  • What happened to Spellbreak?
For a new game to stand out in the battle royale market, game developers needed to take the genre in new directions that hadn’t been explored yet.
Eventually, one indie game company saw how fun and exciting the battle royale genre could be and thought “Could we do a cool, interesting fantasy version of that and make it into something awesome?” Rather than using guns, this team thought that magic was the way forward, and looked to go toe to toe with the giants of the battle royale genre.
This is the rise and fall of Spellbreak.

It's a shame that this game didn't take off because it was fun and unique. Also would have been cool to see another game company to make it big and drive innovation into other games based on their ideas of BR. The fact that you could combine your powers was so good! Also the fact that you can combo abilities with other players gave a big twist on team play synergy. I mean slowing the enemies with ice, then rock slam them for high damage and then set them on fire for the DOT would be almost an instakill

I remember that in closed beta the devs opened a discord call so people could ask them about the game, i was one of those people and asked them if they planned on adding new elements to the game later on or in the full version, they simply answered "no, not for now". Not adding new gauntlets was part of the plan from the beggining apparently, and that was their mistake

I can't understand the mindset of these small devs. There are countless example of indie game that grow big cause they keep adding contents despite the initial launch wasn't that huge. Yet, these guys are here refusing to do that exact same thing, lol

Controller aim assist got to the point where it was a soft aimbot. I've seen several videos of players not even touching the controller and the targeting reticle still moved and tracked players. It was particularly bad to the point where Lightning gauntlets were the meta because the hitscan worked too well with the aim assist. It actually forced Proletariat to turn the aim assist way down but by then it was too late. A lot of players quit because the devs dragged their feet on nerfing controller aim assist.

This and Apex are the only BR games I've gotten into. The jumping and levitation made movement feel great, but the way that some gauntlets were better against ground or airborne targets provided a ton of tactical choice. Plus the slower projectile speed on most spells made reading a target's movement fun. All of it made combat feel like a battle of wits and not just who can jump who with a headshot.

I feel like, if an open-minded dev team started with the loose goal of attempting to imagine “a MOBA, but as a free-for-all instead of team versus,” and then just prototyped and iterated a lot to see where the fun is, this is definitely one of the stronger possible design paths that their base idea could lead them down.

Even if it's better than the competition, people will stick to what's popular and known. 1v1 games can stay alive decades after being dropped because you just need one other person to play, but when you need 6, 12, 36, etc. players for a match...

Honestly, my favorite part of the game was the side mode, Clash, they had for a while. The game had a lot of expression with the various powers and gauntlets which led to experimentation as well as needing time to learn the depths of the combat. However, dying and being booted back to the menu made this a chore that many didn't want to go through, myself included. Clash was a team deathmatch mode that allowed players to make mistakes and not feel as punished for still learning the game. I still remember rounds where I went HAM with the stoneborn class and chrono rune to deal loads of damage while still packing stupid amounts of survivability. I could often get 20+ kills with that build. I don't know if pivoting away from BR would've saved the game, there seemed to be a lot of pessimism in the community towards the devs for wasting the game's potential and they were cynical about the game's lifespan. Regardless, it was the one BR I enjoyed, even if it wasn't for the BR parts. Rest in peace, Spellbreak. You will be missed.

    • @Inusitus
      @Inusitus 2 роки тому +3

Clash is what made me keep playing but when they replaced it with dominion, I didn't have as much interest. It was a mode I could sit back and casually play without worrying about dying or capturing an objective. Was disappointed to see it go.

As a 2,000+ hour veteran since the pre-alpha days of this game...it was amazing. At its' peak it was extremely fast-paced, great movement, and a ton of fun in the smallish community that knew each other. The downfall was almost entirely due to the team running the game. It felt as if instead of building upon your loyal, dedicated playerbase...the team thought there was room for such an offbeat, projectile + movement type game to succeed at a widespread level. The game at its' core never would've survived being a AAA title if the spirit of the game were to stay as it should've but I believe the team falsely believed they could oversimplify the game and water it down to appeal to the masses.
The team should've implemented ranked much sooner and in a much better format, preferably in some sort of solos or trios arena TDM.
Reason: This game at its' peak (pre-alpha/early alpha) was quite fast and intense. This made skill gaps between players apparent and imo not fun when a fight was very one-sided. However, spellbreak was one of the most exciting games to have an intense, drawn out skillshot/movement fight with someone of roughly equal skill. Those were the moments that were amazing. DM'ing the person because everyone sort of knew each other afterwards and lol'ing at the moments.

