Beautiful sound and articulation.... That piece is incredibly hard and he makes it look so easy.... Bravo Mr. Bilger... I had the pleasure of meeting you when I first started playing the trumpet. You came to my elementary school and played for us.
The music itself is so complex Mr. Bilger must have the gift of photographic memory! To memorize an extremely "difficult" composition like this, is simply amazing!
This is by far the BEST live performance around. I listen to it all the time as a model for what I want to make the Tomasi concerto sound like. So glad this is on UA-cam!
I remember working on this piece in college, definitely one of the most deceivingly difficult pieces I've ever attempted. It was humbling to say the least. Amazing work here!!!!
Dave Bilger's exquisite sound on display! What magical playing that I can't get enough of. This seems to be not long after he arrived in Philly. Thanku for this gift me Blackburn!
That piece is a beast and David performed it so well. Beautiful articulation and style. Missed notes are just a factor of how much of a chop buster this piece is.
I love this performance of the Tomasi. Beautiful sound, colors and articulation. Whenever I am working on this solo, I find myself referencing this performance, along with recordings. This is a very challenging Concerto in our repertoire and Mr. Bilger makes it sound so easy and beautiful. Bravo.
Someone who expects perfection clearly. What I love about Dave Bilger is that he is not flawless. He's human. Mistakes happen in his performances but what he plays is beautiful and musical.
chuckthenugget There is no thing as perfection. David Bilger's live performance was spectacular. I agree with William Leathers. How often to we hear this concerto performed live? Next to never. I find your comments quite disturbing.
stumbled across this. an excellent performance, amongst the very best. the Tomasi is a very difficult piece. Bilger made this look easy. (the original score calls for Trompette en UT = a C trumpet).
Tremendous player, thanks for posting Roger. I know a former student of yours who came to IU in the late 80s to study. He always spoke so highly of you. Drop me a private note if you get a chance...
Does anyone knew what C trumpet he performing on in this video? Shires, Yamaha or other? As I understand he's a Yamaha artist now, but he was previously with Shires? Definitely love the solid bold resonant sound and balanced articulation and evenness...bet it was even more so if hearing it live.
Trumpeters could do with some great concertos to add to the Haydn (composers take note). I don't think this is one of them but the soloist is first class.
A pity for the poor sound recording. The orchestra sounds muffled but the trumpet has a lot of clarity and projection! I admire Mr. Bilger his achievement although I don't believe it was his best performance maybe. All trumpeters know that Tomasi is very tricky but nevertheless I was not that impressed by the overall performance both of solist and orchestra. I missed the French charm in the piece as heard when Maurice André for instance performed this.
This video was made (discreetly) from the back of a box seat on a Sony Hi8 format home video camera. David performed this under the rigors of being an orchestral principal which meant that there were other heavy duty pieces required before (morning rehearsal) and after this solo. He also was a featured soloist with the Tomasi on a tour of South America with the orchestra which followed this particular series of performances. I have never heard a more accurate "live" performance in my lifetime and disagree with you that it lacked the "French" charm of André. I'm sure that André's recording was made under a much more relaxed atmosphere than this and with smaller equipment...particularly the mouthpiece. David was using a Bach 1 and a quarter C at the time. I'll never forget his immaculate performance of this during his audition process to become a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra (required rep at the time!). Bravo again, Dave, for all your consistent artistry through the years!
Dear Mr. Blackburn, thank you for your sincere reply. For sure to perform the Tomasi concerto is a real achievement. I surely was impressed by the opening but about certain parts I was less enthusiastic. Audiences might feel this way even on a UA-cam performance. I got the feeling that the orchestra was not that inspired and supporting. Difficult for a solist maybe. Your explanation about this being an audition gives some understanding. Kind regards from The Netherlands, Theo Hartman
continuous brass Saying that you were “not impressed by the soloist” is absurd. Your definition of “French Charm” by Maurice Andrew is simply over blowing and lack of Dynamic control. Playing harder does not make a performance more impressive. Bilger has the perfect amount of finesse and Articulation that makes the piece feel light and weightless even in its most striking parts. Bilger’s dynamic control and articulation are just about spot on and flawlessly portraying this music for everything it was meant for, on top of all the added pressures mentioned above. Reading your arrogant comment annoyed me enough to write this one of my own.
Beautiful sound and articulation.... That piece is incredibly hard and he makes it look so easy.... Bravo Mr. Bilger... I had the pleasure of meeting you when I first started playing the trumpet. You came to my elementary school and played for us.
I was there for this, at the Academy, in the nose bleeds, knees pulled up to my chin. What an amazing performance! Bilger is STILL so good.
David Bilger is such a magnificent player!!!! Great performance of the Tomasi Concerto!
The music itself is so complex Mr. Bilger must have the gift of photographic memory!

