If u liked playing with clay as a child, this game was like a dream
the venn diagram was a circle
Yeah, same if you liked to write *adventure expansion pack*
@Deadpoppin Why do you have a psychopath in your DP? Do you think it's cool to glorify killers? The dude put people into a meat grinder, ON STREAM, and threatened the people who saw it.
The presentation Will Wright showed for it was absolutely amazing. EA seemed to have scaled it down a ton. Poor Will Wright had the vision. Just look at all the stuff they where going to make ua-cam.com/video/tpK1rZ3tkU4/v-deo.html
I can understand if you didn't know about the game before launch and what it was going to be to then be super happy with it but man it could have been so much more.
My first wish from a genie would be to get Spore 2.
Followed up with the second wish being Spore 3, where you create creators that create creatures.
@@prcr364 *WE NEED TO GO DEEPER*
@@alevanderBatman 3rd wish would be spore 4, where the creators of those creators that create creatures create more creators
@@deadrat2319 *A second genie enters the playing field* "oh no"
Things are the greatest when they are great and they have no sequels.
I think the first time I heard about this game was in reading about it on Popular Science. The procedural animation was a technological marvel. Think about it, you create the skeleton from scratch, and the game just figures out how to animate its walking cycle. It's borderline magic!
that magazine was sick
even now, so well done
Looking back on it now, Spore had some absolutely revolutionary technology for a game despite all its flaws. The procedural animation was incredible, and it even had crazy procedural world generation before it was cool and overdone with games like Minecraft and No Man’s Sky.
Yeah that was the original GDC demo. Then they changed the entire direction of the game and ruined it.
@@nofanealbni no, i wouldnt say they ruined it, its still pretty good and fun, the idea was so great that not even EA could properly ruin it.

Intergalactic phallus monsters rampaging through the galaxy in search of spice really made me the man I am today
I had just turned 4 when spore was released. I don’t remember much of my childhood because I blocked out most of it, but spore is one of my most vivid memories from that time period. My parents got me that game when they were in some of the deepest poverty they’d ever been in. I owe a lot to them.

Still to this day I wish they had a water/oceanic and bug micro option
If i recall correctly there was meant to be an underwater element but it was cut for reasons (probably budget/deadline issues)
@@redmirrow8913 deadline issues.because EA decided it would be a good idea to put maxis under so much pressure that they had to cut out A ENTIRE STAGE!just imagine what spore could have been if EA didn't exist.

Something really interesting about spore is that every creature is saved as a png file.
If you go to the folder with all your creatures in it, you can see that every single creature is saved as a png. This means you can actually open your creatures in image viewing software, and look at a 2d png of them.
I have no fucking clue how or why the developers did this, but it's cool I guess.
they found a way to store actual data within those PNGs. Really mind-boggling indeed...
they also made it so that a time-lapse gif is automatically made of all the things you did while making any creation. Looking back at those reminds me of the thought process I had when making some of my old spaceships.
I keep coming across them on my pc lmao
A game called trail makers does this too I’m pretty sure, although one time I opened it up and my pc crashed
So could one send a PNG of a thing from Spore, send it to someone else, have them put it in their files, and it'd work properly?
@@bowldawg4394 yep! its pretty cool.
you can even just drag and drop the png into the open game window and itll get added to your pedia
I remember one of the promos for this game, they seriously got Robin Williams on stage with the creature creator and let him do whatever he wanted for a few minutes... its genius.
i recently introduced my little brother to spore and he is now happily removing all life from the galaxy
In his defense, killing is way more fun than making allies
@@bat6684 agreed
So, I originally got Spore on my dad's PC because he had never uninstalled it. I was bored one day and I was like OOOOOH funny symbol what it do? And needless to say, I was completely hooked. It's absolutely one of my favorite games ever made.
4:15 I love how one of these wacky alien monsters is literally just a cricket
I still remember trying to convince my parents this was an educational game so I could play it more
genius, this mans is a revolutionary

@@eltiofresca4998 I told them I was learning about evolution lol, I’m sure they didn’t believe that. My mom later told me she just thought the game was good for sparking creativity in me and she liked all the creatures and buildings I made which is fair enough.

