I simply love this version! Most singers use the song to belt out as much as possible which I think is missing the point. Madonna makes me feel like she's aching like this is truly her last chance at happiness, although she's already beaten down knowing there is no real hope or chance in her pleading for him not to go away.
In the 90s Jose & Luis her backup dancers from the iconic 1990 Tour released this song Queens English with M singing limited background. I don’t remember how big a hit it was but I remember a friend had the cd single and played it.
Brel and Edith Piaf are better singers and their version is better. But Madonna made this song so dark and elegant, this is definitely my favorite English one. The interpretation of every single word and the emotions she put here are incredible!
For me, Brel and Piaf are not necessarily better singers. Madonna has far greater range than either. But Brel and Piaf both have that over-wrought, you've just been hit with a sledgehammer delivery which is hugely effecting and effective. And this song is very, very different in the English version. Just the phrase "ne me quitte pas" has far more desperation, abjection and hopelessness about it. Whereas "If you go away" is hypothetical and could just as easily be followed by "I think I'll have a cheese sandwich"! Madonna's version is more bittersweet and rather lovely but I prefer the demented, crazed Brel and Piaf versions. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a case of apples and oranges just in a long-winded, verbose way! Apologies...
