Each video opens my eyes to what I should be looking for so thanks for that. Here in the UK in June it's only dark for a couple of hours so hungrily waiting for August
Great video Richard as always. Do you ever use the expose to the right technique? I'd love to see a video tutorial from you based on that as you simplify everything in your video's
Thanks so much for watching Tony. In a nutshell, exposing to the right is referring to the histogram and trying to squeeze as much light into the image as you can without clipping highlights. Obviously when shooting nightscapes it's really difficult to get the histogram anywhere near the right hand side .. .so, no I don't worry about the technique. I use shutter speeds, aperture and iso that I know from experience work to get a good exposure and to be honest they don't change all that much from one shoot to the next. Also, different cameras need more exposure in camera than others depending on whether they have iso invariant sensors. Canon don't have those sensors so they are better to be exposed more correctly in camera whereas Sony and Nikon do have iso invariant sensors so they can be somewhat under-exposed and all you need do is lift the exposure in Lightroom or Photoshop and the resulting image is the same anyway. Hope that's helpful.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks for your detailed explanation. Your images are fantastic and truly are inspiring. Im relatively new to nightscape photography. Great video, Richard, as always. It was kicked off by some amazing and stunning drone footage of the beautiful countryside. The images are superb, as they are always. I notice that you're often including a single "ambient" long exposure as part of your capture workflow. When you come to blend the collection of images, does ambient exposure behave in the same way as the light painted ones, ie using Lighten mode will reveal the ambient exposure in areas that otherwise would be pitch dark? I have a feeling this is a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask!! :-) Thanks for another great video, with inspirational content. Looking forward to this next adventure you mentioned. All the very best.
Thanks as always for watching Simon . .there are no stupid questions. I don't have to use the Lighten blend mode on a single shot as you need more than one image for it to do anything.