@@zixvirzjghamn737 I HATE THRIVE
@@moo8866 why?
Fascinating how, from what I understand, Spore was basically talked about at launch the same way people talked about No Man's Sky. In fact I've even seen people compare them directly - ironic given that both of them are now looked at very fondly. The only difference is people dont feel the need to bring up Spore's initial backlash like they do with NMS.
Give it time. It took a decade for the mainstream to appreciate spore. People will forget about NMS start too, and in a decade or so, we’ll have videos like this.
The only difference is nearly everything. Spore promised a lot of great things and received a muted response because it did all of them, just not as well as hoped. No Man's Sky promised a lot of great things and received a backlash because so many promised features weren't even in the game at first, with reception improving as the promised features were eventually added and it became a different game from one it was at release. That there was a lot of hype around each is basically the only thing they have in common and no amount of time will change that.
Spore really is a classic. My most fond memories are:
Entering codes into cheat engine to give me more DNA. There was also a way to make the game boot into an expanded cell editor with parts that were normally locked away to the player.
There was this glitch you could do to make limbs invisible. By positioning them in certain ways, you could make a creature look like it was swimming through the air.
Galactic Adventures. Basically being able to make your own little games and adventures gave the game SO much replay value. My favorite one I made was an underwater adventure using the previously mentioned swimming creature glitch
Galactic Adventures is seriously underrated. I loved that shit
I dont know if youve heard this a lot but your art style in your videos is legitimately beautiful and stunning. It works so well ad It looks so incredibly high quality that I cant help but respect it. gj
I remember thinking as a kid "what if there was game that was just the cell stage, but multiplayer?" and then a couple years later agar.io blew up. I hope someone makes a sequel/spiritual successor to Spore sometime in the future
thrive exists, but it's still a demo
@@DesertsOfHighfleet try Elysian Eclipse. It's beginning to be what Thrive is taking too long to be.
@@beanoptodon oh my.. i gotta look into that
I was eight when this game came out, and it was the same time my best friend got cancer. I think we spent more time in the hospital playing spore than anything else that year, so I have really fond memories of this game. He got better, don't worry.
I’m glad your friend is better! How are they doing now if you don’t mind me asking?
@@TerraVulture He's doing well! I rarely talk to him anymore, we both found different friend groups eventually, but I've seen him recently and he's healthier than ever.
@@teok9964 I’m glad he’s doing good, even if I don’t know him, it’s still comforting to hear.
@@teok9964 Damn, that's kinda bitter sweet. You shared such precious and vulnerable moments with him yet you two barely talk anymore. Life fucking sucks sometimes.
So, I was born in 2007, and (like a loser) didn’t grow up with spore until I started watching videos about it online when I was 9 (thank u darkedgetv). My dad was so dumbfounded with me being interested in it, because apparently, when he played it, he found it weird and uninteresting. But, when I finally got my hands on it, I was changed man,, I got mods on it as soon as I could and I haven’t stopped playing since. I’m super proud of the cool creatures I’ve made over time (again, thanks darkedge) and I’d never be the same without spore.
It’s so upsetting that creature creation and creation games in general aren’t as popular. It sucks, these are my all time favorite kinds of games.
Hey i can be a loser with you. In 2007 mans be popping out le womb
You might like worldbox it gets update every couple of month's it's a fun god game
Mikasacus's content is always a delight.
“Spore Was Perfect”? What do you even mean?! It still is perfect!
The monster factory episodes on spore got me into it, and from there I’ve been addicted. It’s such a great game.
I once heard of a great civilization which lived to bring peace to the entire galaxy. Their name, Ghandicus, it was glorious. Truly an incredible species
Spore was my first videogame ever, I still remembered i begged my mom to ask my uncle to let me play, oh boy, to think im a software engineer student for that game
I remember making a near 1:1 recreation of crab people from South Park, and making a giant ass neck and beak with legs it was genuinely terrifying watching them hunt.
I remember in one run, I decided to terraform the Grox out of existence. Good times. Spore also taught me to manually save after every big event... Too many times I've crashed in the Tribal stage to restart halfway through Creature stage 😔
My grandma absolutely loved spore, I remember her playing it for hours. I miss her so much. Spore will always be a nostalgic favourite for me
I remember being in a school club where we play minecraft and spore. Good times
Spore was my life
THANK YOU! This game was my childhood and i still play it ocasionally.
Hearing your wrap-up at the end of your summation for Spore confirmed what I already knew: you're one of the best video makers, free.
Mika your videos always have insanely good visuals, I always come back to them for the comfy and cozy vibe :)
im so glad there are other people still playing spore 13(!!!!!!) years later. it's so good
Spore *is* perfect. Especially with all the expansion packs and mods like Dark Injection that make it even better.
Man spore with these mods is masterpiece
The last couple of days I've started playing Spore again after about 5 years, and I still love it. Great video btw!
This was just randomly recommended to me by yt, but I'm greatful. The nostalgia, man. Also, the visual style of your video is great
This was the first game I ever pre-ordered. I found the E3 preview footage on youtube in elementary school and fell in love with it. While I enjoyed the game immensely I was still greatly disappointed when I found out about how much they had degraded Will Wright's original vision.
I've never played Spore in my childhood, but what I would do is go up on youtube and search up Spore dragon compilations and they would have nightcore or whatever techno music blasting in the background
That shit was a blast.
I Just started playing spore again and this came our I'm glad I'm not the only person who remembers this game!
I missed your videos, your content is amazing. your creativity brings a tear to my eye, thank you mikasacus
Although Spore had its fun moments I'll always remember it as being a disappointment compared to what had been demoed and teased before release. Also it was one of the games that really pushed the DRM envelope.
The only thing that didn't age well was the graphics, but that's just about every game that is over a decade old that wasn't made in Source.
honestly the graphics aren't even that bad, and because its not meant to be realistic it doesn't age too badly
@Devon Saunders Agreed.
My first introduction was an ad after the first episode of clone wars on Cartoon Network and it instantly got me and my brothers invested in the game
Spore was the first game that gave me the tools to be truly creative. It was simple, it was easy, and I just found that its creators enabled me to truly let my imagination run wild! The expansion definitely kept me engaged, as I was just so excited to keep making adventures with storylines, drama, and action. It was the perfect digital sandbox and I still find myself going back to play some more every now and again. It's the perfect digital sandbox.
I started crying when he said "thank you" to spore, I guess that just shows how much I love spore.
Finally, someone who doesn't just talk about missing features and game quality. Spore is just fun. That's what I love about it.
Your videos are always so god damn comfy and cozy
Spore will always be a huge part of my childhood which makes me excited for thrive
Mika alot of people aren't old enough to remeber 2008 on UA-cam. Lol some weren't even born yet.
He goes out of his way to mention that some of them were babies, so yeah, that was taken into account.
I’m so happy to see fellow Spore enjoyers out there. I was obsessed with this game as a kid
Seriously, this has been one of my top sleeper titles of all time. thanks for the vid.
One of my first and favorite games, thanks for giving it a bit more (much needed) love 😌
I’ve always wanted spore, but I couldn’t afford it whilst I was younger and could only play it at a friend’s house
i remember just trying to get my full pack to be alphas and have them as a pet in the tival part
Thank you for making this video. It is so interesting to me that this decade old game continues to grow more popular, one of the few games that truly makes me happy.
Thanks for this video man. Always love when one my favorite games gets some love. Helps me validate my 2000+ hours on it

