The 2011 tsunami was an event that was mostly over in less than 30 minutes, while the storm surge from a major storm like Katrina was measured in hours. Also, Atlantic hurricanes that strike the Gulf or Atlantic Coasts hit areas that are low lying, with no nearby mountains for refuge like in Japan. For example, Katrina's storm surge went as much as 10 miles inland in Mississippi. The highest storm surge on record was 13 meters, (43 ft.( in the Pacific, in 1899 in Australia, Tropical Cyclone Mahina. By comparison the 2011 Tsunami reached 40.5 (133 ft.) meters in places, with many towns that had 40 foot seawalls be over-topped. The great Tohoku earthquake and tsunami was literally a 1000 year event. However, there are many places in the US that are also at risk for tsunami activities. It is interesting to note how differently the waves behaved the second time around. The water was so loaded with sediment it is much denser and moves slower but with more power. This is why it knocked that wall down so effortlessly. Also of course the foundations were undermined by that time, but you can clearly see the water is thick and black. I’ve watched this video many times over the years and I just wonder if anyone has any additional information on why the safety wall failed. Was it just the “over topping” or was there actually a section failure? Thankyou
In the end that zone got flooded when the huge portion of the wall went down. Before that the water was going above the wall but not so much, it was starting to decrease the level until it fell...and then came the second wave which basically made the wall useless.
I salute the Japanese people they are so resilient. You are in my prays. I am so sorry what your country has gone through. My best wishes, from New Orleans, Louisiana.
===== This is one of the most impressive videos showing the nature of tsunamis, from the crest of the wave inundating everything, to the entire bay emptying out with the arrival of the trough. It didn't deserve so many negative inputs. =====
I suspect that the negative votes are for the careless videography (jumping back and forth, missing the crucial moments when the tsunami overtops the wall, and then when it breaches the wall, while viewing the opposite hill or housetops where the action is NOT happening), and for the lack of editing out the parts that jump around, or are out of focus, etc. For my part, I didn't down-vote it, but I can understand why some folks would.
Thanks to whoever produced stabilised version of this video. Even with stabilisation it is disorienting to watch with camera being all over the place place. Understandable given the circumstances.
Witnessing the absolute destruction of the communities entire fishing fleet and the sea wall defence being overrun by the wave that swept entire buildings from their foundations before shattering them into a debris field must be extremely traumatic for the survivors! Even more disturbing was seeing complete buildings being dislodged and swept out to sea when the wave receded, likewise, cars were caught up in the maelstrom, and it must be considered that unfortunate victims may have been inside, unable to escape! The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force deployed teams of Divers to search houses which had been swept into the harbour and lay wrecked on the seabed! It was utterly surreal to see these Divers search in a kitchen, amid cups, bowls and a rice cooker of a house that lay on the harbour floor! These missions were particularly hazardous as the house wreckage was unstable and contained many entanglement hazards. People across the world like to live in coastal communities, however, this tsunami graphically displayed their vulnerability to such natural events! Thank you for this video, it reminds viewers that this tragedy occurred to everyday ordinary people just like themselves!
Seaman E9: This was the most photographed earthquake/tsunami in history. Many people in Japan have an app on their cell phones for civil defense warnings. The earthquake came with little warning. The tsunami sirens warned people immediately to get to higher ground. There was no time to "make sure your family was safe" etc.

