  • Lent Week #4- Nadia Bolz-Weber | Grace and the Cross
    The cross sits at the center of our faith, and yet our understanding of what exactly happened on that cross remains conflicted and confusing. Was Jesus our proxy? Th e payment? The only way to appease an angry God? Nadia Bolz-Weber reminds us that our theories about the cross tell us as much about ourselves and our view of God as they do about Jesus and salvation.

    Well done Nadia and beautiful presentation! I see the Sanhedrin has showed up in the comments section and don't understand the different theories of Atonement and believe penal substitutionary is the only one to be a Christian.

    A good explanation of the cross. We all have scars. Thank you Nadia.

      Life is suffering and the Christian god is 'love' of it. That's always what these ghastly cults of Christianity have always pushed.

      GOOD MESSAGE?!!! how? she uses one straw man after another, after another. she literally cannot speak words of truth but only lies both in the way she pretends to represent other's beliefs and they way that she pretends to describe the story of Scripture.

    So Nadia, basically you are saying YOU KNOW BETTER than Isaiah or Peter...
    Isaiah said : Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
    yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
    5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
    the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.
    6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
    and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.( Isaiah 53: 4-6)
    Peter said: “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”( 1 Peter 2:24) prepare to stand before Jesus and answer for your lies you apostate.( Matt. 7:23). Do something useful with your life and stop trying to lead people astray from the truth by perverting Biblical doctrine.

    I think she raises some really good points. She definitely reminds me of Karl Bart, in that "God is totally different", and I know very little about him.
    But I think it's also important to stand by the traditional, Lutheran, penal substitution theory. Not that God punished Jesus for our "no nos", but that Jesus swallowed up the evils of this world that we're consuming us. It's fair that Jesus paid for our sins and debts and misbehaviors, because in doing so, he didn't free a gang of monsters. He freed us from slavery!

    The traditional atonement theories are so off, and have "lost the plot".
    Viewing Christianity through the lens of history, it is easy to see how the powerful church fathers twisted the story to shame the people, and keep them dependent on authority figures.
    Thank you for speaking truth to power, which is THE truth of Christ's life and redemption.

    I sad to see so many people think she is valid. She is out of her mind and only those that have never read the Bible with agree with her. And it looks to me that non of them know the Bible.

    Her fundamentalist church “didn’t have much need for smart mouthed girls”… this is her problem: it’s ALWAYS about her. Supremely concerned not about her faith or the object of her faith… but of herself. God doesn’t need you (or me). But loves us regardless and demands that WE conform our will to His. Not finding some opportunity to constantly shoehorn ourselves into every single thing.

    Shame on you ! God hates sin but loves the sinner. God”s love is unconditional!
