I love that after Tom spends most of the film trying to make Summer into HIS idea of the dream girl, without caring about what SHE wants, he learns to rely on himself, and not his fantasy. And when they meet up again, he sincerely tells her that he's glad that she's happy.
Tom fell into a horrible depression, but then he recovered from it and started looking for jobs. I don´t remember him learning to rely on himself. It is left open. We the audience got to imagine how it goes with Autumn. I like to imagine that he still fails with her.
I remember when I saw 500 Days of Summer. It's was a first date with a guy I'd met at a show a few nights before. He started crying (like sobbing heavily) at the end of the movie. He kept saying he knew how that guy felt and how the movie was "so romantic." I didn't know what to do besides hug the guy and then get outta there. Personally, I love JGL but Tom was kind of a jerk. I thought the movie was truthful not romantic. Never saw that guy again. A few texts but I was like "yeah, nah. I don't think you're ready to get back out there."
JGL had to point out to the audience that if they liked Tom too much, then they should watch the movie again. Apparently too many people missed the point about Tom being a jerk.

Tom does not find love or success elsewhere. He starts looking, but it is left too open ended to definitely say he found anything. He was still unemployed and looking for a dream job. He projected all his career expectations onto the architect profession and thought he was qualified, but he had no experience and he did not think about the viewpoint of the employers who hire architects. He just selfishly expected the architect profession to fulfill his professional desires and give him fulfillment and passion. It was as if Tom went to architect school because he saw romance movies that did not research the profession and he completely missed the point.
I completely agree with list that you chose. I haven’t seen all those movies but now I’m definitely gonna watch them. There just one movie that I would add and it would be Lalaland: I know people didn’t like the fact they weren’t together at the end but I loved the end because it shows that love isn’t a happy ending by itself for everybody and you shouldn’t always give up everything you’ve been dreaming of for love.

I could be wrong, but I think it’s told this way to depict how people remember their relationships. People don’t always remember how things play out from beginning to end and they can be very selective with the memories they keep. Sometimes when we look back we remember things sporadically-not always in order and not the journey as a whole. I think the makers of 500 days of Summer did this to show how Tom had very selective memories about his relationship with Summer. It’s not until near the end of the movie that Tom takes his sister's advice to remember all aspects of his relationship with Summer, not just the parts he chose to highlight.
