Many years ago, my Dad dealt with religion with a significant outburst. An uncle of his passed away. During the service, the pastor began bad mouthing the uncle as being a "Bad Christian ect ect ect". That uncle didn't go to church and according to that pasture, that made him an unholy man and a bad person. According to Dad, his next oldest sibling and his Mother each put hands on him in an attempt to calm him down and keep him from making a scene. Their efforts failed. Dad knew the uncle well and knew he was a religious man, after all, an ALL KNOWING GOD doesn't need you in a specific building or paying the clergy in order to know your heart. Dad blew up, shouted his peace at the pastor, and stormed out. Dad says he has not been religious since then. I have my own reasons for not being a religious person. Despite my devout catholic mothers best efforts. I can understand Missy's response to the idea of religion and the situation she is responding too.
An open casket is only appropriate during “visitation”. It would have been closed during a church service. During the service, the casket would have been covered with a funeral cloth called a pall. If George had been in the service, the pall would have been replaced with a flag when the casket was closed and as it exited the church.
@tmitch1950 It varies according to the religion and denomination. It is not unusual--especially 20 or 30 years ago--for the casket to be open during the service, especially in Baptist or non-denominational churches in the Southern part of the US. It is up to the family's decision. In addition, not all denominations cover a casket with a pall/cloth. A pall symbolizes the baptismal gown, but not all denominations who baptise as infants use a pall/cloth over the casket.
