How to make Epoxy & Wood wall clocks

- Hi folks welcome to Man Cave Makings with me Gus,
In this episode I have made a series of Epoxy and wood wall clocks, which I have made out of English Yew. I bought the Yew on eBay and took a gamble as unless you go and pick your own lumber then it can be a bit of a lottery of what you might get through the door, but on this occasion it was perfect and the grain, colour, and sapling edge were all fantastic.
For the metal surrounds I used 3mm x 30mm flat bar along with 10mm square bar which I shaped on the ring roller and tack welded up. As mentioned In the video the pointers are made from 6mm round bar and shaped and tacked to the square bar. It’s a simple car paint rattle can system I use and to be fair it makes a pretty decent job of the finish but I do plan on upgrading to a air fed two part paint system in the future but for these, simple is best and the final coats are a clear matt finish lacquer.
I use GlassCast 50 epoxy along with a multitude of pigments and colours and I get them from a UK supplier Easy Composites www.easycompos... so go check their website out as they have tones of great offers plus great information. Full disclosure, I’m not sponsored by anyone to recommend any items in the video and can only offer my experience of using them as a reference.
When it came to the clock movement I had little knowledge of what was good or bad as these are the first clocks I’ve ever made. I jumped on eBay again and got some high torque quartz movements and sone extra long hands as the clocks are over 400mm in diameter. I won’t put a link to the clock moment on here, not that they are bad or anything more that there is quite literally hundreds to choose from so you will have to match your movement to your needs..........but at least like me you will spend hours debating with yourself over style, size, colour and movements..........Happy hunting!
I’m genuinely interested in the finishes of wood and epoxy as there are sooooooo many to choose from. I’ve tried a few and have landed on the Minwax wipe on poly which I have found great on the wood but also it does not effect the resin so can be used across the whole piece. Let me know what your experience is and share the finish knowledge around!
I hope I have covered all the bases in the video and here in the txt but if not please feel free to either drop me a comment in the usual manner also smashing the like button obviously 😆 but if you prefer you can email me at mancavemakings@outlook.com and if you want a sneak peak at future videos then check out my Instagram account @mancavemakings

Very cool. , dont have a roller to do the rim really want to try that
Thanks, many ways to get the metal formed in a circle, use a bit of plywood the right size and roll it that way would be an easy way if you fancy giving it a go. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻👍🏻
Great Job!! where you find hand's clock?
Hi Luis I buy mine on eBay from Dans clock shop. Hope that’s helpful and thanks for watching and commenting 👍
What did you use to make the mould?
Hallo, Just love your beautiful hand work. Truely work to be proud of. Please help me , What is the thickness of the steal belt around the wood.
Jacques
Cape Town
South Africa
Hi Jacques thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write a question. In this video the metal surrounds are made with 3mm x 30mm flat bar with a 10mm square wrapped around that. I have subsequently changed to a 1.6mm x 30mm flat bar to save weight as it get a bit heavy. Hope that helps 👍🏻
Wow great!! What is the material of mold ground?
Hi Saleh the moulds are made from polypropylene sheets as resin does not stick to it. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻👍🏻
@@ManCaveMakings thank you, have you tried before the acrylic plastic mold?
Thanks Saleh, not tried anything other than the polypropylene but have seen just a wooden form used with packing tape for example so there are plenty of options I think. Good luck 🤞🏻
Hi there, really nice clocks. I'm going to make one. I wondered if you would be so kind as to share the supplier details of the ring roller you purchased to make them?
Hi Shaun thanks for taking time to watch my content dude very much appreciated. The ring roller is made by Cyclops Designs in Sheffield England. The last time I looked they were no longer online but I’m sure if you google them it will come up. Cheers and thanks for the support 👍🏻👍🏻
These are absolutely beautiful!! What grit did you buff it down to for polishing? I got a little confused
Hi Harry, went from an 80 grit to 400 with normal sandpaper then switched to wet and dry sand paper at 800 through to 2500. Then onto the polishing compounds and final top coat. Hope that helps 👍🏻👍🏻
Hello my frend very nice 👍👏👏👏🇹🇷How many cm is the iron length
Hello from Scotland 🏴 Huseyin the diameter of the clock is 45cm. Hope that helps and thanks so much for getting in touch and watching my content 👍🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻
Mate, those look awesome! Do you get a lot of use out of your ring roller?
Hi scott, thanks for watching and commenting dude. It’s one of those tools which is not used often but when you need it you can’t do without it. Very handy for small jobs and I use the slip rollers for sheet material. Thanks 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Please can you please tell me your supplier for jigsaw blades
Hi Mark, I use Timco Addax range of blades which are durable and the best I’ve tested. If you jump onto their website www.timco.co.uk/ they have a button “find a stockiest” which will direct you to your nearest place. Hope that helps. Thanks for commenting and viewing 👍
These are so so good! great craftsmanship! can I ask, what was the ring roller you used there? it looks a decent one
Hi Marcel thanks for the kind words they are beautiful in real life. The ring roller is great and I got it on eBay from cyclops designs give them a look up. Not cheap but decent quality 👍
@@ManCaveMakings Very nice and original work as Always.
I could not find Cyclops Designs on eBay and the but it looks their websites is closed www.cyclopsdesigns.co.uk if it's theirs. Could you please help me, I'd really like to buy such wood. Thank you.
Hi Ano, thanks for the message my man, yes I think that’s their website but sad if they’ve closed. As for wood I have bought from various sources but all on eBay in the UK. I search for English yew, live edge wood, waney edge wood, and so on and see what comes up. I don’t buy anything which is less than 1inch thick as usually it comes a little wet so once dried and dressed the usable wood isn’t the desired thickness. Be careful when using Yew as it’s got some poisonous spores which when ingested can make you ill so can’t be used chopping boards for example and always use a respirator when sanding etc. Hope that helps 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks a lot for the infos. I didn't know about toxicity of Yew.
I just watched your Vintage Vice Pedestal video. A really nice piece of Art.
I wish you all the best for the future.
Voce acha no mercado livre, barato.
Desculpe, en nao sei, boa sorte 🤙🏻
what is the type of the wood ?
Loads of info in the description Hisham but it’s English Yew. Thanks 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Beautiful clocks.
Just a bit of advice... Try to do something about your volume levels. The music is WAY louder than your narration.
Thanks for your feedback Dave, this is definitely something I’m aware of now and as I have learnt the editing process I am conscious of the levels of music vs speech vs background noise and in my more recent videos I have worked hard on these. Thanks for the feedback it’s much appreciated 🤜🏻🤛🏻🙏🏻
How much would you sell each of those clocks for my friend? a mean
If you would sell them ?
Thanks Victor for sending me an email which I will respond to. Thanks for the support 👍🏻👍🏻
How much are you selling them for?
Thanks CC send me an email if tour interested in one. Cheers
Trying to find your email :/ ??
Details in the about section of my maim page mancavemakings@outlook.com 👍😎
Hey mate what wood is it
English Yew Stephen 👍🏻👍🏻
Did a beautiful job. Well done.
My only complaint is that your very hard to hear with your music in the background at the same time. Next time ditch the music all together.
Thanks Rach, really appreciate the feedback and I like the music but agree with the levels could have been better in this video. Thanks for commenting and it’s good to know you enjoyed the end product. 🙏🏻👍🏻
