    As a Brit I can attest to the accuracy of these definitions, except to add that 'bins' firstly is indeed what we call garbage cans but also, while i'm sure it originated as slang for binoculars, it also extends to glasses/spectacles, which is obviously what makes it more of a household slang term than an obscure one. Also we use 'jolly' as a more whimsical version of 'very', e.g. "I had a jolly good time" or "That banana is jolly large"
    It can also mean tipsy or 'happy-drunk' or refer to some kind of outing/excursion/holiday, though that one isn't used very much anymore.
    To expand on "jolly hockey sticks" it describes someone with an unnecessary and cringe-worthy level of enthusiasm or positivity and is similar to another slang term, to be "gung ho" (though it is subtly different and would be used in different circumstances). The origin and demonstration Emma gave is entirely correct though xD

    • @theyorkrose5274
      @theyorkrose5274 5 років тому +5

      I have never heard of jolly hockey sticks or bins used as slang like that in my life. I'm guessing it's not just posh but very geographic based?
      And to add to the list that 'jollies' are slang for holidays though tbh I don't know many who actually use a lot of this slang because I'm not 50 😂

    • @krovidae
      @krovidae 5 років тому +12

      @@theyorkrose5274 Haha, yeah jolly hockey sticks is definitely a posh one but also very outdated - I went to a fancy private girls school where they were pretty serious about playing hockey too, and even there idk if i ever heard someone use it - I think I've only heard it in plays or tv shows when there's a character filling the role of 'stereotypical posh old lady' xD As for 'bins', my dad still uses it so it's much more familiar to me, but in fairness he is 65 so... lol
