    Ecumenical Councils?
These councils are not regarded as Ecumenical by all Orthodox Christians, but some major voices in the Orthodox Christian world do so, including 20th century theologians Fr. John S. Romanides and Fr. George Metallinos (both of whom refer repeatedly to the "Eighth and Ninth Ecumenical Councils"), as well as Fr. John Meyendorff, Fr. George Dragas and Metropolitan Hierotheos (Vlachos) of Nafpaktos.
    ~8th Ecumenical Synod:
The Eighth Ecumenical Council was a reunion council held at Constantinople in 879-880 A.D.
Convened by Emperor Basil the Macedon.
Headed by the Pope of Rome, John VIII (872-882), (*Orthodox at the time, as the schism didn’t happen until 1054 A.D.) and the Patriarch of Constantinople - New Rome, St. Photios the Great (858-867, 877-886).
This Synod validated the rulings of the 7th Ecumenical Synod by expelling those who did not recognize Nicea II as the Seventh Ecumenical Synod.
The council of 879-880 also affirmed the restoration of St. Photios the Great to his see and anathematized any who altered the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, thus condemning the Filioque.
The “Filioque” was a Latin term meaning "and from the Son," which was added to the original Nicene Creed, which had just begun to be imposed, abrogating (abolishing) the decrees of the Robber Council of 869-870. It also condemned the heretic synods of Charlemagne in Frankfurt (794 A.D.) and in Aachen (809 A.D.)
    ~9th Ecumenical Synod:
    (1341-1351 A.D.)
Sometimes it’s also referred as the Fifth Council of Constantinople.
These three separate synods (1341, 1349, 1351) are regarded as a whole because they dealt with the same issue. This Synod dogmatized on the uncreated Essence and the uncreated Energy of God, as well as on Hesychasm, which exonerated St. Gregory Palamas' hesychastic theology by condemning Varlaam (or Barlaam) the Calabrian and his rationalistic philosophy.
They also rejected the teaching that the attributes of God are identical with the essence. They condemned those who think the light of Christ’s Transfiguration was a created apparition. Also they condemned those who deny the energy of God that it’s uncreated.
This Synod therefore preoccupied itself with theological issues, and a Divinely-inspired father participated therein (St. Gregory Palamas), and its rulings were accepted by the entire Church.
The Ecumenical councils of the Orthodox Christian Church were convened in order to settle disputed questions that were disturbing the Church. The resolution of those questions came at the councils themselves, as the bishops devoted themselves to prayer, study of the writings of the Holy Fathers, and of theological discussion.
Indeed the 8th Ecumenical Council is sometimes referred to as the council of unity, as it was the last Ecumenical Council before the Great Schism (1054 A.D.) between East and West. Rome had aligned itself in accordance with the faith for decades before falling to foreign influence with the addition of the “Filioque.”
Let our hearts be troubled at this, and pray for our Roman Catholic friends that God will soften their hearts in seeing this error while softening our own to be better witnesses to the truth. May our Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us all!!!
