Dan, when you involve a kid, it’s good. I’m in a group that build our own wooden boats: canoes, kayaks, pirogues. When a kid is involved, you’re not just building a boat with a kid. You’re really building a kid with a boat.

  • @jasonjohnson6344

I’ve done something similar but I get cheap candles at the second hand stores, Goodwill or the dollar store. Melt the wax and dip my cardboard/match concoction into the wax. I let the cardboard and wooden part of the matches absorb lots of wax, while keeping the phosphorus ends above the wax. Once I’m satisfied that the cardboard has become fully saturated, I do a quick dunk of the phosphorus ends, let em cool a bit and do a second quick dunk. Then I let em cool on a piece of cardboard. Instead of using duct tape, I wrap a few passes of jute twine around the cardboard. The jute will accept a ferro rod spark once you scrape off a bit of wax and fluff up the jute fibers. This way, no matter how wet these may become, they will still work easily and I can get a fire going in the worst of weather conditions. Works for me. Good to see your son out with you. He seems to have some of your humor and I’m betting he’s just as mischievous too. 👍👍

Being a grammar guru is irrelevant when referring to the fact that the act of striking the matches with the striker, as opposed to striking the striker with a bunch of matches, was a smart idea. Congratulations Coalcraker for raising a son who appears to be wise beyond his years. Good job, Jackson!

Luckily I have a couple of large boxes of them in the house that I have had for a number of years. Regular matches would work as long as you kept the box they came in or have a piece of fine grit sandpaper on hand.

    Another useful tool:
Take an empty hand sanitizer bottle and fill it with CHARCOAL LIGHTER FLUID. Always carry that with your lighter or matches, you can do it with one of the tiny bottles as well. It does not compromise the plastic.
A few drops on the tinder or some paper shavings will get you an almost guaranteed fire, without wasting a bunch of matches or lighter time.
