      I agree. That Pedal Show has it all... it's humorous and geeky, but honest and educational. I used to watch a lot of Andertons videos before this channel came along, and there's a place for that; but I can't go back and watch them now. Dan and Mick feel like mates I'd like to have, if I weren't a sad, geek Billy No-Mates... ;) Given the choice between documentary and music channels on Sky and TPS, TPS is my choice every time. I've watched some videos ten or twenty times.

    I'm Sean, on my wife's account... but I fix Leslie's all week long and it never gets old... I'm the regional Hammond organ guru, tech, repair guy, who came into the business through guitar. I've always dug the classic Leslie tones, the valve amp in an ACTUAL Leslie, is sublime on a guitar, and breaks up like no other amp. It was the original hi-fi amp for guitar... just coming from everywhere! The 122 and 147 are the big popular, or professional models... using two 6550 tubes and similar drivers... but the 147 seems to have more of a rock reputation... even though the whole thing seems to be very close... 122's you see in a Church often, in pristine condition, 147's you see beat to hell, in a rock band, sounding like a pissed off mashall that's somehow spinning! Other good ones are the 145 shorty, and some solid state ones like the 711, and the legendary ROCKER, the 925!! with a JBL D140 in the bass and some JBL horn driver that literally weighs 20 pounds and has a magnet the size of a paint can! That 925 is one of the few Leslies that can just make you say when... in the old days, the organist had a problem keeping up with the band, especially the guitarist, the Leslie 925 turned the tables and put armageddon at your fingertips! 200 watts of very clean tone, and excellent drivers... it's sound is musical at all volumes, and stays together until there is nothing but Leslie filling the room... like FOUR silver face Twin Reverbs with the JBL drivers... the warmth and slight drive, but complete clarity... Three Dog Night liked the 925 so much, they used it in their back line... for everyone! Guitar had one, keyboard player had TWO and the bassist had TWO as well... Just because, you might as well have the best amplifier in the world... and after that... you might as well make it SPIN... just in case... lol

      Thanks for your insight Sean. I briefly owned a early 70’s Hammond Porta B w/ Leslie it was paired with! Very cool but sold to my pal putting together his dream studio and I used the funds for some vintage guitars before market popped! Been waiting on a procrastinating tech for 6 years to get to fixing a Leslie build around same time frame as Fender Vibratone cabs. But alas, just found a Vibratone for $700 on CL. Played two Vibratone at GC years ago and both broke within 15 mins of playing them😳Have a great tech I work with but also played my pals Vent and ….🤷‍♂️decisions, decisions! Cheers!!

    This is too much to handle. Even as a UA-cam video. This is the sound I have loved and cherished since childhood. You guys are truly the best! I remember growing up reading Guitarist magazine, and the moment Mick did his first demos for them, I remember thinking: 'I hope he plays everything they review from this day onwards'. Such a great guitarist! Dan - your expansive knowledge, geekery, playing and heartfelt reactions are always so entirely spot on. I'm not even in the room, and I want to cry! There's a broken Leslie in a music shop down the road from me. They're not selling it since it's broken. Meh - how hard can it be to fix? I wonder if I can persuade them to part with it... Scratch that. I'll just turn up with a set of piano wheels, and pick a few well-built compatriots, and hope for the best. If anyone at home asks me, I'll just say it's a new fridge, and blame it on you guys. Thank you for the constant inspiration. Best show on the internet! Ever.

I'll pretend I didn't get a new pedal today after watching your videos, and that I'm still rich. Should work a treat! :) I truly hope you guys continue making these brilliant videos! The scrupulous attention to detail from lighting, to meticulously accurate recording and production does not go unnoticed. These shows are such a treat. Long may your viewing, tone-hunting legions continue to grow! Looking forward to the next video!

    What an amazing episode! :-) Just to clarify something about the Leslie being used; the HL822 is a 'Rotosonic' Leslie, which has the normal lower rotor replaced by an oval 6x9 speaker spinning around inside a drum. This is much heavier than the normal bass rotor, so ramps up and down even slower than a Leslie 122 or 147. The pedals are all modelling those classic designs, so it's not quite comparing like-for-like... Anyway, best gear show on UA-cam - keep it up! :-)

    Ah... The bane of my existence! LOL I can't believe I missed this episode! Ever since I first heard Paul Kossoff, Leslie West, George Harrison and even Three Dog Night Leslie guitar sounds in 1969 when I started playing (Electric) I have been overwhelmingly consumed in achieving just the right Leslie sound. Having purchased literally every simulator. At one time I used Motion Sound having both a separate Low and High Rotor cabinets. But I have never really achieved the Paul Kossoff FREE "On My Way" sound that I have dreamed of.

You can see it on your faces guys, this sound has been embedded into our souls (Harrison, Gilmour, SRV, Badfinger, Clapton, etc...) and geeks like us know the reason for it is he Leslie. I've had countless conversations with friends on this very topic for years and it's only been in the past few years pedals have come close to making it at happen. You guys picked the right ones too! I used a small Leslie during the mid '80s, in my bar band days. I had the local PA electrician wire up a 25-foot extension, so that I could place that cab on the other side of the stage. Even from there, the sound went "through" my head as the rotor spun. I got the idea from Zep and especially Frampton, really gave me a leg up on the other players around town.

