Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling Teach You Posh British Slang | Vanity Fair - Розваги
“Lots of men rush at each other, violently, and push each other about and it’s fantastically homoerotic and every time I say that to anyone who enjoys rugby, they get very angry. Which I think proves my point.”
Seumas Bracken she’s pleasing to the ears
Same with wrestling/ jiu jitsu
Hence the phrase “rugger bugger”.
@@stereoroid haha😂 rugger bugger? Haven't heard that in yonks 😂😂!
What let's call it rugby
I want to hear Emma Thompson narrate a documentary now
She has narrated several audio books
@@jadedbelle4788 which ones?
@@DannaAMora-ww3dn emma, turn of the screw, northanger abby, nanny mcphee and the big bang and a couple of peter rabbit books. She also narrated a short film called Rang-tan
@@jadedbelle4788 thanks
She also narrated some wildlife documentaries.
I don't wanna live in a world that doesn't include Emma Thompson.
Couldn't agree more...what a fantastic human being she is...
Yes her first class travel then protesting against air pollution is authentic and sums up her true character, sadly.
I ❤️ her
@Al Al And I didn't even know I had a brother!!!
Jay Then you're in luck
* Emma Thompson merely coughs *
Me: HAHAHAHAHA OMG HILARIOUS
@PietreADI 🧐 Are you unwell, or do you just hate Emma Thompson and people who like her and find her amusing?
@PietreADI ...which she is...
Im British but I'm clearly not posh enough.
Jessica B as a Scot I agree
That's because you are not living in the 1950s.
I'm not posh and I understood them all. I thought it was more middle class than posh.
@@memoray_ Correct but this slang sounds like an Enid Blyton boarding school.
@@memoray_ But then all wanted to be posh and used posh words.
I think this went to the mid 1980s, who remembers the "Official Sloane Ranger Handbook"?
"constantly pushing peppermills up each other's.. fundamentalsss.."
Wtf is pushing peppermill? The ef is peppermill?
Pepper mill is a cylindrical object that you put in ungrounded peppers in, then turn it so the pepper comes out grounded down to flakes. Hope that helped. Google could probably help you more. Lol
@@vanessacrissy893 a thing u stick up your bumhole.
I call it 'collective'
I'd have expected vinegar-bottles, I mean, if we're going for typical British.
Perhaps if Emma Thompson were my close friend I would no longer need anti-anxiety medication.
I would buy a lifetime supply of Emma Thompson Elixir!
lool
Don't be so sure about it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You know what? You are absolutely right.. She's a brick, Dame Emma! :P She's very conscientious of what makes us anxious and she manages to make us laugh trough all of it every time
You need a life
Emma Thompson is just simply too posh lol
She is adorable. In a very British way!
Ironically, she isn't actually all *that* posh, relatively speaking. Not like, say, Stephen Fry. If the Queen is 100% posh and Fry is, say, 90%, Emma is about 75-80%. If she was at some event with a bunch of minor nobility types, she wouldn't be considered on a par, socially, with them whereas he probably would be.
@@hux2000 But nobody, even Her Majesty is as posh as Penelope Keith.
Nobody is as posh as Hyacinth Bucket!
She’s not actually that posh
"it's fantastically homoerotic" LMAO
When was this??
I love how Emma construct these sentences. It sounds so original! Gotta love her ❤️🤣
There is only one reason I watch rugby, and it's not for the love of the game...
Emma Thompson is an absolute legend
Emma Thompson is a treasure.
PietreADI Aw, that’s too bad. Why is that? (I was going to say “national treasure,” but I’m not a Brit, so I couldn’t say.)
PietreADI Oh, her movies, sure. I just liked her as a person.
@@brianschwartz5298 She is a treasure here in the UK to a lot of people. PietreADI really isn't speaking for all of us.
@@brianschwartz5298 That's absolutely poppycock!! Her movies are *awesome* and she's incredible in them
She is a loser
dream team i never knew i wanted but im here for it
ricericebaby exactly!
Right?!
