Small apartment with popout kitchen celebrates light & flow

  • To add light and space to a cramped 60 square meter flat (645 square feet), Laura Bonell knocked down most of the walls to leave everything open except bathroom and bedrooms and used a furniture wall to divide the remaining space.
To keep the remodel affordable, she used MDF (medium-density fiberboard) to build a pop-out kitchen, including a refrigerator, pantry, and coffee/smoothie bar. The backside of this furniture houses the couple’s clothes closets and partitions space for an entry room.
To add height to the Barcelona apartment, Bonell and her partner Daniel López-Dòriga removed the false ceiling to expose Catalan vaults (brickwork arches). They painted the brickwork white to add a reflective layer and lighten the home.
At the far end of the flat, they added eight tall and narrow windows in two-toned wood which can be opened and closed separately and frame the courtyard - and neighbors - in a style reminiscent of Hitchcock’s “Rear Window”. To carve out a “room” near the view, they added a bench and shelving, creating a reading - or viewing - nook.
The MDF furniture continues throughout the home beginning with a key shelf by the front door and curving to frame the bathroom, add a table to the kitchen, and supply couches to the living room. At one end of the space, the MDF is used to create a music room with a desk and shelving from the material. The owners are both musicians who work from home, and often teach students, so having designated “rooms” is imperative.

A very interesting apartment with some very clever storage solutions. I love the green storage pods. Great solution to create a room within a room and clearly defines the spaces. The use of curves everywhere creates a softness instead of having sharp angles and corners everywhere. Very individual space with character unlike a lot of modern soul-less spaces. Love it.

I love how the architect expanded the floor using the old and the new floors . I will save the video on that alone. Very delicate. She achieved much better lighting than before. So much so people feel she wasted space. Give me a break. She created space.!!!Exactly what the clients wanted. So check on that. I would of never even bought the dingy apartment in the first place. 😂That takes visión on the part of the owners and a great many solutions on the part of the professional hired. I loved the huge rear window. I like the idea of how she separated the private space from the living space and the colors. The use of affordable materials is fantastic. It is very useful when architectural solutions are applied and materials are made to look better than what they are. Not everyone can afford to tear down and rebuild everything, plus buy new bathroom fixtures and expensive European kitchens. I would of rounded the corners of the green closet in the entrance to feel it guide but not interrupt me. Although that may have been a budgetary constraint. The closet outside of the tiny bedroom is a must . I also noticed how she gave each person a very distant and separate working space. I am sure working from home couples appreciate that. Thanks for showing all the solutions. They can actually be like 20 meters apart during a pandemic period.
I feel like the architect was a little nervous showing the apartment and in a second language. It would of been much easier for her to show in Spanish and let the non-bilinguals try to figure it out. Many professional women are eroded from their confidence throughout their professional and personal lives because of gratuitous criticism even when they went an extra mile.
So congratulations to her. She will only get better at everything.
And women of the world, would you show other women trying to make it a little kindness, would you? Because you kind of suck at sorority.
I noticed the filmmakers are women too. I am subscribing on that alone. I want to see the world 🌎 with different eyes !
    Thanks so much ! 💪💕

This young designer is extremely gifted and should try to ignore the negative comments. This is a beautiful, brilliant and nuanced use of the available space. Grouping all the storage at the entrance in the low cabinets within the darkest area is smart. The angle adds greatly to the experience of the spaces where one spends all of ones waking time. I don't particularly like mirrors at eye level but her entry cleverly doubles as a dressing room where mirrors are useful.

I think the idea of not having everything 'linear' is quirky and fun. Although I think it only worked out because the apartment is pretty spacious: if they have something smaller than this, the 'non-linear' design might work against the functionality of the space.
But overall a warm and inviting space. Thank you Kirsten for making this video :)

She says: "when you come in you see the big mirror", but I didn't... I saw that huge green monster being the side of the large closet, my first idea was to put a mirror on it, but then I saw the other big mirror deeper down the two closets and I changed my idea: some beautiful full size poster would be nice, or someone could paint smth on it, that would break that big green monster and make it lighter.
That was the one game breaker to me, and I wouldn't have FIXED the dining table, the rest of the appartment is quite good.

