"Summer's going fast, nights growing colder / Children growing up, old friends growing older." That line hits home a little harder with every passing year. Life goes by so fast.
I must have heard this song a hundred times before I finally heard it for the first time. Now it strikes me at my core. I think once you reach the age that your kids are almost grown and have lost a couple friends you can finally understand what Neil was saying with this song.
+SFCISME And then to realize that Neil would later lose both his daughter and his wife in the space of 11 months ... I don't know how he could he could retain his composure to perform it again. Except that, after that long and lonely motorcycle journey, he would find rest, turn the page with a new love, and together they would welcome a new child into this world. God bless him and his new family.
This song..... Been a fan of Rush for years, heard this song 1000's of times but tonight was the first time I actually GOT it. (Had to play it three times before I could release some of the emotions it raised in me. Simply...... Amazing.
I can't believe Neil is gone. He and Rush have been such a huge part of my life, and there will never be a better drummer. R.I.P. Neil, the effect you had on music, and this earth, will not slip away.
@@Sugarsail1 Neil thought highly of Steve Gadd; it was a mutual admiration society amongst the greatest. IMO the Mt. Rushmore of greatest drummers would be Rich, Bonham, Moon, and Peart. At the foothills would be Gadd, Carey, Baker, Krupa, Bozzio, Seraphine, several others.
I first listen to Rush in 1975, I was thirteen. I took my son when he was about the same age, maybe 16. Yeah, Neil's lyrics had a huge impact on my life.
43, with kids, grandkids, and aging parents. I miss my brother and sister, I wish I could go back in time to those wonderful moments. But time doesn't work that for us.
My brother in law and my sister saw Rush at Mohegan Sun a few years ago. They said there were two young girls like age 14 who were TOTALLY into Rush coz of their dad, my sister and brother in law said those two girls were the biggest fans at that particular show. Pretty cool that someone your age, let alone being female, can appreciate music from Rush.
We are indeed an Eclectic Group...but we are also courteous and thoughtful......just as Dirk, Lerxst and The Professor are so proud to say about their Fan Base....A Cult as The Ged Man likes to say....Cheers Rush Fans
Listening to this song when "Hold Your Fire" was released, shortly after our second child was born, made me realize that we had DONE LA, and LA was done with us. By the end of the '80s, having played in a rock band and worked as a PR exec in Hollywood, I was pretty rung out. So we sold the house, took the money we'd doubled, and ran ... back home to Arizona where we could pay half as much, in cash, for four times as much home. With plenty of "screw you" dough in the bank to spare and a much saner existence.
This Canadian group was my all time favorite group. Not only did they have diversified music, their lyricism to life is so philosophically true. Neil Peart was a true artist. He was a modest family man as well.He suffered a great loss with the passing of his wife and daughter. Yet through it all he inspired a great many through his music and lyricism from his music. Thank you Neil and Geddy and Alex for helping me and others get through life. For those who appreciate good music, remember this music as a gift to all of us.
Now at 50 this song really hits me hard...."Summer going fast...Nights growing colder...Children growing up...Old friends growing older"...Makes you reflect about everything in your life. ...Thanks Neil!!
My brother died a week ago. This song hit me hard. Always been a RUSH fan. He was a great guy. I see all the great times when I listen to this song. I also see it's time for me to move on and live my life. Thanks Steve. I won't dwell in sadness. I will miss you badly.
"Summer going fast, nights growing colder - Children growing up, old friends growing older. Freeze this moment a little bit longer. Make each sensation a little bit stronger." - I bet this is what was going through Neil's head on his last show, before he announced his retirement. I'll miss the Profressor
I will miss these guys as well. I saw them 3 times in concert. I missed their last series of shows. My niece got to see them on their final tour while she was in Northern California. I didn't get to see their last tour. It doesn't matter though. They will still remain my absolute favorite band of all time. They changed my life.
This is by far my favorite Rush song, I’m not at the age where most people say they really get the meaning of the song but I feel like I can connect to it nonetheless. My dog who I’ve known for most of my life is getting to the point where we’re having to consider putting him to sleep and this song has helped me cope with that to an extent. I know there are people out there going through worse than I am and I just hope they find a way to heal.