I didn't know one could be so posh and so cool at the same time. But then, this is Emma Thompson we're talking about.
"Ryan used me as an object"
And your name is James Howard... how significant. xD
Emma Thompson please keep talking
Let me give you my essence.
Great that the folks behind the camera can't keep it together because of their love for these two ladies
is it just me or Emma sounds more british than usual ? 😁
More droll than anything ..no surprise there considering the nature of this video...make it more absurd than mundane.
She sounds like she's knocked back a few
@@marytocco4180 Well there's always that...and why not? If I had to do a press junket, bring it on...
I don’t think she’s ever sober, but somehow not in a way that’s worrisome lol
@@segamai ...a strictly European trait ..lol!
“pushing that peppermill up my bottom was a perfectly beastly thing to do, algernon.”
guess i’m ready to go to the UK let’s do this
That moment when the video casually roasts you for watching the video
I kinda feel Emma Thompson will play the queen in the last 2 seasons of The Crown. imagine. would be awesome if she nailed it
Emma is pure elegance. I love her so much.
Emma Thompson is an absolute brick ;)
Brick 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“3% of the population in all of the UK speaks Received Pronunciation natively.”
We found one.
Nice accent, don't know why only 3% people sound in RP..
It’s probably more, as 7% go to private school, and there are lots of middle class people who don’t go to private school, but still have decent RP
Mindy and Emma conversing is such a delightful combination. Love it. x
I love the color of Emma Thomson's blouse and coat.
As a Brit I can attest to the accuracy of these definitions, except to add that 'bins' firstly is indeed what we call garbage cans but also, while i'm sure it originated as slang for binoculars, it also extends to glasses/spectacles, which is obviously what makes it more of a household slang term than an obscure one. Also we use 'jolly' as a more whimsical version of 'very', e.g. "I had a jolly good time" or "That banana is jolly large"
It can also mean tipsy or 'happy-drunk' or refer to some kind of outing/excursion/holiday, though that one isn't used very much anymore.
To expand on "jolly hockey sticks" it describes someone with an unnecessary and cringe-worthy level of enthusiasm or positivity and is similar to another slang term, to be "gung ho" (though it is subtly different and would be used in different circumstances). The origin and demonstration Emma gave is entirely correct though xD
I have never heard of jolly hockey sticks or bins used as slang like that in my life. I'm guessing it's not just posh but very geographic based?
And to add to the list that 'jollies' are slang for holidays though tbh I don't know many who actually use a lot of this slang because I'm not 50 😂
@@theyorkrose5274 Haha, yeah jolly hockey sticks is definitely a posh one but also very outdated - I went to a fancy private girls school where they were pretty serious about playing hockey too, and even there idk if i ever heard someone use it - I think I've only heard it in plays or tv shows when there's a character filling the role of 'stereotypical posh old lady' xD As for 'bins', my dad still uses it so it's much more familiar to me, but in fairness he is 65 so... lol
@@krovidae I also went to a private girls' school and played hockey and I have never heard the phrase.
u did it better than emma,
Jolly hockey sticks can mean a posh person. For example "Oh, she's very jolly hockey sticks, her daughters go to public school"
She is so posh 🤣 most of us normal Brit’s don’t say that stuff 😂
I don't use most of these too, don't know what this says about me lol
The fact you used the word stuff emphasises the fact that you use such a restricted language code. Of course you wouldn't use words referenced in said video
@littlesmew lol if only
She's *played* a lot of posh characters.
What’s sad is I am half swiss and half turkish and i knew all of these.I guess I must thank my boarding school and Cambridge University for teaching me useless slang..
That mint on Emma is 🔥 on her.
I absolutly love Emma. Class and un-posh. Best combo ever!
I'm living for the accent
“It’s fantastically homoerotic.” I felt that.
