- On the Big Island, a Japanese tourist remains in custody tonight because of two items he had in his carry-on bag which led to a brief evacuation at Hilo Airport.

you can buy inert grenades at literally any army navy store.. even according to the ATF they're totally legal if rendered inert by drilling a hole in them after removing the explosives inside and are not considered a weapon. his mistake seems to be he didn't know you're not allowed to bring them on aircraft, that is the illegal part.. The same exact thing happened in Pittsburg yesterday.
dunno if he would even be legally be able to bring them back home either. I think you would face even more severe punishment in Japan for bringing those back.

Yet the violent passengers that harm others and threaten the safety of the aircrafts typically are not criminally prosecuted. Most get off with a probation and not landing on the no fly list.