    Holy Mother of Jebus. That's the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in my miserable life. Ofc we've all heard it on records, but to have it isolated and miced up like that..
    The rotary on my Keeley DS is really nice. It sounds better than many rotary pedals that I've heard.

  • @jakestewartmusic
    @jakestewartmusic 8 років тому +40

    As a keyboardist and guitarist, this is one I've been waiting for and I was not disappointed. Nothing will ever really compare to a real deal Leslie. The Neo Vent sounds pretty impressive if you can't really bring a Leslie to the gig, but it is simply a different effect when it's ran into an amp and not swishing around the room.
    I can't wait to see a similar vibe with amp tremolo vs tremolo pedals. Particularly if you demonstrate amp tremolo with a cranked amp. I found that when I get my Carr Rambler on 10 and engage the tremolo, the effect is so much more pronounced and 3D sounding since I'm getting the OD from the power amp and the tremolo is a tube bias tremolo.

    Back in the early 70s my keyboard player bought a 900 Leslie which was transistorized. Not sure but I think it was the big brother to the one you have there. We had anther Keyboard player friend that had 147s. The difference in sound was very noticeable. Two things the horn driver did not brake in and the bass barrel spun in the same direction as the horns.I fixed that by slightly cocking the barrel motor sideways and crisscrossing the belt. worked fine.The Driver broke in eventually however you can not beat the tube sound. Thanks guys for sharing.

  • @SjoerdHammond
    @SjoerdHammond 6 років тому +41

    Nothing beats a real leslie, by far. The pedals don't even come close to the full rich warm sound of a wooden leslie cabinet. I own a Neo Ventilator because bringing my leslie is way too much of a hassle. It's great, it does it's job, but man when I play on the leslie it's just magical. Play one chord, on the guitar or Hammond organ, it doesn't matter, and you just know instantly that that's it, the thing you want, THE sound. You can't hear it on video or youtube, it's an experience to be experienced in person.

    • @VirtualWoodshed
      @VirtualWoodshed 6 років тому +1

      SjoerdHammond agree 💯. I think it’s a combination of the amp itself, the wooden cabinet, and the opposing Doppler effect you get from the rotors spinning in different directions. The sound literally surrounds you, and if you’ve never experienced it, you don’t know what you’re missing. Here’s a short video I did of my 145 with guitar.

    I engineered at a local studio for a few years and we had a B3 and Leslie- the wood cabinet with slits and the tube amplifier. If you cranked the organ up to full output, that thing would just about blow the windows out. And it sounded absolutely glorious while doing it, too. The pedals are great for what they are, but nothing comes close to a real Leslie.

    Awesome show guys - this is the one I’ve been waiting for! Couldn’t agree with you more about the Neo Ventilator II as well.
    Having owned a rotating speaker cab in the 80’s and 90’s (actually the Yamaha RA-200, identical to the one Gilmour uses) I was in the market for a Leslie sim pedal and eventually settled on the Neo Vent II. The realism and the attention to detail on this pedal is great. As you indicated, there is a row of secondary functions which allows further refinement of the sound. Something also worth mentioning is that the mix controls have two functions. They allow you to dial in how much of the swirling Leslie effect you want and/or the simulated mic distances from the upper and lower rotors. That’s pretty cool to have as a lot of the classic Leslie/rotating speaker sounds that Frampton, Gilmour, Stevie Ray, and Joe Walsh used live where actually blended in with their dry sound so they could control the amount of effect (not just the mic distance) they wanted. Not sure all Leslie sim pedals have this.
    @MIck, If you have the pedalboard space and want to get in and really tweak your sound, I can whole heartedly recommend the Neo Vent II full version rather than the mini for its attention to detail and flexibility. Absolutely a killer pedal and quite easy to use.

      Only man sized (and weighted) gear produces the sound that brings a grown man to tears!
      The physical feel is something you don’t get through UA-cam videos, but when you’re in a room with the Leslie, there isn’t a pedal in the world that can emulate this.
      But for recording, the pedals are absolutely amazing, with guitar, bass and keys.

    HEADS UP - it's CENTER POSITIVE!!! I was so impressed by the Ventilator, I convinced my wife that it would be my early birthday present - I got it yesterday. Just to test it out (two-amps for stereo), I used it standalone with the power supply that came with it - awesomeawesomeawesome. Today, I put it on the board - I use a Truetone CS12 Pro - set the dip switch for 12V, powered everything up and... no sign of life from the Ventilator and my other pedals were doing that pulsing light on-off thing like there was some power fault (I didn't even know that was a thing). I quickly shut everything down, went on line to see if I could find anything and found that the Ventilator is center positive 12V!!!
    My heart sank, thinking I fried my lovely new toy and everything else. I added a polarity reversal connector and gave it a shot. PHEW. All seems to be good.

