Hey great video! You have summarized in a few minutes an enormous amount of work you must have put to get all these facts. The best mic review I have found in UA-cam. Sincere congrats
This video is the bomb! Thanks for the comparison!
Yes, the 2 mics I wrote down were also the Rode NT5 and the DPA 2011. Great ears hear alike.
Helpful thank you. The Rode NT5 has a nice sheen to the top end. The 2011C has a nice bit of low end. However that AT4081 ribbon mic was really generous sounding.
Thanks for this video! I was wondering for choosing rode nt5 or akg c1000s. Glad to hear that your fave is nt5 too!
Thanks for all the information in these videos. Subscribed ✅
Being able to hear your experimentation with different mics is an invaluable resource for a small church like ours. Thank you for the tips, ideas, and tests you have been doing. I am also considering using Barrier mics for congregation recording, have you played with these much?
DPA 2011 if long term install, but NT5 10 year warranty and price is just too good. Great review!
The Shure SM81 Sound get the Body i wanted for the choir
Sm81 the best and DPA
Bought a pair of SM81 after this vid. Could not be more satisified.
As soon as I heard the DPA, I got (predictably) happy. If I were to buy a pair, however, I'd go with the Røde. Bang-for-the-buck-wise, it's to good to ignore.
Thanks for the video Steven,
You put much effort into sharing your knowledge.
I suspect the UA-cam audio compression destroyed much of our ability to hear the differences on this end as the viewers... or maybe it is my hearing :-(
The mics tended to sound pretty similar on my Beyerdynamic 990 Pro's.
Hello ! Thank you for this super video!!
How many mics I have to setup in a 20-people-choir's live performance ? For example I have NT5, but how many?
For 20 people I'd probably go with 2 mics. Kind of depends how they are arranged, wide, or deep, etc. but 2 should be plenty.
The NT5 was my favorite in the first video (not knowing your preference).... and remains my mic of choice after watching video 2. However, fyi, my second choice was the AT Ribbon mic. Great demo and thanks. I am now looking at a matched pair of the NT5s. However, I would be curious if you have heard the Rode stereo NT4 and your opinion...
I haven't worked with the NT4 myself. I heard a recording made by someone else of a choir that sang at our facility and it sounded fine, but it's been a while, don't really remember anything specific about it.
The NT5, as you selected, is a favorite of mine. Very versatile mic and I just discovered this Michael Joly Capsule that would give it some additional use/versatility. I haven't tried one personally but thought you may find it interesting. I'm weak when it comes to mic collection! Really great quality and informative posts on your site. Thanks for sharing!! lol..www.oktavamodshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=230
Gracias maestro
dpa works best for me. im surprised how kr2c got the 2nd place also
beautiful watched your first video tried recording with my music band using Rode and it was amazing though I would be glad if you can share what was your favorite as I would like to get some advise from a pro like you. Thanks in advance
All things considered I'd select the Rode NT5 right now. Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful.
much love that's my favorite too
I've also heard good things from other churches about the Shure KSM137 Stereo Pair. Any insight to offer for this mic?
I haven't used that mic specifically, I'm sure it would work fine.
Hi Stephen and others ... I have referenced so many videos from the ballast media channel and have learned so much from them. Great work! I run sound for a very small Church with not much finance to spare for sound systems. We are trying to use the Behringer C2 at the moment to mic our choir. As you know these are entry level matched pair. My question is - Are the gain structures on these mics also supposed to be matched? When I tested out units recently I found that 1 of the mics was working fine at around a quarter of the trim knob but the other one had to be cranked up to more than half and still didn't respond well to the same sound sources. I am wondering if 1 of these units is faulty. Can you or anyone help me understand this? Thanks.
There is a switch on the C2 microphone that will engage a -10db pad. Are both of these off on both mics? This would be a common reason for one mic to need a different gain level. Next I'd swap the mics between the same cable/channel on the board and see if the levels remain the same, or if the issue follows the mic. Could be a bad cable, or a pad turned on on the audio mixer.
@@BallastMedia Thanks for the reply... Appreciate it sir! So was I right in assuming that the needed gain structure should also match for the mics?
We kept the switch on the flat position for both mics. We swapped the cables and still got the same results. We didn't apply any filter padding from the mixer itself to both mics. Ultimately we ended up returning the units for replacements. Hoping that the next batch will work as expected. Thanks again.
Btw I need to mic a small group (2 acoustic guitars and 5 voices) using my laptop for a hobby project (read “tiny budget”) and was thinking of using a USB mic. What would you recommend? Unfortunately I have only 100 USD to spend on this :-(
In the $100 range I'd go with the Rode NT-USB amzn.to/3dLbiDs
Thanks for the video. If I need to record a piano do you think the rode still will be better than the shure sm 81?
