You should do an nmap cve scan against it and see what comes up.
Nessus essentials could also do the same thing.
The main issues with this unit are:
1) To take advantage of the faster Thunderbolt connection you must have it on your desk next to you, and the unit is very noisy. I also believe that NVMe thermals may be an issue in the long run.
2) This unit can store only your active working projects, due to the nvme size restrictions, so you also need to have another NAS unit with HDDs for cold storage.
3) To populate the unit with 5 x 4TB drives you are looking at a total cost of 3500-4000 quid and this covers only your active projects storage needs. A more traditional NAS over 10Gbe will have only marginally lower read-write speeds but will give you much more storage.
With that said NVMe NASs will get more interesting as NVMe storage capacity increases and cost decreases.
Solid points and I agree, but:
1. That's why it's got the 10Gbe if you want to be far away
2. This is definitely not meant for large archival storage, more active projects for 2+ people and portability aspect. Not many NAS options can offer that
3. Well... if you want a cheap 10Gbe NAS there are options out there, but the point is you get fast random read/write speeds what this flash NAS provides, having 2-3 people working on a HDD NAS with 10Gbe is an option, but way below the performance of this one here. :)
@@theTechNotice For sure. What I meant to say with my comment is that while this appears to be the fastest possible network editing solution in the market, it has some drawbacks (price, noise, capacity) that kind of defeat the purpose of getting this one over a 3-tiered (NVMe+SSD+HDD) NAS system from QNAP or Synology if you are going to work over 10GBe, because you are going to saturate the 10GBe connection anyway.
But the future is exciting!
Thunderbolt is useless on this nas. Its use P2P Ethernet over TB. And the M2 has only pcie 3x2 Connection. So u Never got 40gbit
You are confusing M.2 with NVME in general. It would cost an arm and a leg but you can get substantially larger E1.S drives than you can M.2. The real killer in my eyes is the pcie 3x2 limitation, but given it's only 10gbe it's not that big a deal.
The main issue is you cannot get an i5 because they are sold out nationwide, and it makes zero sense to buy the way lesser i3 for $300 less. The few i5s that arrive to resellers are reserved for customers who order them packed with expensive (and marked way up) E1.S drives which again makes zero sense for anyone to overpay for 7000Mbs drives for a unit where the channels are restricted to 2000Mbs. I could go on.

You can populate E1.S drives in that NAS which offers potential for enterprise NVME SSD's that have higher endurance, IO and larger capacity than M.2 which is it's biggest pro given some of the other limitations of the hardware. At the price and given the form factor it's completely unique in that regard, even someone like myself who would DIY a NAS couldn't easily build a unit that uses E1.S drives, especially given it's not hard to overheat M.2 drives on a NAS if the drives don't get good cooling.

Well, building your own will be cheaper and better but not portable and could cause headaches if you don't know what you're doing. So if you know what you're doing I'd say always go the DIY route, coz you can make it for your workflow and it will be better :)

Great to see this video - this NAS is one I have genuinely been thinking about upgrading to one day - mostly for the quieter operation, so I'd be interested to hear how it compoares to a box full of spinning drives? I just need the price of 8TB NVMe drives to fall a bit more... Looks like the 10GbE is actually good in actual usage too. The in-built 10GbE of my Synology box is actually unusable due to overheating (I note they don't include it in the latest version!) so I have an expansion card.
This one is noisier than what you might think because of the two noisy fans that need to cool down the NVMEs.
I use the 10 Gbe connection on a Synology DS1820+ populated with both spinning disks, SSDs and NVMEs without any issue whatsoever. It is also quite silent.
I've got some updates on the noise, stay tuned! :)

My prefered solution -
Proxmox with Docker compose running something like NextCloud/OwnCloud/FreeNAS/TurnKey app on a quadcore i3/r3 with 8G ram and a mobo with 4-8 sata ports.
My main issue with almost every NAS is this - how easy is it to get your data if the unit dies/bricks...
What's that ? Oh, the manufacturer has proprietary encryption on the disk.... Also the decryption chip is on the NAS... Oops :P

