This is hitting home a lot for me because my regional office is being shutdown, and we’re all being forced to WFH. The office was lovely, with a great atmosphere and a well stocked pantry lol. But it was a place for me, a place where I felt in control of who I am and with people I consider friends and coworkers. Having lunch regularly, chatting over the pantry island, that’s all going away for me now and I’ll be alone all over again. There’s something about the kind of feeling a really good office space and coworkers can give, that sounds capitalist or boring but it really is a joy in itself. A good workspace becomes a great excuse for people to hang out too sometimes, but now I won’t have the place to go to or for all of my coworkers to be physically present age anymore.

this kinda stems from the sheer lack of third spaces
i wanna go to a 1990s office just to hang out and appreciate the office space esque atmosphere, hopefully no lumbergh
the buildings themselves are always overhated, most suburban office parks are decently built and have nice design although surface level parking lots aren't good at all

I think its a matter of ego. Every generation thinks they are gonna have their end of the world moment because they can’t imagine the world going on without them. It makes you feel more important if everything ends right when you do. We want to feel like we a part of the climax, not just a footnote.

@@darkduck3677 ok I understand this but I think you are forgetting some things that add to the existential crisis of current living. Mainly the internet and the climate crisis. Both work in tandem to add extra dread to people's lives. The world's climate is falling apart. And every terrible thing that is happening in the world is told to us daily via our phone. I don't think we are the last generation. Even if the worst case scenario happens I don't think human beings will be wiped out. But the terror we feel is real and unique which has created this genre of art. It expresses our horror at the world. One we feel less safe in than we ever have in history. I think it's dismissive to disregard these new circumstances. It's not just the idea that we can't see a world without us. We are seeing a world that may leave us behind

I'm an autistic woman in my 30s and this show really hit spots no other media has on top of just being amazing. Part of it was myself relating to the main character but she reminds me a lot of my mom. Thinking about how misunderstood and underappreciated my mom has been is really tough. My mom is awesome. People are awesome. I am awesome and you are awesome :)
oh also I actually liked the weird flabby nudity just because we all have weird meat bodies and that's just a part of life I guess. We're all human nothing wrong with it

And the flabby “ugly” bodies with skin folds and wrinkles that I felt cringe towards at the start and then slowly found beauty in as it isn’t something we are ever purposefully shown in a non judgemental way like this show does it

    - I don't think the nudity was really supposed to be a joke. I think especially in the case of her parents, I think it was meant to show that she genuinely loved her parents and is visibly accepting of the various way people want to spend their time - but it's just not right for her. I think it's to highlight how simple her desires are. I also think over the course of the show, it serves as a frank confrontation of aging and by extension, what awaits them all - death. It is narratively in contrast to her friend who keeps talking about Tibet - she visibly put off by her friend's shallow imitation of depth, further showing that what she craves is something genuine. Which is why her finding the Distraction winds up hitting so hard - its the first time we see her have a genuine connection to something.
    - It's really odd hearing her fling through the lens of a younger, possible male perspective. I think a major aspect was missed in this case. It's not that she wanted something "casual" - it's that she didn't want to spend her last months on Earth being a grown man's mother figure, being used by someone else to make themselves happy. Many women are pressured to find their happiness in the happiness of someone else. That scene is to establish the fact that even though she's quiet - she is not a pushover and not constrained by expectation. This idea is further built on in the episode where she goes hiking with her sister. She embraces her office culture with complete commitment - that's not casual she's after, it's something genuine.

Carol gets laid and the audience is lead to believe that will be part of the key to a new life. But,no, it cements the fact that Carol doesn't want to do what everybody else does. The first episode takes Carol (and the audience) to the Distraction, and those who do not wish to go down in extravagance. It's lovely.

Something that's really important here for the context of sex jokes and such, is that this is supposed to take place in the 90's. This show is actually pretty good at centering the type of "humor" that was popular at that time. I think that in a lot of ways, the nudity and sex stuff shows how trauma of impending death affects everyone differently. As an autistic person, the main character really comes across as one of the best autistic characters I've ever seen in media without either infantilizing her or making her into the butt of a joke. I thought this show was more humorous in the little slice of life stuff, but all of it was twinged with heartfelt moments. The humor was rarely "mean" to the characters, even the ones that are shown to behave in pathetic or "bad" ways. I liked that. It made me feel like everyone in this world is willing to get and give the grace to be accepted.

  • @ShyShrike

The 4th episode with Carol’s sister is both heartbreaking and heart warming as a woman with autism. When you have neurotypical people that love you and want to know you better and interact with you, it can be hard. We want that interaction. We don’t want to put those barriers up. But fundamentally we interact differently, and a lot of autistic people are entirely aware of that, but . But there’s just this big gap between our styles of communication that sometimes it just feels like we’re so distant from one another. I’ve had people that love me say some of the exact things Carol’s sister said to her when she admitted frustration at the communication break down. But when those people start to understand us and meet us half way, it’s magical. It’s beautiful. I wish they showed those kind of interactions more often on media.

Instead of focusing on violence or sex or drugs or even doing whatever you want for the fun of it like the rest of the world in this show, it focuses on the mundane, the slow-change, and the peaceful monotony that a lot of adults are actually comfortable with. No extreme adventures or pleasure, but the relatable company that pulls away the topic that the world is going to end.

