noise and slow boot up time as theres a lot going on. HP Proliant DL360 G7 have a PCI-Ex16 slot with power connector inside, plus PCI-Ex8 slot. so GPU and USB3 card can be fitted. can be had for $100 plus, usable ones for $200 nice ones $400.
Anybody fancy one, read up the specs, compare between and go look at the manuals, all available free on OEM websites.
A tower server can be a lot less hassle. standard everything mostly.

A fun project. On a lot of servers the power stages are ... quite tight. And some components assume the high airflow throughput and assume there will be air moving across them. Its cheap enough that no harm no foul.
I actually think that there could be a crazy market for someone to make a universal PC case that could take these mobos. After all, bottom line, they would be cheap and just have the slots and connectors in odd placement.

But you have to watch out for the GPU side of things. Dont put in very high end GPU. 1 thing is because of the low wattage power supply . 2nd thing is most older servers especially 1U size ones that were not meant to put GPU inside have no PCI-E X16 support. The slot is X16, but it is only electrically running at x8 because they were only meant to put high-end network adaptors which doesn't need X16 speed.

My suggestion would be to use one of this.riser/extenders to make the card external,.and J stall noctua fans in ace of the loud factory ones. That solves the coming issue and sound issue.

2:30 You don't want to replace the fans, you want to replace the heatsink. As it is set up right there, the heatsink isn't doing shit, these servers almost never run open like that so the fan configuration provides enough airflow for the CPU, but open like that, there's not enough airflow to cool that CPU, at least not quietly. Slap something like a hyper 212 evo or some other random cooler on it to improve massively on the noise situation (though the server might be unhappy if you remove the fans).

Very interesting video, a great and green re/upcycle of old tech that would have ended up in the landfill. I hope someone gets some use out of it.
Just FYI I think you made a typo on the SSD price, 30 usd / 22 aus.
Yeah Cyberpunk is brutal, my 3060ti can barely average 60fps at 1440p with RTX and DLSS on. Some drops to sub 40's around the megabuildings. On the other end I get a locked 165hz on my other fave game atm Elite Dangerous, could prob do that at 4k as well.

Brilliant. While others fixate on shilling for the pluts, you're actually keeping e-waste leachates from poisoning groundwater and filling landfills and instead converting them into competitive systems. Keep it up son!

Always been a thought to build a budget work station/gaming pc out of one of these. Biggest advantage to being so flat you can mount it on a wall.

Sucks about the power supply. Would be awesome to see if that server could take a Xeon Gold 6128 (6 core 3.4-3.7ghz) or Xeon Gold 6134 (8 core 3.2-3.7ghz) and drop a higher power GPU in it to see what it can really do.

Wendell over at TekSyndicate (when he was there) did a desktop build with a server board to get similar results (it was a few years back, so an earlier generation). Getting the board into a tower case, etc., was...non-trivial, to say the least. It involved tap-and-die work, for example, to get new mounting points for the board since it's obviously not ATX. Still, the end result was a perfectly usable gaming PC if you accepted some limitations (somewhat limited IO, no expansion options beyond the video card and so forth).

I would never do one of these server builds but I love watching them come together. My latest fix has been far cry 3. At 3440x1440, everything cranked all the way up, my 9700k/2080fe will usually run it between 60-80fps lol. It isn't cyber mess bad but very VERY poorly optimized.

You could always take out the original power button and stuff and find a sacrificial case, and some patience. You in the end could ditch the server rack as your case.

I just got a 4 socket, 64 core, AMD, 765GB EEC Ram, 8x 2.5' SAS Bays, w/ 12 Bay SAS Controller, 4x 10GB Nic Ports, and 4x 1250 watt PSUs, HP DL585 for $150. I'm calling it the HP Thick Client. When I'm done it will have 54TB of storage, over 1TB of RAM, 1080ti, 10GB fiber, and I refuse to spend more than $500 on it. I plan on starting a channel reviewing Open Source OS Images and explainer videos for Windows Server Roles.

It's not a server rack.... it's a rack mount server... big difference :P. (a server rack is a cabinet in which servers, network, power and other hardware is mounted. specifically what you have is a 1U (single unit) rack mount server - you can get server racks ranging in sizes from 4RU to 50RU).

I have a pc with a i7 2600, asus b75m-a, r9 280x and a Corsair vs550 and it keeps going into surge protection. Tried another vs550 also goes into surge protection. Same with a other asus b75m-a board. I tried the gpu and cpu in my test system that’s also has a known working vs550 (has handled 290x’s in the past) and they both work fine. Are both these psu’s faulty or did they just lose some 12v rail juice over time? These psu’s work fine without the gpu in stresstest. Don’t currently have a lower end card so can’t try if that does work. What are your thoughts?

The tiny fans boosted to full speed because the top cover was off, and the air wasn't being blown over the cpu cooler. Once you boot it with the cover on the fans should spin and it will be quieter, should be ok for a cheap desk non-graphical pc.

could always make it pretty. cut a slit for the graphics card in the top plate, and another wone for a noctua Socket 2011 cooler, fix the GPU in with a self made clamp or stripe of metal, mount the modified top plate, give the whole thing a nice graffiti job and then wallmount it. bang, you now got a PC and art on the wall.

If the 1u unit is free , then grab it. You can buy a regular system board from China for $50. Fit the CPU and RAM and use an old junk PC for the case and PSU. Still come in under $200.

If you used a PCIe extender ribbon, could you lay that video card down and put the case back on? I'm thinking maybe but you might have to cut out some holes for its fans... open air gaming rigs are for people without cats.

I remember there used to a 5.25 optical bay sized power supply for graphics cards only made by FSP, a 450w unit, they would be useful for some situations, although I guess it's not made anymore since most cases don't have optical bays anymore.

Be careful and consider using something like linux or maybe BSD for that instead of mswindows desktop OS. You can find gadgets (to make a gagdet chain) to do a ROP attack (Return Orientated Programming) on various intructions sets _(and available registers to move instructions in and out of, e.g. stack-overflow, heap-overflow, redirection of pointers)_ on a server if you are not using the appropriate up to date operating-system for all those spare unused bits of hardware on the server. You'd be safer with linux (at least it is something), but using mswindows10 (not intended for a server) could leave a great many security vulnerabilities.
On a server (because you can plug in many more different PCI-e cards or other IO) you have a much wider address space (range) that a desktop pc (IOMMU, ACPI) and without updates it can be a vulnerability.
See this an an opportunity to use cheap servers for linux gaming (vulkan?) instead of mswindows on those servers. Or get an up to date server OS by microsoft to run on it. Server2012 trials can be installed each few months for a couple of years. You can game on that somewhat. Sometimes server2016 too.
