  • Let's take you back to Wellington, the capital city. It is a beautiful, vibrant place, and it even has a massive park called Zealandia, where native species of animals and birds are protected and pest-free. We didn't realise how beautiful and big the park would be right in the city!

    The existence of Zealandia has increased the bird population through out the region...it's good stuff just like your post.

    Another great place is Staglands - It is in Upper Hutt though but it's stunning to walk around and see the animals... Also when you walk through the bird sanctuary they fly up onto your shoulder :) Many more animals too! Love watching you guys.

    What I particularly love about my home country of New Zealand, is that there aren`t big or small "bitey' things. Having lived in Australia for the past 24 years, if it doesn`t bite you or sting you... it eats you! New Zealand only has three venomous spiders: the rare katipō and the accidental introduction of the venomous red back and white-tailed spiders from Australia. As for snakes, large cats and other killers, New Zealand is carnivorous free regarding animals. Just watch out for sharks! 😯

    For those not familiar Zealandia it's within the city of Wellington. Wellington weather is moody af but always beautiful. Roads are crazy Wellington! Yep we a bird country, land mammals were only two small bats until humans. Blue ducks in Turangi by the way... at the swing bridge. Also don't say our birds are stupid (Joe Scott) for walking... death came from the air with the largest eagle the Haast's eagle!

    Nice to see you both enjoyed Zealandia. Their efforts have left a positive impact on Wellingtons biodiversity and conservation throughout NZ as it was the first predator fenced sanctuary in the world. You can easily spend a full day there on a nice day if you are really into birds, I’ve done that many times as a local who visits regularly 😅
    The night tour is definitely worth it if you have the time. You may come across a Kiwi roaming about.

    Did you see the native parrot the Kaka? They are highly intelligent and really entertaining. BTW, I live just below the predator proof fence and regularly see Kaka coming and going from the reserve.

    The breeze is barely moving her strands of hair! What you two have missed is that the whole of Wellington is trees, trees, trees. ALL the hills that surround the city have covered in trees (and shrubs etc). N. Z has no wildlife: no mammals (except rare, tiny bats) -only birds and as they had no predators , many are flightless or ground birds. Then birds are not just in the sanctuary: around our houses too.

    Awesome to see the scale of the Zealandia sanctuary. And very cool to see Tuatara out. They are such a cool anciant lizard and usually only seen in a zoo or similar, and on some remote offshore islands.

    I live 5 minutes away and pop in often for a lunchtime walk. Wild Kiwi are in the hills behind Karori towards Makara. If you go up there about 11pm and sit quietly you'll hear their calls. While you're out and about checkout the glow worms in the woods behind Karori park, up in the north-western hollow right before the skyline track.

    • @geangekate
      @geangekate 27 днів тому

      Or just in the Botanic Gardens or Brooklyn's Central Park... I see lots of glowworms throughout both all the time.
      Btw Glen and Mado, just as a note, your question re whether its overrated or not is up for debate. I'd argue its not quite worth it, depending on if you're a visitor or not. It definitely is amazing, but that's a lot of money - and while in itself it might be worth paying that much for the experience, esp as a tourist, you can actually see just as much and have almost as good an experience just walking round a couple of the different bush areas around Wellington, very close by, for free (ie Otari-Wiltons Bush down the road, in Wadestown). The existence of Zealandia means that you can see most of these birds just flying around Wellington in general, all the time now.
      Also, tui is actually very common to see, you just won't have seen them in your last five months in the South Island. But you see them everywhere in the bush throughout the North Island, just like piwakawaka.

      there is a free walk in wilton bush. called (otari - wilton reserve) five mins down the road from zealandia. beautiful nz plants and trees garden bush walk.. unique. long and short walks. i believe there a bbq area (take snacks) can google a wee map online. can walk up to the skyline walk up on the ridge for the views of the south island on good days. safe good healthy tracks...
      we also have glow worms in wellington. it would pay to google the places around wellington city that you can see them for free at night.. there's some all over the place.. through the dell entrance in kelburn. botanical gardens. etc

    Which comes first, birds or pies? Sing a song of sixpence, A pocket full of rye, Four and twenty Glenbirds, Baked in a pie... When the pie was opened, The Glenbirds began to sing, Wasn't that a dainty dish, To set before the King?... The King was in His counting house, Counting out His money, The Queen was in the parlour, Eating bread and honey... The maid was in Zealandia, Hanging out the clothes, When down came a Glenbird, And pecked off her nose... They sent for the King's doctor, Who sewed it on again, He sewed it on so neatly, The seam was never seen

    Some of our flightless birds can "fly" a few feet off the ground for a very short distance (just a few seconds) in an emergency. And they can often run pretty fast, as shown here: ua-cam.com/video/UQzbx73rb5k/v-deo.html