Ewww what ann Incorrect Gameplay Style 🤢
Still rembember that day in 2012 when I randomly found out about Spore Galactic Adventures' existence in a GameStop after playing the base game for years. It felt like the unexpected second coming of Christ.

Great gameplay good story and the best thing that the gameplay do a really great work with the story
Anyway hope you even just see it and believe me it’s worth it

Man bro finding the sleep deprived podcast was the best thing that ever happened to me. Good vid Mika
I think your work is fantastic, its really a shame more people don't watch. Please keep it up.
Y'all remember that myth that you could find Earth in the space stage? Not gonna lie, it was the only reason I put more than an hour into that section.
Yea, it exists: ua-cam.com/video/Er6R0Qvh8ok/v-deo.html

yet another banger video from Mika as always
Yes!!! I've been waiting for a video like this.
I love spore, but I'm also really really sad we got the (admittedly lovely) cartoony game instead of a realistic simulator. I really wanted a real evolution simulator game.
This reminded me of how much fun I had with this game! I remember just making humans and them being in the weird uncanny valley and being so funny. Thanks for taking me back
Dude thanks for helping me relive this, totally forgot about this but spent so much time on creature creator.
I love the art style and quality of this video
I have two brothers, back then we were 5, 8, and 10, and we all gobbled Spore right up. It was such a masterpiece, and I couldn't imagine those days without it
People are talking about Thrive: please take a look into Elysian Eclipse. They have a discord that has all the updates and works in progress and it's a cool little tech demo. They just added fur to the creature creator, and it's extremely satisfying. They're definitely developing past what Thrive could have been, and I've kinda given up Thrive for it. Give it a look!
I will forever love Mika's art style
me and my brother was obsessed with this game. its nice to get a throwback to it
I still remember the day when i found out that you can hold Ctrl to take off individual pieces of the limbs and use them anywhere you want.
Mix & Match yourself a completely new arm or leg, make cool head shapes, make a neat tail, etc. It's so useful, especially with the exoskeleton parts.
I loved the creature stage of Spore so much for how much creativity it gave me and stretching the legs and arms out as far from the creature's body as I could gave me endless enjoyment. I will say that working up my cities and nuking my neighbors the first chance I got is another one of the fond memories that game gave me many years ago. Love the content as always!
I like your transitions and your designs :)
Finally some Spore appreciation. Great vid, Mika.
This game was just about my entire childhood
nothing rivals the pride and thrill of killing an Epic. great video as always
The cell stage remains the most beautiful gameplay I've ever experienced :)
i love alex unknown im really happy theres some new music
I discovered Spore on UA-cam about a year or two after release. I randomly clicked on a video and witnessed one of the greatest video game introduction ever as a kid.
At the time I was very interested into learning about the universe and the evolution of life on Earth. Witnessing that asteroid impact an earth like planet and then start off playing as a cell was just so incredible.
This is so wholesome omg xD I really wanna play it sometime now!
Your editing is godly
You've convinced me to install the game once again. Thank you 🙏
