"Music video by "Weird Al" Yankovic performing Christmas At Ground Zero. (C) 1986 Volcano Entertainment lll, LLC"
Fun fact -- Weird Al was pretty much forced by his record label to record a Christmas song. This was the result. Moral of this story -- don't MAKE Weird Al do something he doesn't want to do, because he'll make it backfire on you. (And produce one of the finest examples of black comedy at the same time.)
They PROBABLY won't make THAT mistake again, but, based on how well this was received, never say never!
@@petergant1379 They did. Either shortly before or shortly after this one. "The Night Santa Went Crazy" was the result.
After that, they realized that forcing Al to do Christmas songs doesn't end well, and they've never tried again. (If Al ever decided he wanted to do one, I'm sure it would be just fine. Just, he doesn't want to, and doesn't want to be forced.)
@@erichusmann5145 Al is a King.
@@madhatter6913 It's ALREADY popular, and, the only way it could get LESS popular, .might be if Russia DOES start using NUKES. There'd be fewer people left to listen to ANYONE'S music, maybe on a Global scale!

Saw Weird Al on this last tour, and he said "This is a song I wrote 35 years ago, but lucky me, it's more relevant today than ever before" and went right into this.
And now it's 100 times more relevant.
When this song was written was released it was also relevant because this was during the cold war where everyone thought they were going to be nuked because of the conflict between Russian and American

My favorite line has always been, "if you see somebody climbing down your chimney, you better load your gun and shoot to kill ". That line has cracked me up since I was 10 and still does 30+ years later
In America you can do that
I almost die laughing every time.
My favorite moment is the clip of Pres. Reagan, “Well, the big day is only a few hours away, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to it much as we are,” but that moment is great too.
Now that would be cancel culture'd
@jandrew1994 why? Is this just the stock reply you have to anything old? It's not a beer can or a children's book.
I can't get over how well that air raid siren blends together with the rest of the music.
That’s my favorite part

I had to respond to one of those when I was a fireman. Or did weird Al set his arm on fire when he put his arm in the microwave to get a tan.

That was intentional I think.
The 50's had the perfect blend of optimism and pessimism, like "The death blast is coming, but we'll be fine if we get underneath this picnic blanket!"

If the blast is far enough away to not vaporize you, getting in a ditch will save you from being burned.
@@oron61 - And likely protect you from getting brained from flying debris.
Did you ever see the picture of the woman hiroshima victim who got the floral pattern of her dress burned into her back? Because the fabric of her dress varied in thickness being a fancy dress, the pattern of her dress was burned into her back, effectively giving her a gruesome tattoo. Which means 1 mm and 2 mm thick fabric made the difference between her skin being burned and her skin not being burned. That's all it takes to protect you, IF you're the right distance from the so called death blast. You don't seem to GET that a nuclear explosion is above all else a BRIGHT FLASH OF LIGHT. Literally just hiding behind something that is opaque to light, even if it's made of a flimsy material, can make the difference between being horribly burned all over your body and being completely unharmed. Of course nothing will protect you from the death blast AT ground 0, but most of the affected area isn't AT ground 0. So don't look down on duck and cover. It works. Remember that.

Just the thought of Al's record label forcing him to do a Christmas song and expecting a cute, commercially-friendly holiday tune about junk food or something and getting THIS in return raises this song from "amusing" to "utterly hilarious" territory.
"The Night Santa Went Crazy."

Hands down, the greatest Christmas song ever written on the subject of thermonuclear war.
+Patrick Harris doomsday walz
Probably because it's the only song ever written on the subject of thermonuclear war... ☺ Big fan of Weird Al though...

Not entirely true. Jona Lewie with Stop the Cavalry also made mentions of thermonuclear war in his song. Even if the theme for the most part circles around ww1.
Also, probably the only christmas song written on the subject of thermonuclear war.

Al is one of those amazing comedians who is somehow both wholesome/family friendly and incredibly dark/violent at the same time. He's got that wonderful Looney Tunes type quality that somehow makes it work.
He also is an excellent musician, can sing, play instruments, AND rap! He's utterly and ridiculously talented.
It's talent combined with an interesting personality.
Unlike musicians who are selected for their looks to sing music someone else wrote with autotune fixing their lack of talent.
@@wmrme9084It’s the same type of Christmas record as Granma got run over by a reindeer..
@@aclark903 Yeah, but Grandma got run over by a reindeer isn't based on devastating real events in history. I'm an Uber driver in Nashville. Picked up a guy and we started talking music. We shared a passion for Weird Al. So he asked for the Aux. I gladly handed it over and since it was Christmas Eve, he played the night santa went crazy, then this. We laughed and joked, not knowing that less than 12 hours later, someone would blow up an RV downtown on Christmas morning. True story.
I remember me And me dad were going to get some dunking donuts on Christmas morning (somewhat of a tradition) and we were listening to N.P.R when they started talking about some maniac who committed suicide by blowing him self up in an R.V and killing 2 cops, damn man

