Having not seen Proasis until after I had designed and assembled Malolos two hulls, I'm amazed at how similar our two boats are. Mine is a smaller version. Much of my design ideas came from other designers such as Denney, Dierking, Dobkins. My vaka is 4.77 meters while my ama is 3.65 and beam is 2.4 meters. my weight to windward ama has no cabin, just a cockpit. But Proasis sails much better than Malolo. Still working out bugs and doing R and D on steering. I too have a smaller sail but will probably add a second larger crabclaw to the inventory for light winds. Great work! Loved seeing TWO proas sailing together so far away from Micronesia/indonesia with two very different approaches. Definitely inspirational! need to get out to the shop and design better steering system than my oars and paddles.

is the impression correct that in these light wind conditions Proasis held up pretty well despite its smaller sail?
Well, Mareinoa was faster due to the combination of size and sail area. Upwind it was pretty close (proasis maybe pointing a little bit higher), halve wind and on a reach Mareinoa was maybe 1kn faster. But proasis compensated for that during the shunts. It took quite long for Mareinoa to complete the maneuver while proasis can do it singlehandedly in 50 seconds or less (measured from cruising speed to cruising speed) without any hussle.
You see in the first 20 seconds, that Mareinoa is upwind considerably faster, and later it has to open the main to slow down speed. The difference in speed is normal when you compare size and sail area.
@@multihuller True, Mareinoa stopped for us a couple of times. Speed at that day was 2-3 kn so 1kn difference is considerably. As you say, not a big surprise. Was a great experience to have this meeting on the water, looking forward to repeat it!