As an English person, no way I would have thought "bins" was short for binoculars lol
Posh people are weird fam. Never thought I'd prefer roadman 😂😂
thank you! maybe its a generational thing cos there are a lot of terms that were shown that ive never used lol
I thought it was a joke lol bins is what the americans call garbage right? I thought emma thompson was just tryna trick mindy🤣
My dad uses it to mean sunglasses
@@Jan-yt2re If they asked me to do it, yeah, I would have said a bin is the equivalent of a trash can for an american
I used to admiringly call strong people of my acquaintance a "brick" until I realized everyone thought I was saying "prick." 0_0
Emma Thompson is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs
being a brick, might be a good solid person, but bricking it, is the opposite reaction.
so a brick would never be bricking it in a situation, because that brick would then be a flake you see.
its a very complicated language.
Every other person seems so boring and vanilla when they are with Emma Thompson. She really is everything. 😀
Professor Trelawney is that you. Wow you look so different dressed as a muggle.
blindstar googly I couldn’t help but giggle 😂😂
😁
I love how she just uses more British slang to explain, making me even more confused
I didn’t know i needed to hear Emma Thompson say ”Yonks” until now.
I’m clearly not posh enough as i don’t use any of these
I use some of those like old bean or beastly when pretending to be posh as a joke. But some of these I haven’t even heard of 😭
The English have the best euphemisms. A little bit of “”how’s your father?”
"Yonks" is short for "donkey's years"
great to know!
- and sometimes the shortening is rendered pointless by saying "donkey's yonks".
Both of them are great! Thank you so much for sharing this.
Wow. Who would have thought they are the perfect pairing I always needed
AAAHHH! Nanny McPhee back at it again with her lessons... ❤️😍😘
Emma Thompson equals all that is good.
Lauren Rhea she's a brick.
Emma Thompson's descriptions are so on the noise and I can always see the examples vividly.
Emma needs to make more videos where she explains things. She’s just so entertaining
"And it looks very homoerotic". Ah, I love you Emma Thompson! 😂
Just the mention of Rowan Atkinson's universal character (Mr. Bean) makes me want to binge watch all of his works.💕
they are so talented omg
I just LOVE their chemistry!
you are being absolutely jolly beastly, algernon! completely blotto! pip pip yonks!
That makes no sense.
What you have said translates as “you are being happy very unpleasant, Algernon! Completely drunk! Goodbye a very long time!”
pip pip cheerio, top of the morning! let me presently and promptly pull out my monocle
red rosé I understand the use of it for Very, but jolly and beastly wouldn’t sit right in a sentence. Absolutely beastly yes, you wouldn’t say absolutely very beastly. The absolute would render the very unnecessary.
Jolly is also used for a someone going off somewhere to have fun.
red rosé no, the point remains absolutely renders jolly (very) unnecessary. You wouldn’t say absolutely jolly beastly. It would still remain absolutely beastly or jolly beastly but not the two together.
@@xPidgexSmithx It's the overkill, isn't it? We like the flourish but we don't like to over-flourish. It's like saying "Peregrine gave the most GORGEOUS bunch of red roses this morning!" as opposed to "Peregrine gave the most DELIGHTFUL, GORGEOUS, FABULOUS, EXQUISITE bunch of red roses this morning!" We get it, you had some pretty flowers as a present. Please stop showboating with our language. Absolutely should only appear in front of the word 'jolly' if it's a sentence in its own right, as in "Absolutely! Jolly good show, old boy!"
Emma is 60 and looks amazing 😍
Perfect two people for this video!!!!! I love Emma Thompson!!!
Living for the posh music in the background
Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter and Emily Blunt are my 3 bestfriends in my own little world
Mood
Oh, may I join in, please? I could bring Gwendoline Christie and Emilia Clarke
I will bring Claire Foy and Olivia Colman to the group
Rugby has just gained a whole new following thanks to Emma Thompson and her wonderfully posh bluntness lol
Thank you for this. You’re amazing! ❤️
Emma Thompson my favorite human being 💜
Emma is stunning and I love Mindy she’s hilarious!
First, I love Mindy Kaling.
Second, I love Emma Thompson.
Emma is an absolute GODDESS. I've loved her forever! AMAZING woman, lovely voice, so talented.
Love how she keeps a straight face.