Roll the Bones? I understand Free Will.. but Roll the Bones. I've always seen Roll the Bones as a song about how you really aren't controlled by anything. *suddenly has revelation*
Such a brilliant band! I've been listening to them since I was a tender 17 years old. Now at age 56 and have lived a life, I have a much greater appreciation for the incredible lyrics. I saw them waaaay back in 1981.This song reminds me to "Live my life in the moment".
I'm so glad for people like you. Thank you for thinking and for feeling. It's not just about Rush or this song in particular, but the fact that people actually understand. Relieved I'm not alone.
Summer going fast etc Rush got many of us through our younger and difficult years, and they even managed to supply us with music and wisdom as we are getting old. Unbelievable lyrics and music. What a blessing. Thanks you three!
Beautiful song of wisdom. For sooner or later, we all fall down. May we all learn to appreciate one another and to make the most of the minutes in which we shared this experience called "life" with those we love the most! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
THANK you for your time, energy, and effort in uploading these magical songs. In the late eighties and early nineties I heard 2112 constantly and today I would give anything to go back to those days knowing what I know now. Keep on rocking 🤘🏻🎉😎☮️
So many beautiful songs. I would not be alive had I not discovered this music and these words. Thank you Geddy, Alex and Neil for giving me a musical standard to aspire to and the courage to face a lifetime. When music like this ceases to exist, the world is doomed.
The best three man band in the world.. I seen them in 1983 in Frankfort Germany. Nazareth was the opening band ... The German people really know how to party and enjoy great music..
What a powerful tune. The lyrics reinforces the meaning of what it means to be truly human -- to possess the persistence of memory -- to have a loving heart and soul for our loved ones -- be they in Heaven or upon the Earth.
‘Til Tuesday’s Aimee Mann sang backing vocals on Rush’s “Time Stand Still” (1987). In 1988, Geddy Lee stated : “We knew that the part [Aimee] sings on was a feminine part. We didn’t want to use a keyboard or have Alex [Lifeson] or myself sing it, so we started looking for a female singer. It’s a very attractive opportunity for us to work with a female singer. We just looked until we found a voice that was suitable. In listening to Aimee’s last record, we loved the way she sang, so we just asked her.” Lyricist Neil Peart explained : “My first idea was to write about time and the first song I wrote was ‘Time Stand Still.’ But the more I thought about it and played around with the ideas, the more expanded idea of temperamental barriers took shape. ‘Time Stand Still’ applies to that concept in that it deals with the attitude of enjoying life and not letting it whisk by without appreciating it.” 💙🎵💜 May you rest in peace, Neil Ellwood Peart (1952 - 2020)… 🌹
When I was kid, I first heard of Rush when I first heard their song Early distance warning. I also saw their music video. I didnt realize it but I was already hooked on Rush. I have 2 disc album "Gold", all their greatest hits. Rock on, Rush!👍❤😎🎤🎸🎸🎸🎸🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
I was a senior in H.S. when this came out and the lyrics of course make you reflect on the big jumping in the deep end with graduation and getting on with life, the drifting apart of classmates etc. Now 31 years later it really hits, HARD. The passing on of family and friends, the growing up of children, the growing apart of lovers..... Neil must be on another level of existence to write the lyrics he does, the whole band is just on another plane of existence. Thank you Rush, for the great music and great emotions that are inspired by the music.
This is the modern version of a time when you, with anticipation waiting for the new RUSH album. Into the bedroom for intensive study, nobody but nobody disturb....... Every lyric with constant repitation soaking into young minds....... Definitely not a misspent youth.....
Breaks me up. Just moved home to Wales after years away. My dear wife has not moved back with me though. Every line in this song resonates in my soul. RIp Neil
This was a show choir song that my group performed last year and it was my very first solo ever! So far it is my favorite of all our show choir songs ever
I have been a Rush mega fan since the 70's. My boys are also big Rush fans like I am. Some of the best memories I have is listening to Rush and going to Rush concerts with my sons. Doesn't get any better than that. Enjoying Rush with my boys and all the memories are so special to me after one of my sons passed away last year. Specail ti,es and great memories to look back on and cherish. Thabks for the memories boys. I miss you so much Daniel. We will always have our Rush memories.
A nearly forgotten band..best drummer, best bassist..best lead/rythm band ever..Canadian or not..Rush was and still is a band that brought you in..threwyoi thru a tumbler..and you came out sparkling! Lol mass love to the best three man band that made 4-5 man bands jealous!
