  • Hi folks! Just a quick one today, finding out how the traditionally trenched potatoes are doing beneath the surface. I was really surprised to realise that usually these wouldn't be ready until another month, but I think given the super dry weather this is still a really good harvest. Let me know what you think!

    Nice harvest, JB. Yes, looking good. btw, my tip is, don't overthink when planting anything. Just bung it in and tell it to grow. :) Again, nice harvest.

    Whether in the ground or in buckets, all my potatoes are planted at the end of March, I have always done this. And when in the ground I planted six inches deep then earth up over the top straight away, foliage usually appears around mid to late May and usually avoids all frost, if one is forecast I will quickly rake over some more soil. Nice harvest Jb, I love Kind Edwards too, best potato for roasting!...Steve...🙂

    Nice video that's the second potato harvest that's done really well, I've seen this week, unfortunately I'm not fit enough for the digging part which is why I do the buckets. Please stay safe and DONT FORGET your tip for tomorrow.

    Great to see you growing in the ground as it seems to be becoming unfashionable. I grow first earlies, internal kidney when available, some Maris Peer in tubs but main crop in the ground. Tubs have been replanted with beetroot and dwarf french beans as the spuds are harvested.

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  2 роки тому +1

      Dwarf beans! Fantastic idea, maybe I'll give those a go next year

    That's a good harvest of potatoes, no wondering you had beaming smile.
    I had a disappointing harvest yesterday, (still have plenty to harvest later in month) but I also had a small potatoes growing up the stem right to the top in some cases.
    So the better formed ones I will replant and see, have you come across this before?

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  2 роки тому +1

      I've actually got the same thing happening to the ones that I've left in the ground. They were planted just in a single hole and I'm guessing they just have an easier time when the bed has been dug and the soil is nice and loose?

    Great harvest but why grow Maris Piper? You can get them in Tesco. I don't grow in pots either and plant in March - in Scotland.

    • @JBNat

      Well the honest answer Sue... Every spring hits me like a train out of nowhere and I never plan ahead. Suddenly its just the end of February and I've forgotten to get my onion sets and seed potatoes and rush out and get the first thing I can find 🤣 must try better next year!!

  • @geraldinekelly1301

    JB this really helped me. I planted my main crop potatoes mid April aand like you I'planted Maris Piper. Mines are in containers which I normally do every year for main crop. However this year my potatoes started dying back really early. I've never harvested main crop until end of August or September any other year so I was worried about them. So do you think I should go ahead and get them out?? I'm still harvesting second earlies! Anyway, fantastic harvest for you JB... and great to see that no potatoes were harmed in the making of this video haha!! Thank you JB xx

    Really interesting video. I have been growing mine in a raised bed and buckets and find very little difference in cropping. There has been a mixture of Swift and Wilja and so far I am averaging just over 2lb of pots per plant. Over the winter I am extending my raised beds and my plan is to grow all the pots in one raised bed. I dont think the cost of the compost for growing in buckets is viable any more and there is such a lot of extra work with buckets.

    • @malcolmbarber4457

      I grew both of those too, I suffered alot of split potatoes of the swift variety, how did yours do?

    • @trevord1021
      @trevord1021 2 роки тому

      Swift were very good. No problem with splitting. They were a good size and lovely taste. Cook well but skins were quite thick for new pots. I have some Charlotte to dig soon so will be interesting to see what they are like.

    Thanks for sharing your great potato harvest. How do you store your potatoes at home?

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  2 роки тому +1

      I just stick them in a sack (with a tray underneath to catch all the loose soil) in a kitchen cupboard and they last an age!

  • @carefreecanines
    @carefreecanines 2 роки тому

    JB I would love to know how you store them, I stored them in cardboard boxes covered with the newspaper last year and it was a disaster :(

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  2 роки тому +1

      What went wrong with them? Mine just go in the cupboard but I don't usually have this many! I'm tempted to store them all in a big pot full of sand or soil that's kept dry. They keep well in the soil for months some times so I figure that might be best?

  • @amiladybug9526

  • @PreatorRaszagal
    @PreatorRaszagal 2 роки тому

    Is that big potato a hamburger (whooper)? 🤪I don't know what the "normal" size of those varieties, but they look like good sized spuds to me! I always feel curious when people talk about growing for example lettuce and they have like 10 plants. It always feels like that will never be enough, but growing chillies myself I know it's not just about that. It's the experience as well, and eating something you've grown on your own! I don't use potatoes, but how much of your "consumption" would you say is covered by these potatoes?

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  2 роки тому +2

      It's all relative isn't it! I find we don't actually eat half as much salad as I think we will and I end up giving it away! Most seasons the potatoes have run out by Christmas time, but I expect this year we'll have plenty to eat into the new year.
