Once she gets knocked on the head it becomes a dream sequence. That's why it becomes unrealistic with the cow, the lady in the rocking chair, etc. Still, this sequence scared the hell out of a lot of us kids back in the day. Still pretty creepy now. And I think it really was someone who had actually seen a tornado who created this sequence - too much is accurate.

    • @AlanCanon2222

YES^^^^ It's dream sequence from there to the entire end of the movie. Still, even in the composite shots of the woman knitting, the men rowing... I know the basic techniques available back then. In camera, optical printing, matte paintings, miniatures. Whether the Wizard of Oz invented any of these techniques, I'm not so sure on, but this movie used every available technique to the hilt. I think I'd like to say that about it, actually. Star Wars kind of did the same thing, 38 years later. YES, The Wizard of Oz was a great technical achievement, NO, it did not come out of the blue. The break neck speed of special effects science started in the 1900s, and it was the same in 1939 as it had been in 1919, and is now, in 2022. I will say that it's probably pretty obvious that everyone who makes a movie now in 2022 has studied movies like Wizard of Oz from 1939, etc. It is a great thing to live in the second full century of cinema.

I think to make the tornado, they used a nylon stocking. Can't remember what they used for the clouds. I assume matte painting was part of it.

I think it's sad that Hollywood today has a million times better graphics and more tornado research. And yet this movie made in the 30s is much much more realistic. That baffles my mind. We should be getting better not worst 🤦

No tornado just rain and flooded. I want to see how accurate that is.

I understand tMGM simply didn't have any real movie footage to use so they HAD to create this special effect. It was inspired by someone seeing a wind sock at an airport. The dust was diatomaceous earth/fuller's earth being dumped into a muslin tube so it could blow out.
Love the woman calmly knitting and the guys in the canoe.
I was SO disappointed by Twister's twisters which among other things didn't capture the effect of total chaos of wind and dust as the tornado got closer, especially the final one at the end of the movie. Also was let down by Disney's OZ, The Great & Powerful's puny twister.

Amazing reaction and scene rating you two! Loved your commentary!
I have always loved the tornado scene in the Wizard of Oz. The tornado looks so incredibly realistic as it snakes back and forth, churning up the Kansas prairie. In the book entitled: “The Making of the Wizard of Oz” written by Aljean Harmetz, she provides an absolutely fascinating account of how the tornado was constructed.
Special effects coordinator and inventor Arnold Gillespie didn't know much about tornadoes but realized he couldn't go to Kansas and wait for a tornado to come down and pick up a house. So, he relied upon his background as a pilot for many years (even had his own airplane) for his idea. He remembered that wind socks at airports resembled the shape of a tornado. He decided to make a tornado out of muslin (plain woven cloth) keeping it flexible so that it could bend, twist, and move from side to side.
Gillespie finally built a thirty-five foot long tapered muslin sock. The top of the tornado was connected to a steel gantry suspended from the top of the stage. It was a mobile structure similar to those used in warehouses to lift heavy objects and could travel the entire length of the stage. The bottom of the tornado disappeared into a slot in the stage floor. A rod came up through the base of the tornado to pull it from one side to another. By moving the gantry and the rod in opposite directions, it would make the tornado appear to snake back and forth.
The muslin fabric was mended with music wire so it would hold together when spun. This was a tedious task as one person had to be inside the tornado to poke the needle back out each time. To heighten the illusion, a product known as "fuller’s earth", a powdery brown dust, was sprayed into the base of the tornado with hoses containing compressed air. The same material also was sprayed into the top of the wind sock. The result was a mass of dirt or cloud. The muslin was sufficiently porous that some of the dirt sifted through giving a blur or softness to the material. This also kept the sides of the tornado fuzzy, so that it didn't look like a hard surface.
Four or five feet in front of the cameras were two panels of glass on which grey balls of cotton (great for Mammatus clouds) had been pasted. The two panels moved in opposite directions adding to the boiling sensation of the storm and, at the same time, they obscured the steel gantry and top portion of the tornado. Dense clouds of yellow-black smoke made from sulfur and carbon were injected onto the set from a catwalk above the gantry.
Once the tornado had been filmed, rear- projection was used to transfer the previously shot tornado image onto a translucent screen while the actors were placed in front of it. Wind machines provided the big blow while stage hands threw dried leaves and other debris in the air. When the tornado came real close to the house at the end of the scene, more debris and dirt were added in the foreground to obscure the tornado while providing more realism. The tornado scene in the Wizard of Oz ended up costing more money than any other special effect in the movie.
Remember the first scene of the tornado where Dorothy is running home to Aunt Em after visiting Professor Marvel? Dorothy's house can be seen in the background with the barn to the right. These structures were actually miniatures scaled at three quarter of an inch to the foot. The house was not more than three feet high and adjacent cornfields were about three inches tall! The tornado swayed back and forth as fuller’s earth, carbon, and sulfur drift downward appearing like bursts of rain. Of course, the deafeningly loud wind sound really makes this scene too!

The tornado effect was created by using a twisting core of metal wire that was draped with black material. The core could be twisted from left to right, and the faster they spun the contraption, the more debris they added, the better it looked on screen. What you see on screen is an In Camera Speacial Effect and to this day, The Wizard of Oz contains the best Twister Scene.

It's amazing that a film made in 1939 has a far more realistic tornado than a 1996 movie ("Twister") - which used all CGI, and the tornado in Twister looked fake as hell and CHEAP. Plus, there's a love scene right UNDER a tornado....I wonder if CGI has produced LAZINESS by filmmakers today.

I don't know if you've seen the test footage that wasn't in the final movie, but it's terrifying even for me. The tornado was a bit closer to the house, and it might have been a little bit bigger. It's also a lot darker, and they even had what looks like a dust storm at the end.

They didn’t have 1940’s didn’t have CGI, they just looked at real tornadoes and mimicked it, or it’s just tornado footage. so the contemporary storm movies have no excuse to be bad since there’s tons of free material on the internet of tornadoes look like, and behave.

I think what also contributed to the uncanny realism of the tornado was the strict use of practical effects. They had no CGI, so they were forced to use a real “funnel,” real dirt, real debris, real wind, etc. Everything behaves exactly as you would expect it to in reality because they’re objects in actual space under the influence of gravity and wind currents. It’s much harder to mimic the physics of millions of particles flying through the air when you’re using a computer. I still think that the way to go about depicting tornadoes in movies is to use mostly practical effects with CGI only present for touch ups here and there. You just can’t get CGI clouds and dirt to look and behave like the real deal. Maybe someday, but not right now.

I got into meteorology when I became an amateur astronomer. I got into the WoO much earlier! In fact, in the 60s, it played just once a year, and we only had a B/W TV, so I didn't even know the dream was in color till years later!
Anyhow, as for the image quality, to clear things up (coincidental pun), there was no "video" at all in 1939! But I suspect you would surmise that, if you thought about it a bit more. I guess today, sometimes we just loosely use "video" even when it's film. Also, sepia tone film of that era had higher resolution than 4K digital of today.
OK, the "video" comment just stood out to me, so was compelled to leave a comment. Weather your care or not is another matter ;) :D ...