From 19:58 the camera man are more concentrated and steady because he films from a higher place alone up stairs in a House and is not distracted by the people around him and at 21:46 check out how the sea Wall collapses and the little car is catapulted by the pressure of the sudden water surge. All videos from this day are important documentation. By watching them you learn a lot of things that can help yourself in a future catastrophic event. You understand the value of video documentation and sharing. You understand the importance of fast evacuation and in this case I learn how people around you are a comfort but distracting and the camera is sailing around and about. But then I closed my eyes and listen how the people are commenting and calming Down a whoman who is crying. No one is getting angry but they are together helplesly watching mother Nature in action. You are With a surviver who did his best to document this event. Then after he runs upstairs in a House he gets some really good details on the power of water.
@@armandofernandez8257 Agree Amando, This must be the worse filming clip of this Tsunami with the moving of the camera. Someone had to be the worse. I guess he is nervous as he should be. So many took this Tsunami warning casually and died because they stay in the low lands. Japanese are trained to move to higher ground after an earthquake. Specially a big one. Many delayed their escape to higher ground. SAD
I'm sure, as the camera man watched on in abject terror, the thing most at the forefront of his mind was just how well he maintained the in view camera shot!! FFS! 🤦🏻♂️
My heart breaks for all those impacted but that poor woman crying just melts my heart. I just want to hug her and assure her that things will eventually be ok.
Coming up on 10 years since this tragedy. Almost 20,000 souls perished or missing, but any other country and that would have been 200-500 thousand. Preparedness is important and Japan leads the world in this. I would urge anyone that lives in a coastal area, and especially in bays and inlets to have a first rate evacuation plan for the entire family. If you cannot evacuate in 15-20 minutes - the odds of surviving decrease. This was heartbreaking and I can only hope they rebuild even better.
Excitement can cause your eyes, brain, hands and all to go crazy trying to film history. So sorry for your loss, even after all these years.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Mr. Asamu, forgive the people on this board who write about video production qualities. They are ignorant. The tragedy is unspeakable. The grief untold. Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in the US killed 2,000. This tsunami killed 20,0000. I am so sorry for your country.
This was violent and sad to watch, there were gates in the wall which collapsed under the force of the water and even concrete buildings which did survive more or less in most places are right out destroyed here behind the wall. From the waterline on the hills I estimated a flood of up to 20 meters high?
It's not the quality of the picture, or the sound....the problem is the cameraman unintentionally gives the viewer a major headache by being so distracted that he can't focus on rarely staying more than 5 seconds on any given shot. Having said that, this was obviously a life changing event for him personally, as well as the people of Japan. Very sad.
Did you notice the house that got washed out there sitting next to that wall when it fell over, then get totally obliterated when the wall fell over after the explosion of water that hit it.
@@donnalynch1484 I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to say here? You mad because the person filming was watching their world get ripped to pieces, and couldn't hold a steady camera? It's been 6 years since I made this post, and you call me back to it to complain?
Incredible the height of the water how many were swept away thinking they were safe behind the sea wall ,,without people filming this tragedy we would never have known just how bad it was ,
Although it apparently didn't happen here, for some reason this made me think of the many people who took refuge in buildings they thought were safe - and which might have even been designated tsunami evacuation locations - and then watched the water getting higher and higher, realizing suddenly that they were trapped and could not escape because they were going to be completely submerged, and they were going to drown. Horrible.
Here again we see a clear example of how a tidal wave recedes and then hurls inland, several times. First the water flows out, then in, over and over again. In New Zealand the residents told me that when the were hit with one (tidal wave=tsunami), the first thing they noticed was that all the water in the bay rushed OUT. Then IN came a big one. This happened several times. So when you see water rushing OUT towards the sea (and I hope you never do), that's nature's way of warning you: Head for the hills! (literally!) Get away from the coast!
All joking aside That is stabilizer abuse! . Great courage and remained cool in this earthshaking axis tilting event to all tsunami victims alive and dead love from Texas
At 3:04 to watch the sea play games. Thinking it was over and then more tremors and another surge. It won't let go. Did i see wrong or was there a third very flat, deceptive wave?
You have some of the most unbelievable footage unfolding right in front you and you're recording the hill and rapidly recording from side to side. What a waste. I wanted to see how quickly it reached its highest level. We can learn alot from good footage of the true destruction such a powerful tsunami can cause. My deepest condolences to the victims of this very sad tragedy
It's a good thing that this video went through an image-stabilization program because it would've been pretty much unwatchable otherwise. Obviously this man wasn't able to pay attention to what he was aiming his camera at, in midst of all this trauma.
Why did the cameraman not focus in the water flowing below ?? All I can see are the bridge and home situated in the higher hill above that have no any change on them.
To everyone complaining about the picture quality: I'm sure you've all got high-quality video setups prepped and ready on two minutes' warning to document the next big disaster that hits your hometown. Maybe you carry them around with you so that you'll always have them to hand, because you never know when disaster will strike, eh? And I'm sure you'll be calm and professional cinematographers with steady hands filming away as your home gets levelled and your neighbours die and you don't know yourself whether you're going to live to see another dawn. No? All you've got is a mobile phone with video capability, your own anxious and unprepared hands, and nerves of protoplasm just like this guy here? Then you probably would do no better. Shut up.
+Arkadia Moon I totally agree with you, but, I think that early videos of tsunami were filmed in better resolution, and secuels are taken from youtube and re-uploaded with other users, losing image quality. I said that because i've seen these same videos in better quality years ago.
Arkadia Moon.... you are an absolute idiot!!! Have you not even bothered to watch all the other Tsunami videos???????? They completely disprove your pathetic, clueless comments.
My prayers go out to all affected by this tragedy. I appreciate the content of the video and thank you for posting; however, its unstabilization is giving me motion sickness. I made it to 11:53 and had to exit.
Absolutely incredible. I'd like to know the height difference from the lowest point to where the water drained out of the bay to the top of the where the water flowed over the wall...I think it would be an incredible amount. It's just hard to imagine the whole bay being drained like that and it would be so unreal if it had not been captured on camera.
Whoever did this video thank you you’ve captured the absolute horror and terror of this situation .Still praying for those who lost so much ! Not the things so much as safety and relationships.
What's sad, thought understandable, is the guy kept the zoom on (you never search with the zoom active), and he missed nearly all the key shots - however, again, considering what was going on one can understand that the zoom on the camera was the last thing on his mind.
At 19:35 he is indoors and there is a something that sounds EXACTLY like someone chambering a round in a firearm. Its the distinct metallic snap of the slide or bolt of semiautomatic weapon being chambered. But firearms are almost totally illegal in Japan.

