I took a trip their too, but didn't come back. I lived in Suzhou for 6 years, and it was amazing. Once I went, I was like "screw it, I'll stay for a bit".

Listening to the part about the cultural norms document- I’m impressed and obsessed with how well thought out the planning of this trip was. I work an admin job at another University in NC. That part of the story was deeply satisfying.

I gotta agree, I was very impressed the whole time with the level of planning for the whole trip. Everywhere we went, train tickets were ready, or someone was ready to pick us up, or hotel rooms were ready, or people ready to give us a tour, it was all very well done. Even just the process of getting the Chinese visa. I think largely thanks to the NC Education Society and our Office of Global Engagement.

A free opportunity to go to another country sounds awesome, being able to have a glimpse to a part of their lives and culture. I'm envious that you were able to ride their trains (especially the maglev train) wish we had them in the states and the food you got to eat. Thanks for sharing your trip to China with us.
About the guy working on a Mao portrait, I'm sure Chinese people are taught their own history around Mao. That time is still in living memories and arguably they probably know more about it than we do. Both the good parts of his teachings and his failures as a leader. It's good to remember that we're never going to be told the full picture of a leadership from a system that goes against our system's interest. It's good practice to question the bias perspective that we're told or we'll never get the full picture.

I saw your photos on Instagram, and it seems like your trip really gave you an authentic touch of Chinese culture.
First, in southern China, there’s no central heating, so winters can feel really cold indoors. It mainly comes down to economic reasons-China is an energy-scarce country and doesn’t have huge oil reserves. That’s also why the shift toward electric vehicles has become a big push in the last 10 years. When I was studying in the U.S., my university kept lights on in 6-7 dining halls all night long, that’s something you’d never see in China.
Second, those tall apartment buildings you saw are kind of a reflection of China’s industrialization and modernization. Industrial growth needs urbanization, so people tend to live more densely. Also, southern China’s hilly terrain makes it different from the U.S., where much of the land is flat plains. And since the U.S. has undergone deindustrialization, there just aren’t as many factories left. I’m from Hangzhou, which used to be the capital of China during the Song Dynasty. The city has a rich heritage of traditional Chinese painting, poetry, and art. If you ever get the chance, you should definitely visit the China Academy of Art here.
By the way, your art style reminds me of something I might’ve chosen when I was younger, great mix of structure and organic flow. Love it!

Love the extra long video! I'm jealous of all the food you got to experience. The way I interpret the way they describe Uni Courses is that they say the quiet part out loud. Like, imagine if the Universities that follow capitalism said of their classes, "You are paying us to learn how to be better workers." Bit of an exaggeration, perhaps, but you get what I mean.

the heating thing is deff cultural. I would assume most of the world does not do heating like the US. me personally I dont get it, i live in a hot place so I love it when its cold and i get to use anything else than a t shirt. I dont get heating cuz we have clothes. Cooling i get because when its hot you can't keep taking clothes off forever.
