  • Bill Viola presented his lecture as the 2009-2010 Una's Lecturer at the Townsend Center for the Humanities, UC Berkeley. Over the past 35 years, Bill Viola's pioneering work has been instrumental in the establishment of video as a form of contemporary art. Rooted in modern life yet often evoking age-old religious philosophies and visual iconography, his work addresses universal human experiences such as birth, death, and the unfolding of consciousness. Viola's videos, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, and flat panel video pieces are often presented as total environments, enveloping viewers in image and sound.

Bill just kills me. My head and heart blows out watching his work. His words are also amazing here. A master in a new medium.

I cried like a little baby watching this, literal weeping in a deep stare at the screen. A higher state of artistic mastery. Thankyou

Very impressive and I would like to thank Bill Viola and UCBerkelyEvents for sharing this lecture. I used it in class and students were impressed and silent at the end. Central statement I used was "The two forces that have done the most to shape who we are as human beings, both inside and out and throughout history, are technology and revelation." It can be found at 16.30 min.

Wow. I first became familiar with Bill Viola in the eighties. Of all the video artists, he's been my favorite. The triptych piece with the birth and death, is one of the most powerful video art pieces I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Thanks Bill.

I'm fortunate enough to know the top three video artists in St. Louis. All three have had shows internationally. Van McElwee, Zlatko Cosic, and R D Zurick.
