Shooting Nightscapes In Cloud

- In todays video we take a look at how I like to shoot nightscape images when it's cloudy. Not all clouds are created equal and when mixed with various lighting, many forms of cloud cover can be quite magical.

Very good video Richard, great advice especially for someone who lives in the west of Ireland !
Thanks heaps for watching Mick, really appreciate it.
Well worth the effort you put in ,good start to Sunday working on the buses, thank you
Thanks a lot Phillip, hope the buses keep on time mate.
Thanks Richard, your videos are so informative, I look forward every week to the next installment
I really appreciate you watching Kim, thanks so much.
That's so true. Even when things don't work out, it's still always nice to be out there. Even western science now knows, we and all things come from the dust of stars. This interconnects us all. We should never forget this.
Very true indeed , thanks so much for watching.
Great video Richard, love that old shot of the church and fog, magic.
Thanks a lot my friend, really appreciated.
Love the way you find the silver lining in nearly every cloud
I think it's the best way to go Doug, thanks heaps for watching.
G'day Richard. Up to your usual standard mate. Thanks.
Thanks once again for watching John
@@nightscapeimages.richard Always a pleasure mate :).
Thanks again Richard for another great video
I really appreciate you watching Dave.
Another very informative video Richard - Thankyou.
You're very welcome Tony, thanks for watching.
Thank you again Richard. I've been waiting for the clear nights again but Now I'll be out tonight even though there's cloud
Thanks a lot Rick, there is often a good opportunity even with some cloud cover. Appreciate you watching.
Epic timelapse!! Looks like the clouds arent always bad. Thanks for the video about it.
My pleasure Luis. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for all your effort. I truly love your art.
I really appreciate you watching.
you all prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Eric Scott Instablaster :)
@Austin Lane I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Austin Lane it worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out !
Richard love the videos did you ever do a timelapse processing video ?
I've done quite a few videos about time lapses but I don't think I've ever done a processing video for time lapse. Maybe sometime soon.
Thank you Richard. I love the type of your photos and the way you bring us your tips.
Greetings from Germany
I'm pleased you like it Holger, thanks so much.
Very Interesting video Richard. Looking forward to your talk at my club tomorrow night, not in person but the next best thing.
Hey Gary, I'm looking forward to it.
Great ideas for salvaging a shoot. Don’t leave before the magic happens.
Thanks a lot for watching my friend.
Great episode; I love clouds with stars and you really delineated the varieties and advantages (or disadvantages) with, as always, gorgeous examples.
Thanks so much, really appreciated.
Some of my favorite shots have some clouds in them. Your video is a level up though on what to look for and consider when you know you’re going to have clouds. Thank you 🙏.
Really appreciate your comments David, thanks for watching.
Great video Richard.
Thanks so much for watching.
Absolutely Beautiful time elapse intro please make it a habit :))))) thank you and always take care of yourself
I'll do my best. Thanks so much for watching.
Just in time am having my cuppa 👍👍👍
Thanks Brian, I hope you enjoy it.
Wow yet again that intro alone is just amazing 👏
Really appreciate you watching.
As a beginner I always lightpainted foreground standing behind the camera. Now i understand how to lightpaint
U r truly an inspiration💯
Thanks very much for watching, really appreciate that.
Thanks again. Great info lots to think about. Especially what you can add extra to the image. Fog, pollution etc.
Thanks for watching Dew Drop .. really appreciated.
Great video and advice. I recently drove to a town on my coast about two hours before sunrise. I see lots of clouds along the way; spend the time under night skies and you'll learn how to see the clouds. Once I arrived at the coast I saw just a light sliver on the horizon; turned around headed back into the town to take a few street lights and scenes images in B&W. Noticed the sky about an hour before sunrise and I can just see light areas and clouds. Back to the coast and what a fabulous sunrise when the sun snuck under the clouds. Richard mentioned and I agree, keep your options open and improvise.
Really appreciate your insights Richard, thanks for watching.
Thank you, great video as always.
Thanks as always Sharyn.
Great subject matter, well addressed. Thanks Richard, job well done.
Thanks so much Steve, really appreciate your comments.
I am doing some startrails photos under an almost full moon and watching some of your videos. I’m really near of a perfect night. Thanks for your job.
Fantastic, thanks so much for watching again.
Hi Richard, Thank you for another great instructional video. I will be "at the farm" from tomorrow afternoon. I am really looking forward to putting into practice all of your great teaching (that I can remember).
Thanks again for watching David.
Great video . That tree stomp you where standing by would look fantastic light up I need to see that happen. The twist and grain of the wood.
Thanks a lot Jeff. Yes I might have to get back to that stump ..!!!
Thanks for a great video, great tips as always. You are absolutely right about getting that one shot that makes all the difference. Thanks once again and keep safe!!!!