Funny story: When this song came out my husband was stationed in a nuclear warhead division in Greece (you had to have a secret clearance just to come onto base) He played this song on his speakers out the window. The troops thought it was hilarious, but the base commander came over and told him to never, ever do that again.
Even funnier: Weird Al's record publishers insisted that he do a Christmas album. Al hated the idea, figuring that the market was already saturated with Christmas music, and wasn't interested in the same old stuff. His publishers kept pressuring him, so Al wrote "Christmas at Ground Zero," and even made the video at his own expense.
His publishers didn't dare mention the subject ever again.

You can't graduate from Army basic training until you pass an end of course test. When I was in, they called it Soldier Stakes; they either marched or trucked the whole company to this huge building and you went from sergeant to sergeant doing hands-on evaluations. One of my troops was going through with a guy from WAY the hell down south...this guy gets up to the sergeant who's testing the React to a Nuclear Explosion task.
Sergeant asks him, "Private, how would you react if you saw a nuclear blast in front of you?"
The correct answer is, "Sergeant, I would immediately dive to the ground on top of my weapon, cover all exposed skin, and tuck my hands under my body."
Then the sergeant would ask why you laid on top of your weapon and you were supposed to answer, "Sergeant, I would lay on top of your weapon so it doesn't blow away."
He would then ask why you covered all your skin and you were supposed to answer, "Sergeant, I would cover my exposed skin so it doesn't get burned."
(They never really explained how you were supposed to have the time to do all these things, just that you were supposed to do them.)
Not this fucking guy.
"Private, how would you react if you saw a nuclear blast in front of you?"
"Sergeant, I would bend over and kiss my ass goodbye."

Here's the story behind this song as I hear it. Weird Al was ordered to do a Christmas song by the record company he didn't want to do it but this was his answer classic
It’s even worse when he can’t really perform it anymore, because “Ground Zero” became synonymous with 9/11
I think he even said something like that on record
Growing up in the 50's, those particular sirens were terrifying. I still get a little panicky when I hear them. They are the death knell of the nuclear age.
They used those same sirens for Tornado Sirens when I was growing up in the 90s. They went off every Tuesday at 10a to test. Very spooky. It used to scare the freshmen at the college who were from other places.
I moved to a small town where they run the siren EVERY DAY at noon. Not the best idea, because the local populace is now inured to it.
I played this song last year around Christmas and my mother got very angry that I "played a song making fun of 9/11". I then informed her that "ground zero" didn't come from 9/11, but rather is where a disaster occurs.
And this song came out like, 20 years before 9/11

For those of you about to post "this is offensive because it's making fun of 9/11," please note a few things:
1. This song was released in 1986, 15 years before 9/11.
2. Ground Zero is a general military term for where a nuclear weapon lands.
3. This song is a criticism of the Cold War. If it were about 9/11, it wouldn't mention radiation, nukes, or missiles because the World Trade Center was hit by airplanes, not nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons have not been used offensively since WWII.