Interesting enough, the episode that made me cry was the lost & found episode. They way Carol gives everything a sentimental value is exactly how I thought about a lot of things especially whenever someone lost something. I think the beautiful thing I love about Carol is that she takes the time to appreciate all the small things. She doesn't wave them off for a grand desire. Everyone is a person with their own stories to tell.

@@CartoonUniverse I envision their conclusion unfolding like this: in the final moments leading up to the impact, the entire group, comprised of Carol, her parents, her sister, and the various characters they've encountered, converges at a single location. There's an undeniable sense of apprehension as they exchange glances, but surprisingly, smiles emerge, conveying a collective acceptance of the inevitable. With determination in their expressions, they face the approaching celestial body - whether it be a planet or asteroid. As they gaze at the sky, closing their eyes, the subsequent scene reveals them opening their eyes in a heavenly setting. This narrative brings to mind the Steve Carell movie, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World."

God I see myself so much in Carol on such an extreme level, like that's me right there 🥹. Her loving the mundane, calm and quiet parts of life resonate me on a personal level. Her going to the abandoned applebees is something I would actually do in this end of world situation it hits so hard, then when everyone starts tearing up because it really hits them that the end of world is actually happening and fast right after they formed such a happy community with each other?!?! is just so bloody sad. Idk if im autistic (ive felt for a really long time that I might be but my mum refuses to let me get me tested cause "im not r*tarded" and "nothings wrong with me" 😒) but I feel like Carol is autistic or a character that many of us can see ourselves in its unreal how hard I feel like her.

I thought if the subject matter of the show could disturbed me in some way but if anything it's given me some comfort and I love the characters and seeing how they work and the dynamics given the circumstances. I found Carol relatable in the fact that I'm ok with the simplicity of life. I think doing something different from time to time can be fun, I'm content with what I have. I even enjoy being a stay-at-home daughter at the moment. The show didn't make me cry surprisingly, but it still pulled a lot of emotions from me and when I did cry, it was only from the ending. To see Carol's journey end and her happiness in that moment.

And I think the writers knew that which is why they threw it in and it works because in a true end of the world scenario or those “you have 6 months to live” tropes is living life to the fullest. But there’s 9 billion people on this world and everyone is different. I also loved the abandoned child, it was dark in essence but they handled it light heartedly. When we finally get to what the sister was feeling about Carol. My reaction was, "Really, all of that just to come to terms about admiring Carol's choices?" But then I thought how annoyingly accurately they displayed how we get around to things in real life. I'm a straight shooter in a world of people who come around to things. A good review of a great though difficult series that is best watched alone - IMO. The show hit me hard as I retired in May after a 43 year career that I just loved as much for the job if not even more for the friends I made over the years. I am still regretting my decision - feeling that a life I had known had ended, but still I know that I needed to make the decision that I did. I needed to pass on my responsibilities to someone younger, healthier and likely with more current skills than mine. This is one of those shows that I think most folks will love or hate depending on where they are in their lives.

I didnt see the nudity as something the show wanted us to laugh at or an attempt at "over-the-top sex jokes" at all, i feel like there was very purposefully a symbolic reasoning behind it given how casual and frequent it is, and attention is pretty much never brought to it. I think making Carol a monotone character was a pretty great move. The show does a great job telling you in the beginning that this is not your typical show about romance or drama from the get go, and carries that sentiment to the very end by using Carol as a device who avoids all those extrenuous and complicated matters.
She only sought simplicity, routine, and companionship. which examplifies your point very well about what the director is trying to portray. Bc we often seem to overcomplicate our lives and forget that the things that really mattered at the end of the day were the bonds we forge with others.
There's so much more i like about the show, but i just appreciate what it did for me. I like having lil reminders every now and then.

This feels like a western modern version of Evangelion, I need a season 2!
There’s still over 3 months left which could be next season, and then a final season which is the last week.
I cried, it made me reflect on my own life, my values, and future. I want to see how these characters reconcile their mortality and end of life!
Also while not official, Carol reads like someone with ASD which many neurodivergent people can relate. I really appreciated that unique representation as a middle aged woman in this already unique but familiar world.
My biggest question surrounds “the distraction” itself, what happened to the original man who started it, we see him hire carol in then not appear much(if at all?) through the series? We were shown Kathleen was the second employee, so where did the new managers come from?
Finally what is the audit for? We know it started because of 0.38, the number the original manager calculated in episode 7 which seemed to be an anomaly in whatever they were doing and is why he kept working, but the question then is how their work or the audit is relevant to solving the issue?
There are so many small details that make you think and mysteries not exactly answered.

The planet hurling to earth is just a metaphor for death. It’s about life being a distraction for our fear of death. Different strokes for different folks. Some people are looking for parties or adrenaline some are looking for spirituality and some people just want a comfortable routine, but we’re all trying to distract ourselves from dying. I hate routine and boring, also Applebees so I don’t relate with Carol at all. We all relate to her desire to find purpose though.

Gosh this show is giving so much insight as to why I've been doing bad mentally. This show slowly reveals that people are searching for those mundane things to feel human and connected. I realized that my education is much the same way. With each day I've spend at school I get closer and more comfortable with the people around me, getting that personal human connection. The fact I'm gonna be graduating soon means I won't be able to see or talk to them the same way I did at school and it's quietly been upsetting me. Even tho its the way of life, I feel afraid of what the future will hold for me.