Lovely big, clear sound, clear articulation. Even across the range of the trumpet. Nicely done!
This is such a superb and effortless sounding performance of the Tomasi. You do Andre proud.
When I was young Gil Johnson, the principal trumpet of the Philly, was my idol. Bilger is a fine successor.
Incredibly difficult piece done so well as to make it sound almost easy. Amazing work.
Stupendo !
Mr. David Bilger, is the great master of trumpet ;i like very much of work and performances ! bravo
The work of a lifetime of dedication. Impressive performance .So beautiful.
Dave Bilger's exquisite sound on display! What magical playing that I can't get enough of. This seems to be not long after he arrived in Philly. Thanku for this gift me Blackburn!
Perfect marvallous👍🎺
Bravo...cher maitre ...
Fantastic recording! Thank you for sharing.

Great performance. Thanks for uploading.
Gorgeous playing... an inspiration.

Großartiger Trompeter...und großartiger Lehrer !!! Bravissimo !!!
What a great live Tomasi. Mr. Bilger is my favorite orchestral player today.
BRAVISSIMO 👏👏🎺
beautiful second movement.
Great performance!
I wanna know who the one disliker of this video is... like really? Do you know how hard this piece is? Mr. Bilger, great work!
Someone who expects perfection clearly. What I love about Dave Bilger is that he is not flawless. He's human. Mistakes happen in his performances but what he plays is beautiful and musical.
Exactly! Well put.

MY comments are disturbing...?
Funny, of all the live versions I've heard Bilger's is my favorite.
Realy, realy good!👍
Bravissimo concerto difficile eseguito con cura tecnica musicalità bravo bravo
Best I’ve heard it
just fantastic.. wow
Lovely. Thanks for sharing.

That is a C trumpet

Takes a virtuoso to perform this and Bilger is definitely one.
Bravo!
I can just enjoy since I am not musically literate.

He was using a Bach 229 bell Large Bore and 25H lead pipe
Now he uses a yamaha new york C
Beautiful sound. A few missed notes here or there but man, this is a tough piece and he really did a wonderful job with it.
a few missee notes??? Are you kidding lol
zaknefain100 .......what is the point in saying "A few missed notes"? This is simply a tremendous job on a world class piece of music.
Warmer sound and much more robust staccato than Dokshitzer. There, I said it.
Super
bravo bravo. you play that mouthpiece ??
Trumpeters could do with some great concertos to add to the Haydn (composers take note). I don't think this is one of them but the soloist is first class.
This is an awesome concerto, it's just so much harder than Haydn and Hummel that it's not played by everyone and their mother.
oh, and Arutunian is another great one
Elliot Rose and lovelock
What orchestra is this?
Sehr gut
It'd be nice to know the name of the orchestra, conductor, and date of performance.
Just before the orchestra tune up that information is scrolled at the bottom of the screen

Klasse, David Bilger!
(wobei die Komposition keinen großen Wert hat....)
Ich bevorzuge Philips Smith.
Das ist nicht genug.

This is what I call a civil disagreement. Congratulations, gentlemen.
