Weren't your parents saying the same thing about the hideous racket you were listening to when you were you were young? Mine certainly did. All the best music has been outside the charts for a long time now, over 45 years that I know of (I'm 61). I just let the kids enjoy their thing while they're young enough to ( It won't be long before they're saying the same thing about what their kids are listening to), stick my headphones on and get jiggy with some Psychedelic Furs, Hanoi Rocks and Ramones.

I was so privileged once. I returned to school to study music. I am a true low bass; the "low voice" repertoire (read: baritone) is high voice to me. I was losing my voice (partly because my technique was still imperfect). I asked the school accompanist if he could transpose my recital piece down a M3 or m3. He was a perfectionist and politely declined, since we would not be able to rehearse it before the performance the next morning. When I showed up the next day, he said he would do it. He transposed it in his head, flawlessly. He was a Ph.D. in piano who once represented the USA in competition, but he was a humble man, and never properly appreciated by the academic egomaniacs who populate taxpayer-funded schools.

I have a very eclectic taste in music. As a child of the 70s/80s and then teen/early 20’s by the 90’s, my musical taste actually ranges from the 1940’s through today. Though there are very few musicians or sounds that impress me today. I can’t imagine hearing Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Smoky Robinson, Carole King, Freddy Mercury, Bono, Sting, Stevie Nicks, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Steve Perry and so many more from other decades and genres using pitch correction or auto tune. These were just people whom has God given talent and worked hard at perfecting their skill. They paid their dues to make a career for themselves. There are so few artists of today that impress me. Even someone like Taylor Swift, who at my age, I actually like, when you hear her sing live, her voice is not perfect, and it’s refreshing. No lip syncing when live. But anything recorded, by nearly anyone, to me is false talent….and I use the word talent lightly these days. Long gone are true musicians and singers.

Hearing pefect vocals these days saddens me. What often made Robert Plant stand out was his non-perfect vocals which, strangely enough, worked for him. The imperfections of Michael McDonald, David Ruffin, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin...it's what made them sound human. And when they nailed it, it was pure perfection! To this day I still get goosebumps when I listen to Ruffin hit "SOOOO" in My Girl. If everything is perfect, then nothing is outstanding.
Listening to imperfect humans reach for the stars and occasionally grabbing a handful of stardust is glorious!

I agree, but I consider there to be one exception to that general rule: Karen Carpenter of Carpenters. Her perfection, in pitch, in phrasing, singing (and playing drums) for her brother's nuanced arrangements was entirely authentic and human, and their music was therefore engaging and enduring.

    Another comment.
Pitch correction is to music what photoshop is to photography. But it is much deeper than that. And continues to get deeper. And, oddly enough, it is all based on mathematics. Computer computation to be exact. I’m an old guy born in 1950. I grew up listening to 45rpm records of good old rock and roll. I went to school and learned drafting as a trade and spent many years honing that craft. I also took some photography courses in college and spent a lot of time taking pictures and processing them in the darkroom. At the end of my career, all the drafting was done by computer. Drawing are all extracted from a 3D model. There are no more “draftsmen”. Pictures are digital and can be manipulated. You don’t need to actually be a good photographer. Music is digitally created or manipulated. You don’t need to be a good musician or vocalist. AI is to a point where a complete person can be generated to appear real in a movie. In the work of music and entertainment and visual art, is anything real anymore?

As an old (and lousy) piano player, these snake oil salesmen have been around for ever in one form or another with their "how to play the piano without having to learn to play or do any work" courses . For people who are suckered into buying these courses there are two results: first, they'll try it once or twice and then quit because they find they're really not learning anything, or they'll try the lessons and they'll be so quickly unsatisfied with the results because they want to learn to really play and they know they're not learning, and they'll go on to something where they really learn--which means they'll have to do the work.
There's no easy way to learn, especially an instrument like the piano. You either want to learn to play or you don't and if you really want to learn you're going to eventually have to do all the hard & rote stuff, like learning theory and scales and keys and all the rest. You're eventually going to want to learn to play songs that don't repeat the same 4 cords, and then you're going to have to start all over again because what you learn in a course like this is useless.

