Modems are actually called "modulator demodulator" Computers only understand digital signals. But the data from internet is analog signals. So the modem demodulates and converts the internet data to digital signals and modulates and converts the sending data to analog signals. You would not need a modem if computers could understand analog signals.
This must be a fake backdrop because as handshake proceeds between modem and the ISP, the text in the window will update you on each status of the handshake process.

Dial up internet, another forgotten technology right up there with VHS and audio cassette tapes, 8 tracks, CDs and DVDs. Hey kids, remember when TV stations went off the air after midnight and there weren't even reruns to watch? Just a color bar screen test and a constant long single beep? No? That was also before your time.

Many people have asked their USRobotics modems to dial their ISP so they can get online and search for answers, so you're not far off.
