Three New Species & A Pair Of Hybrids! | Duck Hunting Public Land
Вставка

- For a first year waterfowl hunter in Virginia this is about as good as it gets. Our buddy Alan was quite the good luck charm on the duck hunting outings he was a part of and these three hunts were some special ones to say the least. He was able to get three new species, with one of those being part of a pair of black duck x mallard hybrids and all of them were taken on Virginia public land to boot. Hope you enjoy!

Getting super anxious for this upcoming season best of luck and keep up the hard work!!
Thank brother! Hope you have a great season as well as a safe one
Dude pulled two black ducks out the water like they were regular mallards
Man this pre season content gets me fired up!
Thanks brother! Just a few more days and I'll hopefully have the first hunt of this season coming out
They are commonly called “mottled” black ducks. I grew up calling them Florida black ducks - the second one looks to be a 1st generation mottle because the more they mate with other black/mallards, the more “impure” the specific species line becomes.
The mottled ducks that you get down in Florida are actually their own species that don't range as far north as where I hunt. I bet a mottled/mallard hybrid doesn't look all that different from a black duck/mallard hybrid though
Great hunt as usual. That woody call sounds awesome I ve never experienced nor heard of a frozen firing pin but can certainly understand it happening. I had a guy hunting with me once that accidentally dropped his 870 in the water during a really cold snap and slide/ action was frozen shut.
Thanks for sharing
Great work. Another awesome episode. This must be a full time job pumping out this many videos.
Nice video
Thanks Kraig!
Beautiful morning.
That it was! A sunrise over a Virginia swamp will alway be special to me
Three minutes in and Tsippa was thinking she could help you out.
She would've been a very welcome addition to the blind!
Nice video man... so the question is.......... did your coworker get hooked or what?
I can confirm that I am hooked!
Great episode!!!! Can’t wait for duck season in wisconsin but first early goose and teal!!
Me too brother! Seeing many teal up yet?
@@HokeOutdoors actually ya we have a bunch really around us that hang out all summer thanks to lots of marsh’s and backwaters around me. The geese tho are everywhere right now in pretty big groups already in oat fields.
@@HokeOutdoors but honestly hoping I can get my dream duck a widgeon
Hope one shows up in the spread for ya! Glad to hear about the geese and teal too!
@@HokeOutdoors thanks man good luck this year and can’t wait for more of your content!!
Good stuff Thomas!
Thanks Jon!
Them were some nice Duck dropping in. It`s ashame Thomas you couldn`t get any closer to the one`s you jumped up going through the ice. Enjoyed it
Thanks Chuck! I think if I had waited to go back there just a little while longer the ice would've melted but I wasn't sure there were ducks back there
Great video
Thanks Craig!
Great video I want to try to kill a black duck this season but it’s tuff here
Come hunt the New England shore line. We get tons of them here in the salt marshes late season. So many you almost get bored of shooting them by the end of the season.
There's a few down there but they're definitely in isolated pockets from what I've seen. Hope you get one this season though!
@@HokeOutdoors thanks we for sure putting in the work
It’s tuff here to 🫱
@@MichiganOutdoorsUnlimited I get it
where in va are they’re gadwals. love the videos 🤟🏼
Thanks brother! You can find them in a lot of swamps east of I-95. They don't seem as prevalent to the west although you can run into them now and again
@@HokeOutdoors no kidding, i hunt some swamps and flooded timber spots in the stafford area and have never seen any gadwals. i’ve only seen 2 cans last year but they got spooked
Nice bro
Thoes we’re both just plain black ducks
Got my follow at the 5 minute mark😂👏🏼
Thanks brother!
😂😂😂 I smell what you’re smoking
Muy buenas cazerias amigos saludos
Gracias por ver
Is that the James river ? Or maybe the Appomattox ?
Is all I have to say is that's why I shoot a Browning I beat and I literally mean I BEAT the living shit out of that thing and I never have issues with it. Good video
What wood duck call do you use?
good brother
Thanks for watching!
