck rebuild. Lmao
