I appreciate your careful analysis of Taemin and his work. I have been bothered by the "Korea's Michael Jackson" label, but was very pleased that you go beyond that and stress that Taemin, while influenced by MJ, is Taemin, and his genius is unique. The old saying "There is nothing new under the sun" applies to everything: painting, music, writing, even science. Artists always have been influenced by those who went before them. The great ones forge new paths based on those influences. In future, coming artists will (and have) find Taemin as their inspiration. Thanks again for this commentary.

You understand exactly what this piece was about. No more Korea ‘s (insert name). I appreciate you writing this comment. So many fail in Kpop to tackle to west bc they’ve seen it before and it feels like copy and paste on an Asian artist. It’s much better to learn and evolve. Thank you very much

Taemin, imo, will always be one of the best or the best dancer in K-pop. His technique, stage presence, choreography, and overall ability are incredible.

I think Michael has three living protégé: Usher, Chris Brown, and Taemin. Like James Brown's clear influence on Michael, you can clearly see that Michael's influence had a MAJOR impact on those three.

I didn't really fall into any other artists after MJ, until I saw Teamin. WANT is the MV that I watched several times with thrills. And more interestingly, I find Jonghyun close to MJ's singing styles. They both very expressive, contagious and style their tones freely.

As someone who admires both Taemin and MJ, this is one of the best pieces of analysis I've seen on the two and Taemin's main strengths. Many, many idols hold Taemin and SHINee as their inspiration, and I can't wait to see an analysis of future idols and their inspiration from Taemin as time goes on :)

That lip locking photo was really powerful. It shows this kind of sinister evil Taemin, kissing an angelic Taemin. The angelic Taemin’s looks so enthralled with the evil Taemin too. There’s like this sense of desperation in that kiss while the evil Taemin seems to have the control. I thought that was so cool.

Taemin is really good at storytelling of duality in his concepts and music. It’s fundamentally the foundation of his artistry and what he talks about.

Every time I see that clip of Michael Jackson just standing there for a full minute or more doing absolutely nothing and the crowd is insane! They are going wild. Who else has that kind of power over people? Michael Jackson is… I don’t even have words. Lee Taemin is definitely right next to him. He’s the only artist (with the exception of maybe Rain who danced backup for MJ) who even comes close to THE KING when it comes to dancing.

Rain danced background for Michael?! I never know that.

I've always felt that the spirit of MJ lives on through Taemin, BTS & a few others which makes me so happy. His influence & icon status is felt n appreciated all around the world till this day which is amazing. Whenever I watch Taemin perform, it's as if he's possessed by Michael & it sends chills throughout my entire body... it's as if Michael never left us. So thank you for this awesome analysis because Taemin is more than a Korean version of MJ, he is his own incredibly talented individual with MJ sprinkled in there. That is his musical son & I will stand on this fact forever. He is Lee Michael Taemin Jackson, R.I.P to the king 👑💙🥰

Solid video! I liked how this goes beyond the whole "Korea's Michael Jackson" (although being mentioned in the same breath as MJ is humbling). Taemin really has the whole package: singing, dancing, stage presence, and charisma.
Really like the in-depth videos you're doing these days. We need more intellectual, video essays in the K-pop space. Keep up the good work :)

I appreciate all sincere Taemin appreciators. I just want to point out a common mis-perception: that Taemin's Heaven is about spiritual religious heaven/ sentiment about JH/ dark heavy something-something, and no it's none of the above. That frustrates me. I take comfort that a recent English cover of Heaven clearly spelled out the meaning and depth of the song beautifully. It's nice to see Taemin being truly listened to, and heard, and not just ogled and watched.

Came here for Taemin but super excited to hear my ATEEZ mentioned. Literally, ATEEZ’s MVs are like mini movies. And I felt the same that their mvs and MV trailers gave me MJ vibes.
I have always seen MJ in Taemin. But as you mention, Taemin has become his own genre. Just as MJ had. TaeMin is absolutely amazing at what he does.

I been saying SHINee is the best group out of kpop for a reason. For someone as eclectic and versatile as Taemin, the discography and growth with his group demonstrates how intriguing his concept is. To compare him to MJ is right on the nose. The storytelling and amazing dance is just YES. MJ-Esque!!

I seem to recall Taemin saying in an interview that he was drawn into dance and performance because he saw MJ's Smooth Criminal video when he was very young. I am not much younger than MJ, and so I had the thrill (no pun intended) of growing up on his music. MJ was my ult and so I'm well versed in style and dance moves. You can clearly see MJ's influence on Taemin in many of Taemin's MVs, especially in Criminal. Yet Taemin (my ult) is uniquely himself, and he is at the top in K-Pop as he should be. You sum it up well. Thanks for your video.

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful analysis of Taemin's art and performance using the lens of Michael Jackson's suberb artistry. While he cites MJ as an influence in his work, I agree that Taemin has created his own place in the pantheon. We are looking forward to his next chapter which he will introduce to the world soon.

Noone can measure up to mj imo. it's why I don't like when people compare taemin to him. That being said while I see mjs influence I think taemin has a whole style and concept that is so completely himself. It makes him easy to respect. Usually when an artist draws heavily from MJ his influence easily overshadows everything else. I don't see this with taemin.

    • @wdcomments
      @wdcomments  Рік тому +2

While I can admit that has truth to it. For those that aren't Kpop fans they're easily going to see this perspective of immediate MJ influence. In the modern era the only well-known MJ-influenced soloists are Usher and CB. Taemin does exist in a lane all his own but drew a fair share of the showmanship and stage persona influenced persona.