Lior Lifshitz I'd use a pair of NT5's over an sm81 yes.
Did you see my video on Piano Mics? They are a bit pricier then an 81 or NT5, but are meant for piano. ua-cam.com/video/Jpz7-8palS0/v-deo.html But for recording you'd still get a great sound from a pair of NT5s setup like this video describes in it's first technique: ua-cam.com/video/3XlN3kc1Hx0/v-deo.html
Ballast Media
Thanks, yes I saw but they are too expensive for me. Hope the rode will do good:)
By the way if I want to record from stage and put the camera in a distance so what do I need to connect to the mic?
What do you think about trying shotgun mics from up high 35-40 above and 30-40 away from the choir?
For recording, maybe, but definitely not going to work for live reinforcement.
Hello,
I am technical responsible for a big kinder garden association in Berlin. We have mostly the choir performances of the kids and as you know they are mostly 4 to 6 years old. I need to buy one those microphones to reflect their performances better. We are mostly performing 15 to 20 kids on the stage and I thought that 4 surrounded microphone will be enough. As a budget, I have decided to buy Rode NT5. Is that okay for the performances what I have mentioned? And I see mostly the Rode NT5 MP. That is a completely different version or it is okay to buy one of MP versions. Here small info:
German Prices of those mics:
Rode NT5 (MP) : 200 eu and if it is bought 2 mics at one, it can be found for 315 eu.
Shure mx202WP/C: 222 Eu
I am open to other microphones suggestions which are not listed in these videos. And we have 1000 eu for this purpose.
+Ramazan Keskinoğlu the rode nt5 would be ideal for this. 2 mics should cover 20 kids well. The 'mp' designation just means 'matched pair.' Just means they have selected two mics that have very similar characteristics. Best of luck!
Since you are professional sound. can you help me out this situation. we rent the church for Mass and we are not be able to connect directly to church sound system. we have to use one of the mic lines going to their mixer. we have to face to problem is the feedback speaker above our head around 8ft. we using 5 Audio Technica AT853a. two of five mics ringing alot( closest to feedback speaker). I can't push enough gain so sound very thin. I'm looking for different mic so can reduce feedback and I consider Rode NT5. do you think NT5 will help me solve ringing noise or get better quality sound? thanks a lot.
To be honest, the biggest factor in gain before feedback (GBF) in your situation is the physical relationship between your mic and speakers. Changing the mic may make a small improvement, but I doubt it will be significant enough to be worth it. Is there any way you can make the microphones/where your choir is located?
I'll try 2 NT5 first to see any improvement. thanks Ballast
@@trucchinh563 Hi, I know this is an old thread but have you found any good MICs that could combat the feedback issue better for your situation ? My church is in similar situation with feedback and I really want to know. Thanks.
Trung Quốc Trinh Rode NT5 is best choice and using digital mixer like UI24R. Compact size but powerful mixer. EQ mic and out put to reduce ringing. You can join ui24r group on Facebook to learn more about this mixer. I chose this mixer because I have to moving equipment up and down stairs so I need compact size. The manufacturer providing new firmware with new features and you can ask for new features on Facebook.
No AKG C 451B?
I prefer NT5
00:00
00:35 RODE
01:12 DPA
I picked the rode before watching your choice.
What song is your choir singing?
1. "Thou O Lord" - Lisa Ireland, arr. Carol Cymbala
2. "Jesus Paid it All" - Hall
Hello.
What about Shure MX202?
It's a nice mic. Go ahead and listen to my PART 1 video, you'll hear more of it there. The MX202 is actually what we originally had installed in our facility. I was wanting to upgrade, but after hearing how little difference there is between the 202 and other mics it's harder for me to pull the trigger. If I were to upgrade, I'd probably go with the Rode NT5. The MX202 is a decent sounding mic. ua-cam.com/video/lNrXewr0tto/v-deo.html
Thanks for the answer. Rode NT5 is expensive for us. I think we will buy the MX202.
NT5 is only about $20 more list price, but actual price from a dealer is about the same.
Ah. Yeah. I mixed up with the MX202B/S. We need four pieces for the church. And here in Ukraine it became bad with the industry and the economy. Plus, there is still war ... So have to buy used microphones...
If it's what you can get and afford, it should work fine for you. I'm still using 3 just about every week. Best of luck!
Rode nt5
I also considered the Rode NT5 and the DPA 2011 to be the best sounding. But for me, the NT5 won hands-down. Price difference aside, to my ears, the NT5 simply sounded better. However, as we all know, or at least I hope we all know, sound quality is a subjective matter of opinion.
What about rode m5 for choir mic
It will probably work fine. I haven't tried it, so I can't really say.
@@BallastMedia hope we'll heard about rode m5 in your new review
Mx202 sounded best
Meh … Just EQ the NT5 in post.
Great video but we need practicals