    • @glamgal7106

Amen to what you said about there's no easy way to learn. Having taken piano lessons and various music courses in college, I was really turned off by the advert. Assumptions make an ass out of yourself. I’m taking this coarse. I’ve been a musician for 53 years. And have had a hard time getting thru all the intros as it’s all just refresher for me. But once the actual lesson started , I found it’s a very comprehensive coarse. You still have to learn theory , scales, notes, and key signature. And how to read music in both clefs . Also still requires just as much practice. He does have a different approach that makes the learning much easier to understand . He teaches all the traditional terminology ,and then breaks it down into layman terms. That’s the biggest difference. He makes it understandable. Although that damn accent can get annoying. 😂

Having actually experimented with autotune and pitch correction software, I found that it sounds progressively unnatural the more aggressively it's applied. With manual pitch correction software such as Melodyne, I suspect many flatten out the natural modulation. When I tried that on my own vocals, it sounded dull and nasal. They also tend to remove the natural slide between one note and another, and after doing all of that, it sounded just like the vocals on many a modern commercial recording, ie. awful.

There ARE a lot of famous and popular songs you could play with just these four chords (for that matter, there are a lot of songs you could play with just three of them). There we go...I fixed it for him.👍
Yeah, this was bad. What I don't understand is that he's a concert pianist, so I'm assuming that he loves playing the piano...the whole piano, using, you know, all the keys...and doesn't spend 2 hours entertaining an audience with this crap. So why teach a course like this, that dumbs down what he does? Why not teach a course that really teaches people to play the piano? It will certainly take longer than it would to learn 4 chords, but isn't it worth the time? As you said, you spent every day for 2 years training your voice...if a thing is worth doing/learning, then it's worth doing right, and it''s worth it to put in the time and the effort needed.
Enough of this. I'm off now to teach myself how to play 100 songs on the piano, and I've only got a week!!🤣🤣

You can learn the four chords in 15 minutes. Then it's "Now what?" You're going to get pretty bored of those 4 chords and 100 songs that sound all the same and you're either going to quit or you're going to have to go to a different course. And by the way, you don't have to pay to learn the four chords. Just type "4 chords hundreds of songs" into UA-cam and a hundred videos will come up and show you the same thing for free.

    A lot of songs today are built around 1, 6, 4 and 5/dom7 or 1, 3, 4 and 5/dom7....etc

My Mom used to sell pianos and organs back in the 60s and 70s. The organs were the hot sellers, with the cheesy rhythm accompaniment buttons on the left panel being the main selling point. Most non-musicians are intimidated by what they consider the "magic" that is music. The idea that they can press one key with their left hand, and then one key with their right hand, and have it come out like a semblance of a song is unimaginably attractive for people. It's the sonic equivalent of "Paint by numbers". This guy in the ad seems to be mining that same shaft, as he makes music seem inclusive and simple for the non-musician.
On the flip side, I have had the experience of showing non-musicians that their "Genius" artist is actually doing very simple things. This never goes over well, as they prefer to think of their favorite artists as untouchable Gods. Personally - and being self-taught - I find that discovery is one of the biggest joys about any subject. Every time I learn something new on the piano or guitar I feel like I'm 5 years old on Christmas morning again. I've been opening presents every day for 50 years!

Hi Fil: I've seen this advert before. Having taken formal piano lessons and many music courses in college such as ear training and improvisation, I found the "Learn the same 4 chords and play many songs" advert to be questionable and suspicious. Yes, there are 4 chord and even 3 chord songs that arguably aren't difficult to learn. As you mentioned, it's a matter of putting in the time to practice and learn. I hope you don't mind me mentioning this: A good example of a 4 chord pattern would be I VIm IV V which was popular in 1950s rock n' roll. I loved the excellent points that you brought up in how the advert was presented--kind of like a Swiss cheese with too many holes in it. I agree infinite percent that people get suspicious, especially as you pointed out in the "Under the Bridge" example where there's a chord change and 4 chords don't suffice. Personally, I wonder if Stephen Ridley isn't putting his reputation at risk by this "come on" of an advert. Thanks for bringing this to light, Fil!

Your thoughts on pitch correction remind me of a thought a friend of mine passed on to me about 35 yrs ago. He was a guitar player in a small band, and a fairly good one at that. But he could not sing. He knew it and literally kept his mouth shut. He also told me about recording studios, and how, at that time, the music was manipulated, he believed then, as I do now, that live is the only time one really gets to hear a person sing or play an instrument. I would rather listen to a medium talented performer or, for that matter any performer, any day over a electronically corrected version of their music.