Many thanks indeed my friend.
Awesome video mate very interesting and some amazing photos
Thanks heaps as always Brad.
amazing work .. 🙏🏻
Thank you so much
Cheers Richard 👌
Thanks my friend.
Very well illustrated the effect that different clouds will bring to the images. True, many nights we are guessing if is worth it to go out and drive to a location because there are some clouds during the day and we don't really know how is going to evolve. But then if I select my favorite milky way images, most of them involve some clouds lit form below from a distant town.
Great point! Thanks for the video.
Thanks very much for your valued insights Roberto, appreciate you watching.
Great video as always and inspiring. Would you mind sharing how you expose some of these shots without blowing out your lights? Are you doing multiple exposures to light foreground and then sky? I've said it before but you're work is amazing. Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much Paul. When I shoot multiple images and blend the foregrounds I change the exposure settings of the camera. If I capture myself in the shot while lighting I'll simply rub it out in photoshop. So the lights don't blow out because I've lowered aperture and iso mainly for that part.
Good tips Richard. Top notch as always. I guess I need to get my order in for your yearly calendar 📅
Yes I've got them ready to go now Spence. See here: www.nightscapeimages.com.au/2021-calendars.html
Hello Richard!! Your persistence to get images when the weather is not the best is what makes very interesting to watch and learn from!!! I appreciate how you mentioned about the people that have to deal with a lot of light pollution , clouds turn into giant mercury lights. 😕 Really enjoyed the timelapeses at the beginning and the views from the drone!! Take care looking forward to your next video !!!
Thanks so much for your very encouraging comments Gary. Always appreciate you watching.
Great time lapses in the opening and the panoramas at 10:09 and 10:20 are fantastic. The Clear Outside app that you've featured before must be a great tool to anticipate when you'll get the high thin clouds that can really add drama without getting in the way of the stars.
Thanks very much Bob, yes the Clear Outside app is a great tool to help with planning and preparation that's for sure.
Spectacular images Richard, I really like the extra mood that the clouds add into the images, coupled with your creative ability really makes for some unique feast for the eyes. Thanks for creating another informative and well delivered video.
Thanks a lot Three-phase, always appreciate your comments.
Another great nugget of information. I'm still going through the other videos and digesting the plethora of information. I kept eying that fallen tree in this video, thinking that it would make such a nice foreground image for a nightscape. Great info on the cloud levels and how they can impact the shot. Also found the information about your experience with lighting in the fog very useful. Tried a little light painting on the tree in our backyard last night with the moon lighting as well. Still a work in progress and I'm off to review your light painting video now. Great work and thanks.
Thank you very much Rob, really appreciate you watching.
Great video, Richard, as always. I'll now keep a closer eye on my Clear Outside app, and if's high level cloud forecast, I'll be out there!! Thanks again for great content!!
Really appreciate that as always Simon
Thankyou for that Richard...food for thought definately..I must admit if there's cloud, which we get plenty of here I tend to not shoot, but I will think again now..Thanks
Thanks for having a look Martin, really appreciate that.
Briilliant. I will start to see clouds in a positive way ;-)
I think that's the right way to approach it Matthias, thanks again for watching.
Thanks Richard for a very informative video and images as usual ,ill be out soon as soon as the full moon has gone and its getting dark much earlier now ,so once again Richard fantastic video and images and all the best Phill
Thanks as always Phill, really appreciate your comments.
This was great to watch Richard. So many times clouds do tend to get in my way of astro, but you're approach is really helpful. All great tips and thanks for sharing mate. Hope you're safe and well.
Thanks heaps Adrian, yes we are going ok down here. We're a fair way from Melbourne where all the trouble has been.
Surprises, yes I had these too. Some turned out to be bad but other.. OMG. For example, I finished my shootings for the night and was walking to my car in pith black darkness with my headlamp on. But suddenly the whole scenery got brighter as if someone had switched on the light. It was the moon rising. I decided to go back to the spot and took the best images of this night with the moon in the frame, just above the horizon, lighting the subject matter absolutely magnificently!
Fantastic, thanks heaps for watching.
Thank you for this boss! I just went into astrophotography last month and I have been learning amazing techniques thru your channel. Cheers from the Philippines :)
Thanks a lot for watching Jason, I really appreciate you watching.
Great topic well discussed, i have one image that actually looks far better with cloud than without. Great vid 👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching Joseph, very much appreciate your comments.
I utterly love your videos m8. Gives me heeps of inspiration. Live in northern norway, so this shall be exiting. Just imagine what i can do with mountains and nightsky. Thank you for sharing☺️ i do wonder if you could make a vid on nightsky and city lights if possible(dont know if it is possible with all the light but) keep it up, stay safe👍☺️
Thanks very much for watching, I'm really pleased you liked the video.
Living in BC Canada where we have a lot of clouds I'll be taking your tips with this.
