I was a huge metalhead as a teen when I first heard Hendrix, listened to him a little bit, dubbed Jimi Plays Monterey & his movie, but the tape sat & collected dust. Did sir Paul say it wouldn't truly be "international" unless Jimi performed? Does he (and the British in general) really think that because Jimi first made it big in England, that it means that Jimi is British and is NOT an American?? Did I misunderstand? I guess, at that time, Jimi was only big in England, not America. So in that respect, he was a rock star, and an American - who was not a rock star in America - yet. That's what they're implying, I suppose.
Honestly...Jimi's stage machinations were amazing...but his actual playing was just so-so, for him! Witnesses have said that Hendrix had ingested several drugs, prior to taking the stage. And I think that has something to do with his ragged playing. There are quite few live performances, in which Jimi played much better, than at Monterey.
I was there for three days and three nights at 19 tears of age, In the Air Force, attending the Monterey language school, seeing more in those days than in the last 50 plus years. It was mind blowing! I had to jump the rodeo fence because I didn’t have enough money to get in and stood on the inside of the pavilion for hours at a time to listen for free deep into each night!
Awesome! What a great story. Please feel free to share your memories (my email: pcoory@gmail), I would love to publish it! Thank you for sharing this and best wishes!
At the end here it becomes apparent that the experience might never have happened. Mitch says some guy who asked for a strawberry told him to open his hands and then this guy places ... a LOT of Owsley acid in them and Mitch puts them in his pocket. Melt? Yes, it has happened...and the results would've ended in a psych ward. I only had Owsley once and it was Whoosh. Clean but mind-blowing. Still, if they melted Mitch would not only have been out of it for the show but as Journey to the Center of Your Mind lyrics warn, "You might not come back." Whew. Monterey exploded into theatres and even in 1972-shockingly-they showed it in the gymnasium when I was a freshman. There were Midnight showings where 1/2 of your school was in line and smoking weed in and out of the theater for this and Woodstock until the parents and cops figured it out. No play on radio and then FM radio came to light and played whole album sides. But for the most part Monterey is where it blew up and started.
Never experienced Owsly, but the video mentioned STP. Holy $hit, that I encountered in the early 70's! Went to a Zappa concert in '72, Chicago and was still in high school. Here I am tripping my balls off, made it home luckily my parents didn't look to close at me!😂 I got to sleep but woke up the next morning for class, still blazing my a$$ off?! I'm like screw this and cut class, I was in no condition to function? I didn't come down until that afternoon!
Really great break down on the whole history of the Monterey Pop festival 👍💯 honestly Mike Jeffrey should have never ever been Jimi Hendrix manager you know who I think really should have managed the Jimi Hendrix experience Peter Grant the one who managed led Zeppelin to meet that guy was one of the best managers ever if he had to manage Jimi Hendrix he would have still been alive
Yea ..Peter Grant he was great. Just about killed one of Bill Graham's production managers in Oakland over nothing. One of the violent things that asshole was involved with.Just a big pig. ..... Hendrix would have hated someone like Peter Grant .. Mike Jeffrey had his faults, like wanting to keep Hendrix playing to pay the bills & his investments. But overall he served Jimi pretty well. ..........And Hendrix died of chocking on his vomit. He took too many very powerful sleeping pills. He also had a problem when sleeping on his back. Fayne Pridgen & other woman tell of having to wake him up sometimes because he couldn't breath when sleeping. He was also doing lots of drugs at that time & I believe trying to cut down. So his body was vulnerable. ...And yes he had lots of stress. He was thinking about changing mgrs, not sure about the future. Worried about Billy Cox who was having psychological episodes,( probably dosed wth LSD), & had to go back to the states. Some concerts had to be cancelled..Just lots of pressure.
@@nonamejames5674 I totally agree and respect your remarks, especially about Peter Grant!...Jimi would not have related well to such a violent bully! And for sure, Jeffery did NOT have anything to do with Jimi's death. Hendrix was ultimately the victim of his own impulsiveness--that, ironically, had worked so well for him during his Life journey. He embraced taking chances, living on the edge, etc. Sadly, he made a negligent choice with the sleeping pills--he death was his own fault!
The “Strangers In The Night” bit got me thinking… Joe Perry, the Aerosmith lead guitarist would often play this bit at the end of Train Kept A Rollin’ at concerts. He ADORED Jimi…and this REALLY shows on an obscure tune from his first JPP solo album from 1980. The song titled Break Song, is (in my opinion) not only is a showcase for Joe’s immense guitar prowess talent, but I feel that if Jimi were among the living he’d most certainly give this thing a THUMBS UP! Please seek out this short little boogie tune and play it LOUD. It’s so awesome please trust me. The guitar leads are just SOARING…loud n proud!
Having Brian Jones come along as the one requirement was genius. They-American kids all knew who he was. Jimi who? Well, if Brian says so. The Stones were already on Ed Sullivan and had many hits by then.

Real good. Let me put some filler in therefor you. The Grateful Dead played after the Who and before The Experience. Even by the Dead's own admission their performance was not very good.