    I probably use delay and chorus more but Leslie is my favourite effect. But you can’t use it too much because it’s so overpowering. But what a sound. Nothing like a real one but just not practical when pedals can get you in the ballpark.

    Total synchronicity on this guys. My bandleader has been wanting me to get a Leslie simulator pedal for my pedal steel. • @Majik53

    I had a Leslie 900 (two piece cabinet w/100w preamp similar design to the Leslie they have in the video but much bigger) back in the '70s, that was a heavy MF to move everywhere. I spent four months selecting a rotary pedal to replace it more recently and only the Strymon Lex was the one that captured that warm grind just right. Even mono it had more sparkle than the Pigtronix, Boss, or even the official Leslie pedal by Hammond. I tried out about 15 different pedals at the time, spent hours tweaking and swapping and those other three were the closest to that sound. The Neo wasn't out when I was doing the search, otherwise it would have been a contender as well it sounds very well engineered too.
    The specs say that with all controls at midpoint, the Lex is modeled after the Leslie 122.. and to my ears, it nails it.
    Okay, I'm an old fart, but it really has that classic sound like on Badge by Cream, It Don't Come Easy by Ringo Starr, or No Matter What by Foghat.
    It sounded the most 'real' to me. The Strymon Lex also has hidden functions. If you hold down both switches, you can dial in the slow chorus speed, change the mic to front or back, add/cut more warm, tubey drive, and change the speedup/slowdown time. If you hold the left switch, it stops the rotary effect, and you still get that creamy tone through the preamp without any swirl coming out of the center of the stereo field, also a good sound. I use an expression pedal to vary the speed on stage.

      @ThatPedalShow  8 років тому +2

      +Majik53 Cool! As you can probably tell - Mick here - hidden features drive me nuts. But yes, it wouldn't be Strymon if it didn't have a whole load of other stuff. Glad you love it!

    • @Majik53
      @Majik53 8 років тому

      Hi Mick! Thanks for responding, your show is awesome! You two get a bit chatty for my tastes, but still excellent content.
      Yes, it would have been more convenient if those hidden controls were on the front panel, instead of having to stop, bend over, hold two switches down with my foot, and tweak the other settings as needed. Unfortunately that probably would have made an already pricey pedal ($299 US) even more clunky and expensive. Amazing sound, though.
      Keep up the great work, and have a happy!

    • @poshskiffle
      @poshskiffle 7 років тому

      No Matter What is Badfinger btw....But you're right. The Neo is a Boss of a pedal and so is the Lex. Strymon don't make crap! I have a C3 and 145 myself and the sound of playing through the 145 is better than almost anything else in the world. Neo Vent is the closest i've found to it. Tube Leslie distortion is a unique sound.
      Cheers from the USA!

    Because of a weird delay on the shipping for a full sized vent, I ended up being able to a/b it to the Lex. Very similar in many settings, but the lex sounded more like an effect than the Vent. Since I run mono, the ability to mix in dry signal on the full sized Vent is what sold me on it. If you run a wet/dry, the mini vent is probably the way to go and save a few bucks.

    I used to play with a keyboard player that played not only his Hammond through both a 144 and a 147 (both had tube amps), but an original Clavinet through them as well. What a sound! I played my guitar through them occasionally. It was an astonishing thing, I gotta tell you.
    I later (late 70s - pre-SRV) got one of those Fender Leslies, like SRV used. It was nice, but didn't really compare. It sounded decent, but it cut my volume pretty drastically. I ended up pawning it for ridiculously little cash. Oh well, had to make the rent.
    BUT, waiting in a closet, I have the guts - that I removed from a non-functioning transistor Hammond that Goodwill was throwing out - to make another one, just have to make a plywood box to house it in.

    I'm sure everyone would agree that you guys must revisit the Strymon Deco and have a "Creamy Tones Episode". Get that Deco, an EP Booster, etc at the end of your chain and play. Also, how Dan explained in one of the episodes how an Overdrive is like a compressor when turned low. I would love to see that with some drive stacking. Example: The drive pedal at the end of the chain working as a compressor for clean tones and having another over drive punch it when wanting a overdrive. I love going back and rewatching episodes. What a great episode! I have a rotary cabinet! It is an Allen Organ Gyrophonic cabinet. It is loaded with 2 12" Eminence Patriot speakers. The speakers actually rotate - they are mounted on a round portion of the front baffle that is connected to a horizontal shaft. The drive shaft is mounted onto the interior frame by a couple of pillow block bearings. The signal to the speakers are transmitted via a commutator. The cabinet was complete, but no motor. I installed a DC motor and drive for infinitely variable speed. The sound is huge, if a bit more subtle than a Leslie. I have to work on shielding the magnetic field on the motor - the guitar pickups go crazy if I get within 3 feet of the cabinet. But, it really sounds good! It is the size of a clothes washing machine and predates the Leslie system.
    I picked up the cabinet for $5 dollars about 5 years ago, and have been slowly bringing this wonderful cabinet along. Anyway, thanks so much, Mick and Dan!!! I really enjoy your programs.
