  • Join the Amoeba Sisters on this introduction to the Integumentary System - which includes the skin! This video first introduces the important functions of this system as well as the skin. Then, this video takes a general tour through the epidermis (and each stratum of the epidermis), dermis, hypodermis, and accessory structures. Video also mentions several major cell types in the integumentary system and examples of when the integumentary system functions can be compromised.

Merkel cell function is still not well understood as we mention in the video! Here is an interesting read:
    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17412...
To learn more about the skin cancers mentioned here - as well as many others:
    www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-c...
Some things that are NOT consistent across all sources that we want to mention in our video notes - we find this interesting!
    (1) Regarding the hypodermis - we do want to mention that some sources call the hypodermis one of the major skin layers (epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis) AND some sources only recognize the epidermis and dermis as skin layers. In fact, you'll note the 2nd source in our factual references includes the hypodermis as a skin layer and the 3rd source in our factual references excludes it as a skin layer. This may be due to the distinguishing line between dermis and hypodermis not being completely clear-cut, and also, this is likely based on how technical one is defining the skin layers. Due to this, we simply mention the hypodermis as an integumentary system layer, include its importance to the system, and we leave this note here for our viewers.
    (2) Degree of burns. There are many sources that recognize 3 degrees, 4 degrees, more, or none as sometimes the terms are abandoned as a way to classify. A topic very interesting to explore, and it's a reason we mention that this is not the same across all sources. Our factual reference uses a 4 burn degree classification system as we do, which you can read about, but we recognize that there are more classifications out there.
Example of a 4 burn degree classification (discussed towards bottom of page):
    openstax.org/books/anatomy-an...
Example of a 3 burn degree classification from Stanford Medicine:
    stanfordhealthcare.org/medica...

Thank you for your videos! Being a visual learner, this helps your videos help so much! You make sure your viewer understands and not just memorize :) Also another cute fun mnemonic is "Come, Let's Get Sun-Burned" for the outer to inner Epidermis layers: Stratum Corneum, Lucidum, Granulosum, Spinosum, and Basale.

I love y’all’s channel!!! Thank you for doing it! I’m 41 going back to school because I always wish I would have gotten a degree so I’m going after a nursing degree like my Wife has and this channel has been sooooo helpful to me. I made an A in bio 103 and now I’m in human A&P 1. After bio 103 we had to fill out a teacher survey and one of the questions was what other methods of studying we used other than the ones we used in class and I said Amoeba Sisters on UA-cam all day everyday and twice on Sundays!!

You are awsome and I can't emphasize this enough. I am a Biology teacher from Brazil. I am making a effort to translate your amazing video to Portuguese. It is something a little hard, because I still improving my English skills (I apologize in advance for eventual mistakes I may committed in this message).
I would like to request, if is possible, of course, videos about plants physiology: transport of sap by xylem and phloem; plant hormones (especially auxins such as IAA); photoperiod and flowering.
I know all of these are very complex themes, but your videos are helping my students a lot.
    Thank you for all!
    yours sincerely,

Hold up, but are there times when scars that reach the dermis can completely heal to normal? And why is it that the fibroblasts don’t fix the damage exactly as it was before? And what parts of the body are thin of skin? I used to have a scar across my eye that’s completely healed now, but I have a permanent knee scar and 3 others on my other leg.