+Bill Woolfolk I was about to say something similar, losing friends to various things, not making time for the ones we have..As you get older it becomes very relevant. Been a fin since seeing the 2112 tour and every one following till hold your fire.
Neil, your lyrics are so true. I hope to transcend as you. I hope you are looking down on us with your family and hope we understand these lyrics so well.
Your words are so very true. In the arrogance of our youth, we only THOUGHT we knew what the lyrics meant. We had no life experience.....we had no clue. Throughout life you can listen to the same song and it will take on a different meaning. We are different places throughout our lives, which gives us a different vantage point which in turn gives us a different perspective. The take one gets on a song changes with each change of those vantage points. The magic that is music!! Couldn't imagine life without it.
I dunno ... I think that I had this kinda figured out by the time I was in college. I’ve always been a sentimental person, though. So in junior high school, I missed elementary school. In high school, I missed junior high school. In college, I missed high school. Now of course I miss college.
Been a rush fan from the days of the early 90's. Not regretting a second and any second spent with this band was a well spent moment. clicking every video on this channel with my well spent 'Like'.
Listening to this song now feels as if time has been standing still from the first time I listened to it. With the music that today we listen to is as if the innocence has slipped away.
well you know - they don't sound like they're using autotune, that has almost become the single barometer for me of whether a song is good or not - "does the singer sound like a dalek who was obviously made to work on hope instead of being paid?"
When I was 16 I only paid attention to the music, now at 42 I really pay attention to these words written that are so true and I couldn't agree more Please...time stand still!!!
When the band started out, they were more hard rock. Listen to songs like Anthem, Xanadu, the Trees, and A Passage to Bangkok. I think they only later lost the harder edge, and putting more of a new wavish product out. I think their Signals album sorta signaled their left turn into a new direction. LOL. I don't care what direction they headed. It has worked!! This band is incredibly awesome! Sad to see them retire. I never had the experience of going to one of their concerts, but i will always watch videos of them in concert. They are a sight to behold!
Mine also. Also, my dear childhood friend passed away last year. Perhaps one of the biggest Rush fans ever to walk the earth. On my flight back home from his memorial service, I put on my headphones, played this song and closed my eyes. What happened next I will Never EVER forget. He "visited" me. He conveyed several things like " He was all good. and it is all real" (Heaven). He told me to slow down like the song implies, cherish life. I must add, he did all of this with no words spoken. Impossible for me to explain. This is... a great song.
What a beautiful song. So true... it makes me tear up every time I really listen to the lyrics. It is good to be reminded that we are only here for a flicker.
I find myself in the very exclusive club of people who’s ship ran aground, waited for the tide to come around, and actually quoted this song in the meantime.
Neil, I realize that in life you were very modest about your ability to "hit things with sticks", but you were and always will be the best at not only hitting things with sticks but your way with words as well. You made books cool...I thank you for that and everything else. I couldn't forget you if I tried. Rest easy brother.
Yup I know that feeling, my father almost died of an overdose in 2008 but he's never going to be the same ever again. But like you said you "freeze" the moments you had with them.
Aah....a never ending longing to hold onto the ever fleeting moment! One of my Rush favorites!! "Freeze this moment, a little bit longer!" 2:41 Geddy's bass! O.M.G!!!
First time I heard of Time Stand Still was in the early 2000's.but i could of not help it.but the female guee back upvvicals is Amee Mann of Til Tuesday .sweet voice.
The average age of the band members was about 35 when this song was written. The true measure of a songwriter is the ability to compose lyrics that apply now, and in the future. Neil and company were true masters of their art!
"Summer's going fast, nights growing colder / Children growing up, old friends growing older." That line hits home a little harder with every passing year. Life goes by so fast.

Without question 🙂

This song really captures the relentlessly fleeting nature of time, and how you wish you could just "freeze this moment". A Rush classic.
So hard to hold back the tears, Neil was so right..if only we would freeze those precious moments that slip away so fast!

You can try, but they still slip away much too quickly. ♥️🙏🏻🙏🏻

I've actually used Rush songs in my ESL classes.
And on the seventh day God said,"Let there music that will please all the universe" and He created 'Rush', and it was good, and He was pleased.
+ToeKnee Cal Do you realize that Rush are atheists? Roll the bones and Freewill are prime examples of this.
I did not know that about 'Rush' however, God created them nevertheless. Thanks for the info though.Peace out.