Lemmy was only joking when he said, "We only know four chords, but we arrange them pretty well." Blues musicians use nearly all the same chord sequences, and The Inkspots started EVERY song with the same guitar intro, but those people STILL managed to sound original and interesting song to song. The simple answer is, STOP LISTENING TO THE POP CHARTS. There's plenty of great music by less popular and independent artists, better than any "hits" of today.

Pete Townshend, for one, might have been pleased with the current technology, when he had to record Oliver Reed’s vocals for the movie version of Tommy’s Uncle Ernie: “I did two or three weeks in the studio with Ollie, who was great fun to work with, but couldn’t sing a note. We had to do it line by line and sometimes word by word, and I’m not exaggerating. The weird thing is that once he’d done it by bits, he could do it live.”

In addition to the social companionship, you get real, uncorrected voices - can't really get anything else!
Are the people who sing with friends as good as professional singers? No, but most people who attend are better than you might think. People who can't sing don't attend. [Except me ... I'm in my "learning to sing pitches accurately" phase. I can usually manage a harmony, so I don't lead. ]

My cost is $99 a month. Now all that said. It’s a bit slow starting ,as he really goes in depth on the basics. But once you get started it moves pretty fast. I highly recommend it if your interested in learning piano/keyboard.
As a guitarist for 53 years , there are many songs that use the same chords. Heck just look at the blues.

Thank you, I never heard the pitch corrected singing, because I always close the ad before it, this is funny indeed.
Thanks Steven but no, I learn to play piano, I like a lot the major 7 chords, there is no way I would like to limit myself to 4 chords, singing over and over the first 4 measure of every possible song.
Oh, and as an amateur singer too, learning to sing since 1999, I don't see the point in using pitch correction just to go faster. The fun thing in music is not only the result, but also the process, and enjoying it. I'm happy to hear that my voice is still getting better after all these years and I enjoy the fact that there is no end to it. I expect the same with the piano. Where is the joy of learning, if you can have everything, right away, without any effort, but through the use of softwares? It won't be " your progress".
Same with languages. Yep, you can give the illusion of knowing almost perfectly a language, using a limited set of "most used" vocabulary and sentences, that you've learned to say with the most correct accent possible. But you won't be able to really understand people anymore, as soon as they will start to use the REAL daily language at normal speed.
Yep I confirm, this was RHCP "Under the Bridge", and the chords change a bit later is exactly what makes this song special.

I was suckered by the "you only need four chords" claim. There's also 12 keys, so there's combinations of different hand positions (on piano). You'll also be modifying chords with sus, 7ths and 9ths etc. Then you have inversions and secondary dominants and other borrowed chords. Not to mention jumping across the keyboard in time with the music and playing different rhythms with each hand.
and so on and so on.

One example that comes to mind it Ed Sheeran, he has done this during a few performances, and uses the exact same key to play parts of songs. There really isn't anything that incredible about it, as it's something that can be done pretty easily. And as for the pitch correcting, it has an attraction because it gives it a "pop" sound and makes it seem more commercialized. I prefer raw, authentic talent. Great videos and explanations though, man! I appreciate what you do. 🙏

I’m a guitar and ukulele novice but to play most songs you need to know a lot of chords. An exception would be Knocking on Heaven’s Door G D Am7 C. Tom Dooley can be played with D and A7. These are good for beginners. I get my chords from a chord app Tabs. They have versions of the chords and you have to experiment with what sounds best. Most songs need a lot of chords. You have to find your own level. I find that the Ukulele chords are much easier to learn. You can play a lot of chords and many songs. The autoharp is also a good alternative. Mine has 19 chord buttons that are available. The challenge is to work on learning which finger should be used for a given button. Also you use picks on each finger to do the strumming. That take some practice. There’s lots of introductory books which helps you along. My autoharp has 36 strings that make for a rich sound.
Fil, John Sebastian of The Lovin Spoonful uses an autoharp to play Do You Believe in Magic. That would make for a good analysis. There’s a live version on UA-cam.

Randy Jackson to singer Haley Reinhart six years after she appeared on American Idol:
"You are one of the ones that I really thought would have a career because doing that stuff you do with the jazz stuff is not easy. It's hard to do, and you sing it with more melody than a lot of the songs on the radio today. Some of them I love, but they're like four chords. So with four chords your melody is always going to be limited. With the jazz stuff, it's about singing through multiple chord changes. It's a very different thing, so your ear has to be trained so accutely, and then you also love the rock side..."
