You talk about the acting being so good; it really really was. The actress either had a stillbirth or consulted with someone who had. I have had one. That moment when Hildegard told her the baby was stillborn, I know that moment. There's a moment when you. just. know. For me it was a nurse saying there wasn't a heartbeat. They thought maybe their machine was faulty, but I knew. But the scene with her holding the baby for hours, that REALLY got me. I held my little boy for four hours before the nurses were forced to take him. She wasn't crazy or in a trance, the act of letting someone take the baby makes the loss real and final. Those hours are the only time you have with your baby, the only ones you'll ever have. VERY hard to go through. Pregnancy loss in shows and movies is always hard for me, but the acting was so good here that I'm going to find it difficult to rewatch this episode.
@@alexachipman thank you. I cried. Not a few tears and sniffles, sobbing. You seem to use other movies and shows to relate to what you're watching; two movie clips hit home for me when it comes to losing my baby. One is, obviously, King Theoden using the line 'no parent should have to bury their child', which was actually said to the actor by a woman who had lost hers. The second is from Ten Commandments, where Moses' mother is saying her arms ached to hold him. That's what I went through when we left the hospital, my arms were so empty they ached. Loving your reactions! I read the books long before the show came out, in fact my teenage daughter is named after Bree. I never got around to watching the show until now, so I'm watching a few episodes and then reactions to them. Yours are wonderful, I love the tidbits of random info! Reminds me of my best friend, she is a fount of information on the most random subjects as well and I love it.
Alexa at the start of the episode- "Yay! Jamies daughter!" Me- "...and that's the last time you're gonna smile this episode. Now they're gonna beat you with a sledgehammer". Ooof! Rough one.
It feels very weird to say that I liked having this kind of emotional response to a TV show, since it was so devastating, but I think it show how high-quality the show is. If the writing/acting/etc isn't the best, we would not be sobbing our eyes out over it! I love that it makes me cry!
Lovely, heartfelt reaction. I think this episode is exquisite from start to finish: the acting, writing, directing, set design, music but I don't watch it often unless I'm in the mood for a good cry. Even watching along with you in snippets it got to me. On to Scotland!
Did you know that there is also a movie with the title "Outlander"? It has nothing to do with the show but is a very underrated SciFi/Fantasy movie that appears to be virtually unknown. I remember buying the DVD purely out of boredom without knowing anything about the movie. But I was in for an extremely positive surprise and it turned out to be a film I watch relatively often without getting tired of it. Among others Ron Perlman and John Hurt play parts in it. Anyways, as for this show I actually needed a while until it grew on me. I don't even know why it didn't interest me all that much from the beginning as I love Scotland, history and this little bit of "magic" the show adds.
@@alexachipman There are actually two movies with the name Outlander: a space movie with Sean Connery and another with the odious Jim Caviezel (sorry if he's a fave).
Now we're heading back to Scotland, I can say the time in France is my least favorite part of the show. Not that it's badly made or boring, but there's so many painful moments for Jamie and Claire, and it is a bit monotone in a show that is ever-fluctuating. So I'm excited to move on from it! Dunno if you skip the intro normally, but make sure to watch it next episode. TY for another great reaction!
@@alexachipman Also, ty for the note from a couple episodes ago about the wardrobe leaning back to Scottish. Couldn't say at the time for fear of spoiling that they will indeed return soon, but I never would have picked up on that little costume foreshadowing
Their ability to tiptoe around the magic in the show is how I got my mom to start reading the books, she's not a fan of fantasy when it comes to reading but a big lover of romance and period dramas :D She blew past me when it came to reading the books and is now waiting for the newest one to be translated into danish, whiles I'm only about to start book 6 :D

I sobbed through this episode the first time (and most other subsequent watches, too!), but it's really well done. Thank you for the information about the Bible verse King Louis was referring to. I love hearing about things I have limited knowledge of. And the moment you did a deep dive into the Apostle Spoons a few episodes back I wanted to say "hold that thought," but I didn't want to spoil lol. Great reaction!
I love your responses and how you give insight into what we are seeing. Thanks so much for that, I have learn more because of it. I'm sure you will keep going into all of the seasons. When I first started this show it was Christmas with nothing on but old Christmas stuff. I was looking for SOMETHING that was different. I had just retired and got all of the stations to watch. So I was bored. This click all of my boxes, history, time travel, Si-Fi, romance, among a few. It was was just airing season 4 which I binged watched within 2 weeks. Between season 4 and 5 I read the books, all 8. I hope they will do all of the books.
This would definitely stand out from the typical Christmas movies! I’m glad you stumbled upon it. I plan on doing all the seasons, so eventually I might catch up to the currently airing episodes!
It's such an emotional and sad scene, but first time I watched it seeing Jamie's beard made me laugh, I just didn't expect it even though I think it looks good on him too.
I was a bit scared of this one because I knew it would make you cry. The acting is superb and the added first clip, with the future-bit was great to make people wonder what really happened. Then we get the King and the magic. All in all one of the best episodes. As always is a treat to see your reactions. 6:09 This shows how it is when the Lady of the House is kind to the servants. They welcome her back and even mourne with her.
I remember crying in the middle of 4am when watching this episode for the first time
I can see why! I actually had to keep pausing it to cry for a few minutes!
As a loss mom, Catriona Balfe acted the hell out of this episode.
Very few episodes of television make me cry as much as this one. I remember the first time I saw it, I just sobbed through the entire episode.

The music from the episode will get you in the feels anytime you hear it going forward. So beautiful
Sam Heughan, the actor who plays Jamie, was truly named after Samwise.