Хорошая охота👍
What’s the brand of that wood duck call you were using?
Using a duck commander "woodie"
@@HokeOutdoors awesome thanks for the responds
What’s your wood duck call brand
I'm using a duck commander "woodie"
What were they smoking
Are all the VA public hunts WMAs?
Some but not all of them
@@HokeOutdoors any recommendations on places to walk in on?
What part of Virginia?
Firstttt
Was there marijuana consumption in this video
🇪🇨🇪🇨👍🤝
I hope that wasn't a bowl ya guys were passing around.
Haha no that was cork that we use for face camo. The smoke you saw was from Drew’s nicotine vape
@@HokeOutdoors that's good to know. I knew guys that would smoke up in the blind. It only happened once, and I was no more with them. Be safe bro!
BTW.. 8 think those "hybrids" were mottled ducks.
Lmao I seen sparks from the gun barrels..Probably one of those guys that shoots 10 min early and twenty minutes late...That's not the way bro...And you been doing this long enough to know...Thumbs down on this one just because if you gonna be there informative..Maybe tell ppl to hunt legally and shoot correct hrs
Seriously.. You think that because you can see a muzzle flash it means it's before shooting time? You can't possibly be that dense.
@@HokeOutdoors I'm not dense...I've hunted Pacific flyway for 25 yrs and yeah..I know when ppl shoot early....You couldn't see the ducks..All you seen is muzzle flash and hear a splash...Now you tell me you didn't shoot early...If I was a betting man..Probably 5 min early .No biggie just don't put it on camera
@@darenhayes7506 It’s a good thing you’re not a betting man then. We were more than five minutes into legal shooting time when we shot those birds. Do you realize that I’m filming these on GoPros? They don’t pick up much light at all in the first 30 minutes of shooting time, especially on an overcast day like that hunt.
Also for the non VA hunters these are three good VA duck hunts. Most of Thomas's stuff is insane VA waterfowl
How does your buddy like that maxus 2 thinking of getting one but have heard they struggle with dove loads
The intro gave me so much late-to-the-duck-hunt anxiety
Haha I can't even remember how exactly we got separated since we paddled in there together but it was definitely a cluster
Time to get a dog.
I'll be hunting with one much more this season
@@HokeOutdoors Sadly, I got to VA for work but my dogs are in CA. Love to join ya.
This video got my blood pumping!! Especially the second video!!
Love to hear it! Thanks for watching!
you should come hunt in Arkansas next season.
I'd love to! Might be able to make it out that way in December or January
“Jesus that’s bright” 😂 I’m dead
Haha gotta make sure all the guys are wide awake for shooting time!
Always fun hunting with good buddies
No doubt! New hunters and old buddies are a great combination to have in the duck blind
I'm excited for early goose. Gonna smack em down.
😭😭😭
Are you going to be hunting in Texas again this upcoming season?
Great video Thomas.
Thank Nasser!
What kind of cameras do you use for filming?
GoPro Hero 10s and I also have a Sony A7 that I get most of the b-roll with
What shells do you use for ducks?
Typically Kent 3 inch #2s
@@HokeOutdoors thanks man, enjoy your videos
what kinda gun are you using and what choke tube?
I'm using a Franchi Affinity 3 with a carlsons light modified choke
@@HokeOutdoors Franchi are a good gun, i used a franchi intensity in the same pattern 28” barrel with a cabelas black maxx ER choke and all i can say is i’m honestly impressed at how well it patterns if you ever come to southern ky i might be able to help you get on some birds
I love mine! Only ever had a couple days it didn't cycle right and those were almost always due to me not cleaning it when I should've. I'll let you know if I'm in KY at all this season!
@@HokeOutdoors i’ve had mine since 2021 turkey season is my all around bird gun and so far it hasn’t done me wrong yet and has proven its worth. if you got snap or fb add me on it and we will see if we can get on some geese or ducks we get good mixed bags around here