I live in Cheltenham, England which is pretty posh and I can't say these are commonly used 🤷♀️ Emma is a treasure though Xx
I’m british and clearly not posh as didn’t understand any of these!!! 😂😂😂 Love Mindy and Emma!
I understood only about 3 of these. The rest of them I heard for the first time on this video.
May be they are a bit outdated .
I love Emma Thompson! And I adore her voice and accent. So clean and clear and proper! And there is nothing wrong with a bit of posh! My nephew tells me sometimes that I sound or talk posh occasionally! 😜
Ever since i found Emma Thompson some 20 years ago she has been my favorite actress.
god, i love them both so much
Ohhh Emma Thompson how much can you be loved ?
Perfectly beastly - thanks Emma!! I will add it to my arsenal of royal put-downs
Is Emma just the best? I love her so much.
Its funny how Emma use the words in a full sentences 😂♥️
"They're not cool. They're the opposite of James Dean."
I love Emma Thompson. Such a phenomenal actress.
Emma is the kind of lady you want as a funny aunt and Mindy is the kind you want as a best friend. This is adorable. Can’t wait to see their new movie.
As a Brit.
Bins are trash cans.
Nobody shortens binoculars that I know of.
Forsooth, chap 🎩
Same. But maybe this is for those who play golf on the weekends ? And enjoy foxhunting ? Not sure
But just how posh are you? 😅
Or if you are a cockney, Bins are glasses.
Obviously, but are you so posh that you talk about binoculars in regular conversation? Unlikely. I doubt many people are. However, this video was very clearly about “posh slang” not generic British slang.
I’m a regular Dublin girl and I always say Yonks
Maeve McCann yonks is big here in Canada too
Yeah I’m Aussie and I say yonks
PietreADI I’m not
I love her posh accent. It's such a pleasure to listen to her speaks.
Emma is such a beautiful person. She seems like she’d be marvelous fun to hang out with.
I’ve loved Mindy ever since the Office, and Emma since Nanny McPhee! To see them together is everything 😩 Btw is Mindy engaged?
Can Emma Thompson be my English teacher? ❤️
Tops on my bucket list is having a few bottles of wine with Dame Emma and just listening to her talk...about anything! I love her! ❤️❤️❤️
I LOVE BOTH OF THESE AMAZING ACTRESSES UGH
A jolly means having a good time out. As in "going on a jolly"
Tony Pressley Remember in Mary Poppins the Jolly Holiday song? ☂️🎠
Emma Thompson is a bloody legend of acting, writing, and plain being a brilliant woman.
Absolutely. No question why she's the only person in existence to ever win an Oscar for both acting and screenwriting
Love Emma’s side note on rugby - she’s so right!
I’ve lived in the UK for 4 years and didn’t know any of these words 😂 Also can we acknowledge the fact that Emma Thompson is absolutely perfect??? She’s so elegant, witty and beautiful!
Emma 👑 Thompson
You know you’re not posh when you haven’t heard half of these words being used in the uk😂😂
I love Emma Thompson. I watch all her movies/films!
I love Emma so much...I could’ve watched this for hours
Up each other’s fundamentals... I laughed for at least three minutes. 😂
Ok I'm gonna need to sip my twining tea after watching this.
Stephen Koh PG tips all the way. Only go for twinings if there’s nothing else 😂

Earl Gray I presume.
"Another famous English Bean"... I love Mindy so much😂😂
Her hair looks fantastic!!
As an Australian I knew what a lot of those meant...
TheGuardianOwlet that’s because Australians are English people who got on a boat mate :)
I literally knew like 3 of these and I’ve lived in England my whole life
You need to brush up on your P. G. Wodehouse
But like many Brits these days, you talk like an American. Your use of the word "like" as an adverb gives you away. Before 1980, no one outside of California ever used "like" this way.
I thought the same thing. I only knew 3 of them (^_^;)
I LOVE EMMA THOMPSON TO BITS ❤ GORGEOUS IN THIS MINT SUIT 😘
Thank you, Vanity Fair!!! 💕💕