I bet the feeling of the diagonals in person feels expansive rather than the confinement perpendicular lines would give. It's a long rectilinear space and I think those diagonals really help. The end of the closet that confront you at the entry is a bit unappealing to me. Perhaps placing art on it covering it with a fun wall paper would help. There's a nice separation of the areas. I think the built ins and curves are amazing. Exceptional design that works so well with that amazing ceiling. That bump out lounge is so clever and affords a real sense of it being a separate space when using it.

The storage wall is practical, but visually it makes the space look smaller and cramped. I'm not even sure the colours work. Floor is also too busy

it was a good call to relocate the kitchen and bathroom. maximising the light and opening up that access to the terrace turned those weird nooks into valuable space. i would have done the same, even if the repiping was expensive.

Ceiling could have been lime washed. That keeps some of the colour of the bricks and reflects light. Line washing also reacts with the texture of brick making some whiter than others. The eye immediately sees this as a true and accurate representation of the brick texture. In this way harmony is maintained. Long live lime wash! Much more could have been made of the terrace and its relationship to the apartment. Much more. Interesting use of diagonals though and good use of light all round.

I lived in Barcelona for almost one year. The studio that was rented had the original floor plan all empty, so the landlord made it modular. As you enter in the studio it had the ‘bedroom’ which was made out of plywood, living only with my girlfriend was okay, but when someone came to visit we didn’t have much privacy as it had this hollow rectangular shape made higher in the wall. The rest of the space was this opened kitchen / living area. The neighbors had a couch right in front of the door, next to the couch this bar/kitchen area and right ‘glued’ to it the bedroom which had 3 walls and a curtain for entrance. The bathroom was in front of the bathroom. The cool thing about it was that it has this continuous space from the entrance to the small balcony. We didn’t have any balcony and the way the bedroom was built made it feel less ‘airy’.

The first thing I thought was : why is the bedroom not in the back room/living room and vice-versa ? First, you can sleep with no street noise, second, you have the bathroom next to you, and third, plenty space for closets, and as she said that the couple are musicians, they could teach right at the entrance of their flat to the rooms facing the streets. This arrangement would provide more privacy for the private area : the bedroom, with the walls as the bathroom wall, so as to have light thru and next to it an office area. Of course that would be my choice. And obviously the people who live there are entitled to their preferences. I like the kitchen, and the customization of the long shelf along the wall.

The good: Keeping original floor, mixing tile. Felt authentic. Plastering the vaulted ceiling white, good for reflecting the limited natural light. Ditto moving the bathroom. Kitchen cupboard holds quite a bit and doesn't look cluttered. It lets light over the top, which is good. Dining table placement is good. Most of the lighting fixtures are good. Livability is high, many details have been considered for the convenience and lifestyle of the occupants.
The bad: The entry. The color of the plywood. A lighter baltic birch ply would have been better. The various plywood pieces here and there lacks the polish and quality of more robust built in/joinery. The wall between the kitchen and the study/music space could have used a cutout to let more of that scarce natural light in. The kitchen could have a backsplash or mirrors to carry natural light further in.
Overall, us commenters are unaware of the budget and the priorities of the client. More money could have been used to solve some of the problems that we identify that perhaps the client could care less about. I'd change a few minor things but overall it's a charming place and she did a good job.

Yes! It would have made the place look like it had even more light. The green colour really draws the eyes to it every time. The placement and size of that whole thing plus the weird angle it had was such an eye sore. The layout of the whole kitchen/closet could have been done better.

All of you must be new to this channel. All the comments have to do with small space design. This channel is about alternative living. Choices that make life more minimal sometimes, but ultimately about how spaces feel to live in and what architecture and design can do to enhance our lives. When we intentionally choose our surroundings to meet our personal needs and lifestyle choices.

@Arisa Ari thanks for the info,
I based my info on wiki Barcelona , which described the climate as dry mediterranean with hot dry summers, and mild cool winters.
I stand corrected if u actually live in Barcelona.
When I was in Perth , Australia many years ago , which is also defined as Mediterranean hot dry summers and mild , cool winters, humidity in summer ranges from teens to 30 % , and I find many buildings in Perth smell fresh and not musty, even if the building is close to 90 years old.
Many of the buildings in Perth are stuck in the 1970s decor but they smelled neutral and not musty.
So I thought Barcelona was like Perth, dry meditterranean

The clumsy closet suffocated me at the first sight..however, when I watched for the second time, I really fell in love with the design.
    1. The working areas of the owners are separated clearly and distantly, which is a good thing for two musicians
    2. The owners love cooking and wanted a bigger kitchen. This is nicely done