I’ve watched this video many times over the years and I just wonder if anyone has any additional information on why the safety wall failed. Was it just the “over topping” or was there actually a section failure? Thankyou
Heart Wrenching Stuff... The engineering of that wave wall was amazing, I don't think almost anyone could have predicted the water would go that high.
In the end that zone got flooded when the huge portion of the wall went down. Before that the water was going above the wall but not so much, it was starting to decrease the level until it fell...and then came the second wave which basically made the wall useless.
Juan José Del Pino Rivas I guess the second wave is always the worst

Hopefully you are all recovered now. That was a very scary time and devastating for your town .
Is this the worst tsunami, i get the bad filming he’s to upset
House way up high you would think you’re safe( and you were) but it got to your door step
This tsunami hit the first town 29 minutes after the earthquake. It was traveling at 360 miles per hour. Pretty hard to outrun it.
What a beautiful place and what a terrible thing to happen to everyone and their houses.

Interesting but sad clips. :( Thank you posting this.
Worst video ever
@@edwardalamo2507 I like.
Such an awful, awful event. I hope all who made it through are recovering mentally as well as physically. It must have been so hard to witness. The cries of the people, just heart rending. Much love to you all. x
Very well said! I agree with you 100%
We r lucky to see all this video if u compare tsunami in year 2004, especially in Acheh, Indonesia 🇮🇩 no one able to video it bcos most of them had been disappeared

Nice job stabilising. Lot of work. Hours.

That little neighborhood was particularly lucky. I guess the seawall was just high enough.
At 21:30 a wall of cyclopeon scale is pushed over like children's building blocks. The blocks CRUSH a nearby house completely. Terrifying!!!
Yeah you're right! So powerful and terrifying
Look again carefully when the sea wall collapses. It's not a car, but a small house that is in the path.
@@michaeldean5202 wow it's hard to see, but that is definitely a little house
I for one am thankful for the stabilization editing. What city was this? I’ve watched many of these videos and do not recognize this location.
How can u tell anything he's going around in circles
@@armandofernandez8257 Agree Amando, This must be the worse filming clip of this Tsunami with the moving of the camera. Someone had to be the worse. I guess he is nervous as he should be. So many took this Tsunami warning casually and died because they stay in the low lands. Japanese are trained to move to higher ground after an earthquake. Specially a big one. Many delayed their escape to higher ground. SAD
This is in Kojirahama Bay, Tonicho Town, Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture.