Off-site backup is accomplished securely using TaleScale/WireGuard/zeroTier/CloudFlare.
how many of what speed lanes do they wire up to each one of those m.2 ports though? lots of nas products only give you 1 pcie3 lane per m.2 drive and only give you 4-5 m.2 slots. I would have also liked to see at least 2 10gb sfp+ ports (10g-base-t isn't really used for much anymore on modern switches because it takes lots of power). The biggest problem with these flash nas products though is the lack of pcie lanes coming from the cpu/soc's that companies are choosing for these products. for example intel n100 based products are reasonably popular because they are reasonably fast for the job and very low power, BUT they only have *9* *gen3* pcie lanes. which is just ridiculous. (each m.2 drive should have 4 pcie4 or pcie5 lanes attached to them, same with 10g network ports). intel's current desktop line only has 24 pcie lanes which still isn't enough. (typically 16 of those are going to a gpu which means you only have 8 leftover for onboard devices and m.2 drives which again take 4 lanes each.) it would take something like a xeon embedded or epyc embedded cpu for a proper flash nas but then the power consumption goes up. for example the lowest end epyc embedeed 7000 series is the AMD EPYC Embedded 7232P which gives you 8 cores, 16 threads, at 120 watts, but you get 128 lanes of pcie gen4 which would be IDEAL for a flash nas. as you could dedicate 8 lanes for a notebook-style dgpu, and then you could integrate 2 100g nics (which cost 8 pcie lanes each) and that would leave room for 26 m.2/u.2/u.3 drives. which you could EASILY cram into a tiny box with adequate cooling and would not only make a fantastic storage server, but a homelab server as well to run proxmox and a whole host of virtual machines such as home assistant, host websites from home, *arr stack, bittorrent client, a router, whatever you want in a tiny package.
Just a heads up. I ordered one of these a few weeks back and the new firmware bricked the unit. QNAP support said the only way to resolve it was to send it in for an RMA. I simply returned it to amazon. Secondly, YOU MUST ADD M.2 heatsinks or else they WILL FAIL. I would NOT recommend this NAS for professional production work. It’s not reliable. The NMVes doesn't need heatsinks, I had that question and confirmed it with QNAP
What did you end up going with?
I ended up spending alot more money and getting a beast TVS H1688X. My other problem was that the storage tops out at 13-18tb in raid. The h1688x give me 132tb using raid 6 with double parity.
Someone else gave the exact same review of getting two of these units and both got bricked. I figure once they fix that issue this Nas will be supreme. I'm curious about the ugreen version though...

looks like a perfect device to carry on seminars where multiple people work with shared data, pair its 10Gbe port with nice high-performance WiFi7 Mesh system and files can fly,
I wonder, is Thunderbolt port host or guest - being able to connect a laptop, or connect let's say another storage or audio interface perhaps?
since it has HDMI port I assume it can be reinstalled with whatever system of choice, including Windows Server, Proxmox etc..?
So It's Ethernet over TB, so no docks, other accessories will work, only a HOST PC/MAC/Laptop would! :)

1. Fast WiFi7 is useless unless the other devices support it.
2. Traditional HDDs will be the speed bottleneck.
3. HDMI port does not automatically mean other OS's can be installed. Many Synology and Qnap units have Hdmi out, and no 3rd party OS can be installed.

Seen them, too soon to say it's the best... Hardware reliability is unproven, same with software/firmware support. Also, never guy gen1 of any tech. For all we know, there are hard coded backdoors in Ugreens units.

Good cheaper alternative, BUT no TB4 connection and only 1 10Gbe port as mentioned in the video.
You simply do not need a NAS for 2 people connecting. If the drive bay has 2 TB connections than you are done. You avoid all the hassle and cost.

@@theTechNotice Hey! Lovin you videos! What I am saying is that if the 4 or bay enclosure, and you dont need remote access, you don't need a NAS. Most creatives are not working in such shared manners. NAS all a sudden boosts the price up on sinple JBOD enclusores , which is really all that is needed most of the time. . For a 8Bay enclosure that used to be ESATA connections, all MFG need is to update to ThunderBolt, like the QNAP TL-D800C and for under $450 you have a rather fast connection(would be better if it was TB4). It would be nice to see you rate such units.
Also this QNAP is future proof with E1.S
After Qnaps security issues between 2020-2023, I would not touch them with a 10 foot pole.

ze superficial boy again misses the main point on a device, it natively is for "E1.S" form factor drives, which are enterprise grade and you can get them up to 61,44 TB each = possibility to have in that one device up to 300TB jbod capacity, the M.2 form factors there are optional using the toolfree reductions built in the brackets /to remove the reduction and mount the e1.s you will need a screw driver/, and the bottleneck is also underplayed, even those kc3000 drives each individually are capable of 7,000MB/s Read, 3,900MB/s Write, logically in a raid array it would be even more if they were internally connected to a motherboard /like asus hyper drive card connecting up to 4 m.2s onto one pcie 16x slot using bifurcation/ the device itself strangles the potential to a connection of a single low end nvme drive up to cca 1500MB/s, basically same as if you buy the fastest high end m.2 and connect it via a cheap usb-c external enclosure, the asus flashstor and the kickstarting qnaps with their m.2 drives are also handicapped that way, the whole thing is being killed by the price of the device /because of its limitations in throughput/ and mainly price of the drives, and with m.2 you are capped at 8TB capacity, from financial point if using desktop just buy an internal U.2 in 15/30 TB capacity for heavy work and backup onto an external hdd based nas, if using a laptop than serious ones have usually more than one m.2 storage position, max it out capacity wise, for digital nomad field work it is a pretty economical suicide