It will be like nature or plant rune, and for the basic attack it could be a rope made out of plants, flowres, leavs and roots. It would be mid range weapon and you would hold it in your hand. It would deal a little less damage than stonesharper. For the main ability it could summon a wall made out of roots and it would block attack but it lasts only 5-10 seconds. I personaly think idea is pretty good since players wanted a new rune.

This game was super cool. I didn't start playing until several months after launch but I thought it was very interesting. It was so fun just going into the practice mode and seeing what you could do with different combinations. I've never been huge into BR games but I thought Spellbreak would be the one that finally got me into the genre. Unfortunately all of my friends were completely over BR games and playing solo is only fun for so long. Hope we get something cool like this again.
Also, I would love a video on Population One! Population One was actually the first BR game that got me really into the genre

should do a video on Islands of Nyne, had a big release and was suppose to be "the first balanced competitive battle royale" it had one tournament then just dwindled off because of the lack of dev support. That game had some potential and had shroud and other big streamers playing it.

I got into the closed beta for Spellbreak, and I think it was actually a lot of fun, though it did get quite repetitive. I still remember that early in the game's lifespan we actually used to NOT get a starting gauntlet and instead we had to look for the gauntlet for our class lol

The game was amazing, but instead of creating more interesting and immersive passive talents they opted to nerf and remove some of the options. They also changed a few of them around for better and for worse.
There was also that gamemode that was basically a complete game mode that they removed as well. It was like a 20 v 20 arena, team deathmatch type mode and along with the passives you obtain from reading scrolls, it was really fun. You could do glass cannon builds or my favorite was a scavenger and recovery build with stone and stay alive forever. Especially since Scavenger (or whatever it was called that replenished hp and armor on kills) would heal massive chunks during a fight and recovery was still working past the restoration and just really kept me alive.
There were better options for the actual battle royale because there wasn't that many times i'd be fighting against 5 people at the same time... All focused on me.
The new take on a battle royale without it being a new take on a shooter was perfect. Instead of adding to different Talents to utilize they decided to nerf and remove and swap them around and split them up. Some of it you could tell was filler, others you could tell was a frustration response, but they could have also increased the potency of other talents or reduced their cost.
As a lot of the problem why there wasn't a lot of diversity between builds there weren't many better options especially concerning the cost of a lot of them.
My friend would use Thirsty so that he could quickly consume the items that replenished a lot more HP and Armor, and it would share 50% of that with me. While I would run recovery but i'd normally use the Stone class and be the front line. We would also coordinate and ensure he would have all the large consumables and i'd take the smaller ones. Easy for me to use and stay in the fight, while it took him about the same amount of time, but for a bigger return for himself and the AOE would keep me alive as well.
Once we came back and everything was changed and shifted around there wasn't much left to desire outside of the new Relics. The Relics kept things interesting but with the changes to the Talents along with the removal of the Team Deathmatch game mode and that new one that was complete trash the game fell off for us. We still dominated a lot of the lobbies, but with the enemies hitting not as hard (because they removed the DMG Talent from Mind and nerfed the other one from Spirit) Along with the removal of Recovery there wasn't as much crazy fights going on.
Sure there were some interesting moments, but him watching as i'm fighting 3 people as he pops some potions then comes back swinging in full force as our HP bars just keep jumping from almost dead to almost full over and over.
They removed the Adrenaline rush. They removed the wow factor. The dulled the game down and didn't add anything to replace it.
No new Elements. No new crazy reactions. Why can't I slap people around with Water. Let me drown a fool. Something.
Despite all that the skins in the game are amazing.

Never heard of this game and online-only games aren't my type but it looks lovely visually and the twist of a Fantasy focus is a simple but effective one.
It always surprises me the dedication to play consistently and expectation for how regular updates are people have with these kinds of games. For games that get updated over time, I'm used to returning to it after months of silence to try it out... though I suppose I'm neither competitive or a single game focused content creator.

A topic that this video didn't touch at all was the fact that during the prerelease they switched from Steam to Epic Games due to an exclusivity deal, which meant lower discoverability and them competing against Fortnite on the latter's home field. That must have taken some impulse off their initial release

Played this game in beta and again on release. The idea is sound and it looks really fun in motion, but once you realize you only get 2 elemental gauntlets at a time, you understand how limited your combinations become. All of the gauntlet combinations have a couple cool movement or combat options, but you can't chain any of them together dynamically because you're stuck to just the particular combination you have at the time. I think even just allowing 1 more gauntlet in use would greatly add to the dynamism of battles and keep you on your toes, as opposed to now where it just feels like shooting in any other BR with a couple of special skills, giving it a bit of an overwatch feel.