Always one of my favorites from Al. And, these days, it goes perfectly with the "Fallout" fandom's general feel.
Being a Fallout fan boy has made this song ten times funnier for me.
Jack Van Kirk it instantly gets way better if you like fallout
1:20 love the way the guy pushes the girl out of the way to try to get shelter first
It's hilarious that they thought a blanket would protect them from a Nuclear blast.
@Kieran Welborne Still, pretty sure the big concern is being turned to a pile of ash by said bomb lol.
ArgyleGroove, Depending how far away you are. You’re at more risk of going blind or being hit something from the blast.
@@paladinboyd1228 I will never get why people think duck and cover was meant to protect you from the initial blast
Sean Donahue, I think the government had to create something to keep people calm.
While it’s true the further away you are the better your chances are. But at ground zero you’re dead very dead.
So dead in fact all that will remain of you is a shadow on the wall.
1:25 the siren harmonizes with the song lol
The song everyone will play Christmas 2022
Parents: You can choose any Christmas carol
Me: Plays this song
Parents: Get out
Your parents prob hate you
@DOUG HEINS Mom: Yeah that's much better.
I also recommend you So Long Farewell by Laibach. Same mix of holiday atmosphere and very dark subtones ua-cam.com/video/qOfkwm_Yz0Q/v-deo.html
@@zsin128 well if you communicate in crap YT memes, they probably have good reason
@@cthulhupthagn5771 ikr. remember when comments were original
If it was total fallout, ground zero, and I watched Weird Al Yankovic singing this song in the middle of time square, I would die happy.
Mist Prowen from radiation poisoning most likely
Or a super mutant smashing
2022 and still playing this for the holidays! Many blessings, everyone! 🙏🏾
This song is frighteningly topical for 2022.
Nothing says Christmas like nuclear annihilation.
Yes
Long afterwards there will be snow, just like 2020 Christmas
The one constant in the universe, Weird Al making me smile even in these times. Thank you!
This Christmas's gonna be a blast
Too bad they never play this on the radio around Christmas time.
I played this for my sister in law over thirty years ago. It is still her favorite Christmas song. edit: I have a great sister in law.
I listened to this in social studies. Everyone was shook, except me. I knew what to expect since it was a Weird Al song.
what school? I did too
I'm wondering if we're all going to be singing this soon.
stalkingtiger777 “yes” If anyone can do it, as an alarm song file, on your phone, make it this song. Dahboo77 says Russia China is gonna nuke Ukraine! 🤣🤣🤣😇😇😇👍
Probably sooner than you think.
Oh absolutely positive that we are going to enjoy The Purge, Nuclear War, and Radiation Poisoning, not to mention disabling Earth’s already weakening magnetic shield, the magnetic north/south pole shifting away from populated areas and pole reversal, as the yellow sun is expressing massive CME, and various X class emissions aimed at Earth. Eventually in a few several weeks and months, internet crashes and every thing we took for granted will be useless junk. Atari 2600, Coleco Visions, and old ancient game consoles in working condition with enough games will be big gold ticket items. Assuming you live near a power grid and have reliable electricity ⚡️ to play the games. Assuming the Russians haven’t destroyed our sub-stations and our fragile power grid? Nah..
still one of my most favorite songs ever.
Yes... ANYONE who thinks this is about 911 is ignorant and needs to look when the song was recorded.... On a different note... one of my favorite Christmas songs I play it all the time at my dj gigs during the holidays lol
Gilbert Sedeno Jr ground zero is military code for somewhere where a bomb went off.
People aren’t ignorant they just need time to listen to the song
Yeah seriously, what do mushroom clouds, radiation, atom bombs, gas masks, missiles, ducking and covering, and air raid sirens have to do with 9/11? Not to mention it was quite literally September, not December.
Not to mention that in the music video it shows clips from the 1960s. In that decade people were worried about Nuclear war. That one scene where the students were going under their desks? That was the duck and cover drill. My dad explained to me that when he was a student during the 1960s he had to do that drill along with his classmates.
I'd love to think that some of the 951 who dislike this video think that nuclear annihilation is nothing to joke about. (I disagree.) Sadly, I think they're all people who think the phrase "Ground Zero" can ONLY apply to 9/11. Too bad UA-cam is the only place to hear it because it's a great song!
People who think this song is about 9/11 obviously did not do their research. The song's "Ground Zero" refers to the nickname for an area that has been hit by nuclear weapons, like in the song. The song came out in the 1980s, approximately 15 years before 9/11/01. If you bothered to LISTEN to the song, there's no connection to 9/11 and it's instead about Christmas Day during a nuclear war. And Weird Al would NEVER be so insensitive and tasteless to write about one of the most upsetting days in American history.
So complaining that this song is about 9/11 is like complaining that "Fat" is making fun of childhood obesity.
Yes, to all of this.
The term “ground zero” existed well before the WTC ever existed.
I think it's darkly humorous that nuclear war was so fused into our culture that a bunch of news networks trying to profit from 9/11 decided to roll with an "alarming" label for the wreckage in New York City.
The incident was alarming, but actually would be small potatoes compared to an incident in NYC that produced the type of "ground zero" Weird Al is singing about here...
Who the hell thinks that this song references 9/11?
Well put
trevor bgs conspiracy theorists who say 9/11 was an inside job.
Never thought I'd be praying for this kinda Christmas, but here we are.
Might be a prophetic song this year 2023.
Alternate ending to Dr. Strangelove.
Nit Picker mien furer, I can walk
Exactly
Starring late Leslie Nielsen no less (I miss him >
I ironically saw this video the same day I watched that movie for the first time. I'm sure Stanley Kubrick would approve of this
I lol'ed.
I'd always found air raid sirens terribly unsettling. Hearing them live right before a tornado hit, I thought it was the end of the world. Never felt my heart race that fast since.
The perfect song for 2023
Who knew this would be so accurate
Probably all planned. I heard nuclear bomb might be dropped on December 23 or if not that something really big is gonna happen.
Due to how 2020 is turning out this is going to play on Christmas Eve.
gonna be blasting this masterpiece all month. all the neighbors will hear is weird al joyously singing about nukes and Christmas.
AbsoFreakinLutely
Oh I’m gonna do it. I was about to comment that
Definitely!!
i play it every year, it might actually be fitting this time