Thanks so much Lawrence .. I hope they clear for you soon.
I've only just started the vid but those intro timelapses!
Thanks a lot Mate.
Can't agree more😁😁😁
The intro was just 🔥. I was speechless. This should be showed in hospitals too so patients can see what it's like out there when they get out. Loved this video keep it up💪🏻💪🏻. Been there since the beginning!!! Keep it up!!
I'm so pleased you liked it Arhan, really appreciate that.
Awesome insight and shots as usual. Been camping recently and I had 1 opportunity to go out and shoot the stars, it was cloudy when I got there, but was forecast to clear. So I just went for it, when I got to the location, I got a few shots before it clouded over again, but I could see gaps, so I just waited it out, and between intermittent cloud cover managed to get a few fairly decent shots......not edited yet though, lol
Good on you Suzanne, I'm sure you'll get plenty more opportunities soon.
This is your best intro yet. Awesome time lapses. Looks like you missed rubbing yourself out by the shed, not sure if that was intentional or not but it actually looks kinda cool to see you light painting, being your videos are educational/instructional based. That's why I'm guessing you left it in intentionally. Very neat.
Thanks again. Yes that was me light painting the structure. Glad you liked it.
Richard, I’ve watched and rewatched just about all of your videos. I ALWAYS pick up some nugget of knowledge that I can incorporate into my night shooting, thank you. Now for the rant. Lately it seems as though there are two, sometimes three interruptions in the course of your vids, can you have UA-cam stop those ads ?
Thanks so much for watching the channel Gary. Yes the ads have gone crazy ... I also hate the one's in the middle.
NICE RICHARD
Thanks for watching Pablo
Hi Richard,
great topic and good insights.
Double thumbs up, ....if I could :-P
I had some pictures done with the mentioned high clouds and "sequatored" the final image.
This leads to more blurry clouds. I personally like that look.
As far as I understood, you don`t like the blurry look of the clouds.
So you would mostly go without sequator to have more defined clouds?
Greetings Steffen
Hi Steffen, I have used Sequator on many of these images and a little cloud blur in unavoidable. I could shorten the shutter speed which may help.
Hi Richard
Really enjoy watching your videos. They are plain and simple to follow.
What lense warmer do you use to stop them from fogging.
Thank you so much for watching Gilbert. Have a look at this lens warmer. www.amazon.com.au/PROTAGE-Condensation-Prevention-Evening-Remover/dp/B073X18JND/ref=asc_df_B073X18JND/?tag=googleshopdsk-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341792355995&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2507798421338197978&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9071496&hvtargid=pla-587434840797&psc=1
Great video as always, I'm planning on shooting later this month if covid doesn't spoil it again. I love my photography but thanks to you I've been inspired by your photography & your information videos to get out & shoot the night sky. I recently brought a coowoo lense warmer & power pack like yours, could I ask what mode do you use the most low, medium or high?
I have family in the city of Melbourne & in boronia area, please stay safe.
Thanks a lot for watching. My lens warmers don't have temperature control . .they are always on . .probably high.
So when you are doing night shots like the one with the truck, what do you focus on? The truck looked spot on but if you focus on it, would the stars not fade out completly?
Thanks so much for watching. Sometimes everything is at infinity focus but if the foreground is close, like the truck image I'll re-focus on the truck and shoot multiple exposures and focus stack and blend. Actually next weeks video will be about that exact image with the truck and I'll go through the whole editing process as well.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Sounds good, I'll be watching for that video. I don't have premier or lightroom to edit with. I just use the free Gimp app. Hopefully I can get a better understanding of how you edit and can incorporate that in to Gimp. Thank you!
I've faced one of these issues with the clouds tonight (i was trying to take some star trails, which i've learned from you.) It would've been perfect because of the full moon(i can bump down the ISO and light painting isn't really needed). Fortunately i got some cool shots of the milky way before the moon/clouds appeared. I've been learning a lot from your content. Subscribed!
Thanks a lot for watching. Yes star trails don't usually work too well with clouds as the trails become broken ..Thanks for your support.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Thank you for replying. I went out again tonight. The skies were clear but one issue that i've experienced(i noticed it too late) was the fact that my lens fogged up. How do you usually prevent your lens from fogging up? (it's getting colder where i'm at and i fear that it's something that i'll constantly experience.
@@cjc023 I use lens warmers .. something like this: www.amazon.com.au/PROTAGE-Condensation-Prevention-Evening-Remover/dp/B073X18JND/ref=asc_df_B073X18JND/?tag=googleshopdsk-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341792355995&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1053845884221983533&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9071496&hvtargid=pla-587434840797&psc=1

"bortle 2 to 3, that's not too bad."
- Me crying out loud, living in a Bortle 8 area.
Yes it's very good to shoot nightscapes around here.