After Neil's passing these lyrics are more profound and more emotional than they were years ago 😢
If I could slow it all down,
💜 R I P.
Neil
Been a rush fan from the days of the early 90's. Not regretting a second and any second spent with this band was a well spent moment. clicking every video on this channel with my well spent 'Like'.
Perfect song..
Listening to this song now feels as if time has been standing still from the first time I listened to it. With the music that today we listen to is as if the innocence has slipped away.
Not only did the world lose a great drummer with the passing of Peart, it lost a great modern poet, story teller, and even philosopher.
I agree Roman, that is what is so special about Neil Peart man !
The feeling he transmits is powerful !
just another gem that STANDS THE TEST OF TIME... so amazing still today and sooo much better than what we are subject to on the radio right now!!!
+SongAid well you make a valid point... i will have to see about making some adjustments songaid!!!
well you know - they don't sound like they're using autotune, that has almost become the single barometer for me of whether a song is good or not - "does the singer sound like a dalek who was obviously made to work on hope instead of being paid?"
that's why I don't listen to radio anymore.
This song just taught me a valuable lesson. Thank you Rush.
When I was 16 I only paid attention to the music, now at 42 I really pay attention to these words written that are so true and I couldn't agree more
Please...time stand still!!!
This song has always driven straight into my soul only to grab the young man I was and give him a hug. Now I am the one grown older.
I've been listening to Rush my entire life
not too many "metal" bands can make a grown man cry
Rush isn't really metal...
more prog rock isn't it
Yeah, Rush is prog rock.
You forgot la villa strangiato and rush in 96 in test for echo did a bit of heavy metal song like half the world and test for echo
In my life I have seen Rush about 15 times, and everytime they hit it out of the park. Absolutely incredible.
Germany 1984.. The best three man band ever!! 😊👍👍
This will be the song played at my funeral.\
Wow some people can really talk some bollocks.
Dude, chill!
What a beautiful song. So true... it makes me tear up every time I really listen to the lyrics.
It is good to be reminded that we are only here for a flicker.
Neil was a genius! No band has the quality of Rush! Never negative !
I find myself in the very exclusive club of people who’s ship ran aground, waited for the tide to come around, and actually quoted this song in the meantime.
Another one of my favorite songs!! Rip Neil you were the best drummer and song writer
just lost my dad, so this song is hitting pretty hard right now
Sorry for your loss... I just lost my Gecko
I lost my Dad on April 25th of this year. This was his favorite song of all time. I understand how you feel, sorry for your loss.
I’m sorry for your loss.
May he Rest In Peace 🙏
Neil, I realize that in life you were very modest about your ability to "hit things with sticks", but you were and always will be the best at not only hitting things with sticks but your way with words as well. You made books cool...I thank you for that and everything else. I couldn't forget you if I tried. Rest easy brother.
Great song very underrated!!
Yup I know that feeling, my father almost died of an overdose in 2008 but he's never going to be the same ever again. But like you said you "freeze" the moments you had with them.
Such an extraordinary band. No matter what the song or album, whenever I listen to them, I am overcome by strong emotions.
Musical Utopia… simple as that… The 3 Kings ❤️
Aah....a never ending longing to hold onto the ever fleeting moment! One of my Rush favorites!!
"Freeze this moment, a little bit longer!"
2:41 Geddy's bass! O.M.G!!!
An amazing bass run.
I’ve been listening to Rush for 40 years and will continue to listen as long as I live or die lol.
RIP Neil Peart.
Anyone NOT comprehending the depth of this song is truly lost!
Im reflecting on my life tonight . This song means more to me as i get older.lost friends memories of my youth. This is truly a deep song!
In 1992 this song changed my life. Literally. Not hyperbolic. For the better of my soul.
First time I heard of Time Stand Still was in the early 2000's.but i could of not help it.but the female guee back upvvicals is Amee Mann of Til Tuesday .sweet voice.
Freeze this moment a little bit longer
Make each sensation a little bit stronger
Experience slips away
Experience slips away - Wow those lyrics ❤🥰
A year has passed since you wrote that comment. Wring everything you can out of each day. You never get them back 🤘
The average age of the band members was about 35 when this song was written. The true measure of a songwriter is the ability to compose lyrics that apply now, and in the future. Neil and company were true masters of their art!
