  • Cable lift Traxcavator loader on a Caterpillar 30. don't know the specifics but it would be late 40's up to maybe '52? vintage. Limited forward visibility had to make this a tough machine to operate. Was operating at the Pioneer Power show in Le Sueur Minnesota 2015.

The first time I heard of the traxcavator loader was in reading the book "Bulldozer" written by Stephen Meader about 1950; main character in great story found, bought, fixed up to running an abandoned Cat D2. Did a few regular bulldozing jobs to get started and then found a good used Traxcavator, toke a chance and borrowed money to buy the implement, mounted it on his D2 and got different types of contract excavating. Great story of ambition, thrift, determination, hard work and honesty leading to success. Millenials need to know that.

EH: I read that as well when I was in elementary, it was my favorite book and still think of it now and then. Thanks for jarring my memory back to it....I'm in my 70's now. It was a great book for a youngster and your right, it had all the valuable attributes you've mentioned. Remember that he always had to shovel that last little bit in the corner by hand, that he couldn't get with the Traxcavator?

I just ordered this book from a small bookstore thanks to your comment. I know it’s an easier read, but I’m really enjoying it. I dream of owning my own dozer one day.

For anyone wonder why it uses cable instead of hydraulics well, it turns out, up to the 60s, cables was the post popular and approved method

And to think I get pissed because I can't see the forks on some of the forklifts that I drive. You would drive that mostly by memory of where the pile starts in your head. And then just keep pushing until the rpm's start to bog. That was a lot of work.

I wasn't around when these caterpillar cable loaders like this or an operation when I got older I remember seeing him sitting around and feels abandoned and stuff like that but just watching this machine run I was in a bad loan machine the only one problem it just doesn't have enough RPM and throttle

Was it doing work , or is this just a vintage equipment rodeo?

Vintage Equipment Demonstration, there's reason these were rare, awkward to use, very limited in speed and capability.

Every time i see cable drive implements on equipment loke dozers and loaders it blows my mind that they couldnt build a hydraulic system for these. Even though this is probably a 1930s or 40s machine they had the technology to make a hydraulic powered implement.

not really they did not, a sophisticated hydraulic system weren't invented for machinery until the early 60s