The force of that tsunami was mind blowing 🤯
Excitement can cause your eyes, brain, hands and all to go crazy trying to film history. So sorry for your loss, even after all these years.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

After watching dozens of these 3/11. Videos this one could have been one of the best.
Mr. Asamu, forgive the people on this board who write about video production qualities. They are ignorant. The tragedy is unspeakable. The grief untold. Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in the US killed 2,000. This tsunami killed 20,0000. I am so sorry for your country.
20,0000?
Well spoken.
I'm sure he was really upset. Duh. So much drama coming from a beta boy like you.
@@Mucho-Taco 15,899 according to Wikipedia. 2,529 still missing. That's almost 20,000.

This was violent and sad to watch, there were gates in the wall which collapsed under the force of the water and even concrete buildings which did survive more or less in most places are right out destroyed here behind the wall.
From the waterline on the hills I estimated a flood of up to 20 meters high?
The sheer force of Mother Nature. Before I finished wondering whether that sea wall could retain that tide, it was breached.
Very sad.
(21:45) - OMG the force of the water actually pushed that giant cement barrier over!!! That thing probably weighed several thousand tons!!!
Did you notice the house that got washed out there sitting next to that wall when it fell over, then get totally obliterated when the wall fell over after the explosion of water that hit it.
This is the second video where you can clearly hear at least one large jet flying over.
yes that is what jets do, they fly over.
I can't hold a steady hand, even when not terrified. I would be terrified here. My heart continues to ache for Japan.
Not an excused
@@donnalynch1484 I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to say here? You mad because the person filming was watching their world get ripped to pieces, and couldn't hold a steady camera? It's been 6 years since I made this post, and you call me back to it to complain?
I had no idea how really horrible this was. I feel so much pain for the Japanese people. Lord be with you.

Thanks for stabilizing that video - mut be hard to follow otherwise
It's heartbreaking to see this video..God bless Japan..I was in Tokyo 2004..experienced some earthquakes there too .
The rapid to a fro movements are making nauseous.
He just copied the video from another person. You can see it on the covered date.
So sad for the people - that aside you wonder where all the stuff being washed away ends up - some may get washed ashore thousands of miles away
Thank you for stabilising the footage.
How far into the video does he stabilize it?

Yeah, absolutely not.

Why did the cameraman not focus in the water flowing below ?? All I can see are the bridge and home situated in the higher hill above that have no any change on them.
tanyavit tantakasem What emotions do you think he is dealing with as he watches this? Insensitive jerk.
A huge event like this and he's filming buildings? Or cars & people clearly beyond the reach of the waves. I need a Dramamine now.
I pray they rebuilt further up the mountainside
Can't see anything. The person with the camera is all over the place, even up in the trees!
so annoying.
Super stupid cameraman,,,🤣🤣🤣
Shut up.
You should ad the aftershocks!
+Arkadia Moon I totally agree with you, but, I think that early videos of tsunami were filmed in better resolution, and secuels are taken from youtube and re-uploaded with other users, losing image quality. I said that because i've seen these same videos in better quality years ago.
Allah Akbar!!! Eat more bacon!!!!
Arkadia Moon.... you are an absolute idiot!!! Have you not even bothered to watch all the other Tsunami videos???????? They completely disprove your pathetic, clueless comments.

Is there a version of this video with English subtitles?
Why would there be sir?
My prayers go out to all affected by this tragedy. I appreciate the content of the video and thank you for posting; however, its unstabilization is giving me motion sickness. I made it to 11:53 and had to exit.
Judy G. Don’t be an asshole for no reason
At 6:00 it looks like the sea wall finally gave up...
That's more than 15 meters actually, or it might even reach more than 20 meters... Just look at the height of the eroded hill at 24:12
Whoever did this video thank you you’ve captured the absolute horror and terror of this situation .Still praying for those who lost so much !
