  • This week, we're experimenting with the exciting and intricate GINA Smart Coffee Instrument, optimising a recipe to best fit our own coffee.
The GINA Smart Coffee Instrument is a relatively young piece of gear, funded with the use of Kickstarter back in 2016. The design combines several known elements, namely a cone-shaped dripper alongside a locking mechanism enabling the user to utilize both percolation and immersion when brewing their coffee.
The GINA even comes with extra additional tools enabling the user to make cold-brewed coffee too, although we're not utilising that particular function in this weeks video.
Join us as we explore what you can expect to find when brewing with a GINA, as well as suggesting a recipe we find works particularly well when pairing the Chemex and April coffee together.
You can replicate the recipe featured in this video by using the following guidelines:
    20g - 300g
    94°C Water
    100g Circle - 0:00 - 0:10 (Valve is Closed)
    100g Circle Pour - 1:00 - 1:10 (Valve is Open)
    100g Circle Pour - 2:00 - 2:10 (Valve is Open)
    Total Brew Time - 3:30
We used a Commandante grinder, on a medium grind setting for this brew. We suggest a grind range on Commandante set between 43-45 clicks.
If you have any questions about this brew method, feel free to leave your queries in the comments section below.

I’ve wondered how the Ceramic December Dripper with the Big hole brews compared to the April Brewer and a HarioV60. Could you do a video about this specific Ceramic December Dripper? Thanks.

Hi Patrik, do you have an opinion on coffee freshness/degassing? I've heard before that "resting" is a myth, and that the fresher the coffee the more vibrant the flavors will be, however you will have to bloom longer or grind sooner to allow for the extra CO2 to degas. Other people say that coffees taste best after 5-7 days of resting. What's your experience on this? Cheers

We always recommend resting the coffee for at least 5 days from the roast and find that our coffee often tastes the way we want to start from 14 days after roast.

Hario Switch gives better draw down and so increases controll over Immersion and drip part. And it's much cheaper.
